The Chaos hunters were getting closer.
Their crimson blades glowed in the dark streets as they advanced toward Kael.
Nyra stepped in front of him.
"We can't fight them here," she said.
Kael looked down at the burning symbol on his hand.
"Then what do we do?"
Nyra pointed behind him.
"Open another gate."
Kael hesitated.
"I barely understand how this power works."
"You don't need to understand it," Nyra replied.
"You just need to trust it."
The hunters suddenly lunged forward.
Their speed was terrifying.
Kael felt his heart racing.
The symbol on his hand ignited with bright blue light.
The air in front of him twisted violently.
Energy gathered into a swirling vortex.
A portal opened.
Cold wind rushed out of it.
Beyond the gate, Kael saw a completely different world.
A dark sky filled with floating mountains.
Endless shadows stretching across strange forests.
A realm where the sun never truly rose.
Nyra's eyes softened slightly.
"The Shadow Realm."
The hunters were almost upon them.
"Now!" Nyra shouted.
Kael and Nyra jumped through the portal.
The world spun around him as they crossed the gate.
Gravity shifted.
The air turned colder.
Moments later Kael collapsed onto dark stone ground.
He slowly looked up.
The sky above him was covered in deep twilight.
Strange glowing trees moved in the distance.
He was no longer in his world.
The portal behind them snapped shut.
Nyra stood beside him and sheathed her blade.
"Welcome," she said calmly,
"to another realm."
