Chapter 5 - The Bonfire Night

Night slowly settled over Mystic Falls.

Deep in the woods outside town, music echoed through the trees.

Students from Mystic Falls High School had gathered around a large bonfire.

Laughter filled the air.

Some people were dancing.

Others sat in small groups talking and drinking.

It was the kind of small-town party that happened almost every weekend.

But tonight…

Several people were waiting for someone.

Standing near the bonfire were Elena Gilbert, Caroline Forbes, and Bonnie Bennett.

Caroline looked toward the road impatiently.

"He's late."

Elena pretended not to care.

"Maybe he decided not to come."

Caroline turned toward her immediately.

"You sound disappointed."

Elena rolled her eyes slightly.

"I do not."

Bonnie smiled softly while watching the two of them.

But inside…

She felt slightly nervous.

Ever since the morning, the strange supernatural energy she felt in the classroom had not left her mind.

And she knew exactly who it came from.

The mysterious new student.

Alexander Nightshade.

Just then…

A car slowly appeared on the dirt road leading to the clearing.

Its headlights briefly illuminated the trees before the engine stopped.

Caroline's eyes widened.

"That's him!"

The car door opened.

Alexander stepped out calmly.

The firelight reflected softly in his golden eyes.

Several girls nearby immediately noticed him.

Whispers started spreading through the crowd.

"Who is that?"

"That's the new guy from school."

"He's even hotter at night."

Alexander ignored the attention as he walked toward the bonfire.

His gaze quickly found Elena.

She was standing with Caroline and Bonnie.

For a brief moment…

Their eyes met again.

Elena felt her heartbeat quicken.

Caroline waved dramatically.

"Alexander! Over here!"

Alexander walked toward them.

He stopped a few steps away.

Elena smiled politely.

"You came."

Alexander looked at her calmly.

"I said I would."

Something about his quiet confidence made her smile slightly wider.

Caroline stepped forward.

"Okay, first question."

Alexander raised an eyebrow slightly.

"Yes?"

Caroline crossed her arms playfully.

"How are you still single?"

Elena nearly choked on her drink.

"Caroline!"

Caroline shrugged.

"What? It's a valid question."

Alexander looked at Caroline for a moment.

Then he answered calmly.

"I haven't met the right person."

Caroline smirked.

"Maybe Mystic Falls will change that."

Alexander glanced briefly at Elena again.

Elena quickly looked away, pretending to watch the bonfire.

Meanwhile…

Bonnie had been quiet the entire time.

Her eyes remained fixed on Alexander.

The supernatural energy around him was even stronger tonight.

It felt ancient.

Overwhelming.

She finally spoke softly.

"Alexander…"

He looked at her.

Their eyes met.

Bonnie hesitated slightly.

"Have we met before?"

Alexander shook his head.

"No."

Bonnie frowned slightly.

"That's strange."

Elena looked confused.

"Why?"

Bonnie hesitated again.

Then she smiled awkwardly.

"Nothing. Just a feeling."

Alexander watched her quietly.

'This witch is more sensitive than I expected.'

At that moment, loud laughter suddenly came from nearby.

Two familiar figures approached the bonfire.

One calm.

One dangerous.

The Salvatore brothers.

Stefan Salvatore and Damon Salvatore.

Damon's eyes immediately locked onto Alexander.

A slow smirk appeared on his face.

"Well well… the mysterious new student decided to join the party."

Alexander looked at him calmly.

"It seemed entertaining."

Damon chuckled softly.

"Mystic Falls parties always are."

But behind the playful tone…

His eyes were sharp.

Studying Alexander carefully.

Meanwhile, Elena suddenly felt something strange.

Standing beside Alexander…

She felt calm.

Safe.

As if nothing bad could happen while he was there.

She looked at him again.

For reasons she didn't understand…

She felt drawn to him.

And Alexander Nightshade…

Was starting to enjoy this small town more than he expected.

The night was only beginning.

And Mystic Falls had no idea…

That its story had just changed forever.
