Chapter 5 - Chapter 5 – The Night of Social Reputation

The Grand Imperial Hotel ballroom glowed under the radiant light of golden chandeliers, each crystal droplet catching and scattering light like a thousand tiny stars. The opulence was breathtaking, designed to intimidate as much as to impress.

Classical violin music floated gently across the polished marble floor, the melancholic notes weaving through the air like an invisible thread connecting the elite guests. The scent of expensive perfume and fresh flowers filled the space, mixing with the subtle clink of crystal against crystal.

Business elites stood in small, exclusive groups, their voices lowered to conspiratorial whispers while they held crystal champagne glasses that cost more than most people's monthly salary. Their eyes darted around the room, calculating, assessing, plotting.

Tonight's charity gala was not just about donations.

It was about influence.

About power.

About who stood with whom.

And everyone present knew it.

Melissa Zhao stood beside Victor Han, her posture perfect, her smile graceful and practiced. She wore a stunning red evening dress that perfectly highlighted her figure, the fabric clinging to her curves like a second skin. The color was bold, aggressive—a stark contrast to Lina's usual soft pastels. It was a statement.

"Victor," Melissa said softly, leaning slightly closer to him, her voice carrying just enough intimacy to be noticed by those watching. Her fingers brushed lightly against his arm. "She really didn't come with you tonight."

Victor Han stood straight, his spine rigid, his black suit perfectly tailored to accentuate his broad shoulders and commanding presence. Every inch of him screamed power and control.

His expression was calm.

Unreadable.

But his eyes were cold.

Ice cold.

"No," Victor replied, his voice low and smooth, giving nothing away.

Melissa tilted her head slightly, her dark eyes gleaming with false concern. "Do you think cousin is serious about breaking the engagement?"

Victor did not answer immediately.

His gaze slowly moved toward the grand entrance of the ballroom, his jaw tightening almost imperceptibly.

Waiting.

Because he knew Lina Zhao would eventually appear.

She had to.

People who suddenly changed behavior usually wanted one of two things:

Attention.

Or revenge.

And both were dangerous games to play.

***

At exactly 8:15 PM, the main entrance doors opened slowly, the heavy wood groaning softly on its hinges.

The ballroom noise dropped slightly.

Conversations faltered.

Heads turned.

Everyone's attention shifted toward the door like flowers following the sun.

A woman stepped inside alone.

Lina Zhao.

Time seemed to slow.

She wore a simple black evening dress that hugged her body elegantly, the fabric flowing like liquid shadow around her figure. It was modest yet striking, devoid of flashy embellishments but impossible to ignore. The black was a statement—mourning, perhaps, or rebirth.

There were no expensive diamond accessories glittering at her throat or wrists.

No engagement ring sparkling on her finger.

Just her.

Her long hair was tied neatly behind her shoulders, a few loose strands framing her face softly. Her makeup was minimal, enhancing her natural beauty rather than masking it.

Cold.

Beautiful.

Different.

The Lina Zhao they knew was gone.

In her place stood someone new.

Someone dangerous.

Whispers spread quietly across the ballroom like wildfire through dry grass.

"Is that Miss Zhao?"

"She looks… completely different."

"She used to smile a lot before."

"What happened to her?"

"Is she in mourning?"

"Look—no ring. She's not wearing the engagement ring."

Melissa's smile slowly faded, her perfectly painted lips pressing into a thin line. Her fingers tightened around her champagne glass.

Victor's gaze darkened slightly, a storm brewing behind his controlled expression.

Because Lina was walking directly toward them.

Without hesitation.

Without fear.

Like someone who already knew her destination.

Like she owned every step she took.

The crowd parted for her, instinctively recognizing the shift in her presence. She moved with a confidence she had never possessed before, her chin held high, her eyes fixed on her target.

Lina stopped three steps away from Victor.

The distance was deliberate.

Respectful enough to avoid scandal.

But emotionally distant.

An uncrossable chasm.

Victor spoke first, his voice carrying just enough edge to be noticed by those listening closely.

"You came."

"Yes," Lina answered calmly, her voice steady and clear.

"You came alone?"

"Yes."

Silence followed, thick and heavy, pressing against everyone's chests.

Melissa suddenly laughed softly, the sound tinkling like broken glass. Her voice carried gentle mockery, designed to belittle.

"Cousin, you are very brave tonight."

Lina turned her gaze toward Melissa slowly, deliberately. Her expression was calm.

Cold.

Unreadable.

"I appreciate the compliment," Lina said, her voice devoid of emotion.

Melissa felt a strange discomfort crawl up her spine. This was not the Lina she knew. This was not the obedient, gentle cousin who would back down from confrontation. Something had changed. Something fundamental.

Victor spoke again, his eyes never leaving Lina's face.

"You rejected my invitation but attended this event."

"Yes," Lina replied.

"Why?"

*Why?*

Because tonight was the night she would change everything.

Because tonight was the beginning of her revenge.

Because she had died once already, and she would not make the same mistakes twice.

Lina picked up a glass of champagne from a passing waiter, her movements graceful and unhurried. She held it slowly between her fingers, the crystal cool against her skin.

Then she spoke, her voice carrying across the suddenly quiet ballroom.

"I want to make an announcement."

The ballroom became very quiet.

Deafeningly so.

