Chapter 2 - The morning after

Chapter 2

Morning light slipped through the thin curtains, pale and unforgiving.

Reina opened her eyes slowly.

For a moment she didn't remember where she was.

The room was quiet, unfamiliar. The faint smell of expensive cologne still lingered in the air.

Then the memories of last night returned.

The club.

The stranger with the calm, dangerous eyes.

The way he watched her like he had known her forever.

 Yumi sat up quickly.

The bed beside her was empty.

Of course it was.

Men like him didn't stay.

She exhaled softly, brushing a hand through her hair. It had been a mistake—one reckless moment she couldn't afford again.

Her mission mattered more than anything.

Today she would finally step into the place she had spent years preparing for.

The headquarters of the most powerful Yakuza organization in Tokyo.

And the place where she would begin her revenge.

Two hours later, Yumi stood outside a towering black building in the center of the city.

The Takeda Syndicate Headquarters.

Her heart was steady.

Her face calm.

Inside her bag, hidden carefully beneath documents and a change of clothes, was a small pistol.

Insurance.

Just in case.

Two guards opened the doors after checking her identification.

Inside, the building felt colder than the streets outside.

Men in dark suits walked the halls, their eyes sharp and watchful.

Yumi followed the assistant who had been assigned to guide her.

"Boss is waiting for you," the man said.

Her pulse barely changed.

Good.

She had trained for moments like this.

They stopped in front of a tall door.

The assistant knocked once.

A voice answered from inside.

Low.

Calm.

"Come in."

The sound of it sent a strange chill down Reina's spine.

The door opened.

She stepped inside.

And froze.

The office was large, dimly lit, with red neon light from the city glowing through the tall windows behind a massive desk.

But Yumi barely noticed any of it.

Because the man sitting behind the desk…

Was him.

The stranger from last night.

The man she had spent hours talking to.

The man whose eyes had followed her every move.

Now he sat in a black chair like a king on his throne.

Black suit.

Relaxed posture.

One arm resting lazily on the armrest.

His expression was calm.

Almost amused.

Like he had been waiting for this moment.

Yumi felt the ground disappear beneath her feet.

No…

It couldn't be.

But his dark eyes locked onto hers, filled with recognition.

And then he smiled.

Slow.

Dangerous.

"Good morning, Yumi."

Her heart slammed violently against her ribs.

The man she had trusted for one reckless night…

Was Ryuji Takeda..

The most feared Yakuza boss in Japan.

And the man she had been sent to kill.

Ryuji leaned back in his chair, watching her carefully.

Like a predator who had just spotted prey walking willingly into its trap.

Then he said quietly,

"So…"

His gaze flickered over her stunned expression.

"You finally came to work for me."

The silence in the room stretched painfully.

Yumi forced her expression to remain calm, even though her mind was racing.

It can't be him.

But it was.

The same sharp jawline.

The same dark eyes that watched everything.

Except now those eyes carried something else.

Power.

The assistant beside her bowed slightly.

"Boss, this is the new recruit recommended by the Osaka branch."

Ryuji Takeda didn't look at the assistant.

His gaze never left Yumi.

"I know who she is."

His voice was smooth. Controlled.

Dangerously calm.

Reina felt heat crawl up the back of her neck.

Did he remember last night?

Of course he did.

How could he not?

Ryuji slowly stood from his chair.

He was taller than she remembered.

Broader.

More intimidating now that she knew exactly who he was.

Every instinct in her body screamed danger.

Yet he walked toward her like a man completely at ease.

Stopping only a step away.

Too close.

Yumi forced herself not to step back.

Ryuji tilted his head slightly, studying her face.

"Interesting."

His voice dropped lower.

"You look different in daylight."

Yumi swallowed.

She kept her tone steady.

"I didn't expect the boss of this organization to spend his nights in random clubs."

One of the men standing by the wall stiffened at her tone.

No one spoke to the boss like that.

But Ryuji just smiled.

A slow, amused smile.

"I didn't expect the woman I spent the night talking to… to walk into my office the next morning."

Her heart skipped.

So he remembers.

Of course he did.

Ryuji stepped even closer.

Close enough that only she could hear him when he spoke again.

"Tell me something, Yumi."

His voice brushed against her ear like a whisper.

"Did you know who I was last night?"

Her fingers tightened slightly.

Inside her bag… the gun rested where she had placed it earlier.

So close.

So easy.

She could pull it out right now.

End everything.

End him.

The man responsible for the destruction of her family.

Her revenge mission would be over.

But when she looked into his eyes…

Ryuji was already watching her.

Calm.

Unbothered.

Almost like he knew exactly what she was thinking.

Like he was waiting to see if she would do it.

A dangerous smile touched his lips.

Then he said softly,

"You look like someone who walked into the wrong place."

Yumi forced herself to breathe normally.

"I'm here to work."

Ryuji's eyes darkened slightly.

"Are you?"

His gaze slowly moved over her face.

Then he leaned closer, his voice barely above a whisper.

"Because last night… you looked like a woman trying to forget something."

Her chest tightened.

Before she could answer, he stepped back again.

The distance returned.

But the tension didn't disappear.

Ryuji turned toward the assistant.

"She'll stay."

The assistant blinked in surprise.

"Boss?"

Ryuji sat back down in his chair, resting his chin lightly against his hand.

His eyes were still locked on Yumi.

Like he had no intention of looking away.

"Assign her to my floor."

The room went quiet.

Everyone in the organization knew what that meant.

Only the most trusted people worked directly near the boss.

Yumi's heart pounded.

Why would he do that?

Ryuji's lips curved again.

Slow.

Knowing.

Then he said,

"After all…"

His gaze burned into hers.

"It would be a shame to lose someone so… interesting."

And for the first time since entering the room…

Reina realized something terrifying.

She wasn't the only one hiding a secret.

Because the way Ryuji watched her…

It almost felt like he had known exactly who she was from the very beginning.
