Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: never again

He stood.

Slowly.

His fingers curled tightly into fists at his sides, knuckles tightening until they turned white beneath the dim golden lights of the hall.

He had heard her.

Every word.

Every damn word.

"I'm going to pursue you."

"I'm not leaving this time."

Gu Jinhan's jaw tightened.

Did she really think she could just leave whenever she wanted… and come back like nothing had happened?

Did she really think he was something she could pick up and discard whenever she grew tired?

His chest felt tight.

Not painful.

Not dramatic.

Just that quiet, suffocating pressure he had learned to live with over the past seven years.

He could still remember that day.

The day she left.

He remembered everything with terrifying clarity.

Her face.

Cold.

Distant.

Her voice had been calm when she spoke those words, words that had cut deeper than any physical wound ever could.

She had told him she couldn't stay.

Not because she stopped loving him.

But because she felt they were only infatuated and it wasn't real love, she actually disregarded their love after everything.

In that moment, he felt his heart die, he found it hard to breathe, his chest felt tight, she couldn't leave, no she couldn't.

With pleading eyes he knelt down.

He had begged her not to leave.

He never begged.

Gu Jinhan did not beg.

He had always been proud, stubborn, self-contained.

But that day he had grabbed her wrist and told her not to go.

He could still feel the phantom sensation of her skin slipping away from his grip.

Her eyes had been calm.

Too calm.

Like she had already made peace with hurting him.

Then she walked away.

No explanation.

No promise to return.

Just silence.

And silence was worse than rejection.

Because at least rejection meant she had cared enough to hurt him directly.

But she had chosen silence.

She had chosen to disappear from his life completely.

And he had been left behind by the one person that meant everything, the one person he let himself feel for, the one person he open up to, that he let truly see him, not the cold exterior he had crafted over the years but the real him and yet she still left.

Abandoned.

Broken.

So broken he had spent months pretending he was fine while building his empire from pure obsession and anger.

And she wasn't even there to see it.

But she knew.

Oh, he knew she knew.

She had to know how badly she had destroyed him.

So how—

How could she stand there tonight and say those words so casually?

Like she hadn't spent years tearing his heart apart?

Gu Jinhan exhaled slowly through his nose.

His heart was betraying him.

Because despite everything…

Her voice still made something inside him soften, he felt it, the shift in his chest, he couldn't let go.

And he hated that.

Hated that after everything, his body still remembered her.

His mind still reacted to her presence like she was oxygen he had been deprived of for years, like she was the peace he craved, she was the bane of his existence.

His gaze slowly turned colder.

Like ice forming over deep water.

People around him instinctively stepped back.

They always did when he got like this.

The aura around him darkened, heavier, sharper, suffocating.

Gu Jinhan stared straight ahead, but in his mind, he was already replaying that night again.

The night she left.

The empty apartment.

The silence.

The realization that she had packed her things while he watched, unable to stop her.

He remembered running after her taxi, calling out her name like a man possessed because in that moment he felt real fear .

He didn't know how he got back to their apartment, he only remembered waking up and then the previous night's events overwhelmed him and then he remembered, he looked around and he knew then that she was truly gone.

Because her scent was gone.

Because her presence was gone.

Because love had a smell.

And she had taken it with her.

His fingers tightened harder.

"I will never let you back in."

The words were silent.

But firm.

Final.

Because he had survived without her.

He had built himself into someone powerful enough to never be helpless again, never to be at the mercy of anyone else, he would never let anyone see his heart like she did.

He would not go back to being that boy who waited for someone who never came back.

With that thought firmly settled in his chest, Gu Jinhan turned and strode toward the exit.

He could feel her gaze on his back the entire time.

Heavy.

Intense.

But he refused to turn around.

Not once.

The moment he stepped outside, the cold night air hit his face like a slap.

He stopped walking for a moment.

Closed his eyes.

Exhaled slowly.

The city lights blurred slightly as he whispered under his breath,

"Never again."

Never again would he let her hurt him like that.

Never again would he give her that much of himself.

But even as he said it…

He didn't realize that the war between his heart and his pride had already begun.

And this time…

He wasn't sure who would win.