Everyone was listening.

Every ear was tuned to her words.

Victor's eyes narrowed slightly, a flicker of warning in their depths.

"What announcement?"

Lina smiled faintly, but the smile did not reach her eyes. It was the smile of someone who had already won.

"Regarding my engagement."

Melissa's fingers tightened around her own champagne glass, her knuckles turning white.

Victor did not speak.

He waited.

His body went still, like a predator sensing danger.

Lina continued slowly, enunciating each word with deliberate clarity.

"Starting today…"

She paused, letting the tension build, letting everyone lean in closer.

"I am cancelling my engagement with Victor Han."

***

Gasps spread across the ballroom like shockwaves.

Several people whispered in shock, their hands flying to their mouths.

"She really said it…"

"Is she rebelling against the Han family?"

"Does she have a death wish?"

"This is suicide."

"Did she lose her mind?"

Melissa's face turned slightly pale, her carefully constructed composure cracking.

Victor's expression remained calm on the surface.

But something inside his eyes changed.

Something dark.

Dangerous.

Like a predator realizing its prey was escaping.

Like a king being challenged in his own court.

Lina spoke again, her voice unwavering.

"I will return all engagement gifts."

"I will also return any financial advantages related to the engagement agreement."

She paused slightly, her gaze sweeping across the room before returning to Victor.

Her voice became softer, but no less firm.

"But Zhao Group will remain independent."

***

Silence.

Absolute, crushing silence.

Victor suddenly laughed softly, the sound low and dangerous, sending shivers down the spines of those who heard it.

"You think independence is that simple?"

Lina met his gaze directly, unflinching.

"Yes."

Victor stepped one step closer, invading her personal space, using his height and presence to intimidate.

His voice lowered to a whisper that only she could hear, but his eyes promised violence.

"You are choosing war."

Lina nodded slowly, her expression never changing.

"I know."

The ballroom atmosphere became tense, electric, as if a storm was about to break. Everyone could feel it—the shift, the change, the beginning of something catastrophic.

Victor studied her face carefully, searching for fear, for hesitation, for weakness.

He found none.

Then he spoke one sentence, his voice carrying across the silent room.

"Very well."

His lips curved slightly, but it was not a kind smile.

"If you want to cancel the engagement…"

He let the words hang in the air.

"Prove that you deserve to stand alone."

***

At the edge of the ballroom, hidden in the shadows of a marble pillar.

Adrian Lu stood silently, holding a glass of water he had no intention of drinking. His dark suit blended with the shadows, but his presence was undeniable. His sharp eyes never left Lina's form.

His assistant spoke quietly behind him, barely audible.

"Sir, Miss Zhao has done it."

Adrian nodded once, his expression unreadable.

His gaze never left Lina. He watched the way she held herself, the way she faced Victor without fear, the way she had transformed.

After a moment, he spoke softly, his voice barely a whisper.

"Victor will move soon."

"Yes, sir."

"And when he does…"

Adrian's eyes became darker, like storm clouds gathering.

"Protect her reputation."

"Yes, sir."

***

Suddenly—

Melissa stepped forward, unable to stay silent any longer. She needed to regain control of the narrative.

"Cousin."

Her voice was sweet, dripping with false concern.

But her eyes were sharp.

Calculating.

Cruel.

"You are cancelling the engagement because of someone else, right?"

The question was clearly meant to provoke.

To scandalize.

To destroy.

People immediately became interested, their eyes gleaming with the promise of drama.

Lina looked at Melissa calmly, her expression giving nothing away.

"Yes."

Melissa's lips curved slightly, a triumphant smile forming. She had her.

"Is it Adrian Lu?"

***

The ballroom atmosphere changed instantly.

Every head turned toward the shadows where Adrian stood.

Victor's gaze became colder, murderous.

Everyone waited for Lina's answer, holding their breath.

This was it.

The moment that would define everything.

Lina did not confirm.

But she did not deny either.

Instead, she spoke one sentence, her voice clear and strong.

"I choose my future."

Not a man.

Not family pressure.

Not revenge.

Future.

***

Outside the ballroom, in the privacy of a black luxury car that had stopped quietly in the valet lane.

Inside the car, a man spoke through a communication device, his voice cold and commanding.

"Prepare market pressure strategy."

"Yes, young master."

Victor Han sat inside the car, having slipped away moments after the confrontation. He was smiling, but the smile was terrifying.

Because the real war had begun.

***

Inside the ballroom, Lina finished her champagne in one smooth motion.

She placed the empty glass on the waiter's tray with elegant precision.

Then she turned around slowly.

Her steps were elegant.

Unhurried.

Unafraid.

She walked away from Victor, from Melissa, from the life she had known.

Behind her, Victor spoke quietly, his voice carrying just enough to reach her.

"Lina."

She stopped.

"Yes?"

Victor's voice was very slow, each word deliberate.

"I hope you are prepared."

"For what?" Lina asked, not turning around.

Victor smiled, though she could not see it.

"For losing everything."

***

Lina smiled faintly, the expression sad and knowing.

"No."

Her answer was calm.

Certain.

Final.

"This time… I will not lose."

She walked away, leaving silence in her wake.

***

Far away.

Inside Lu Corporation Tower, on the top floor that overlooked the entire city.

Adrian Lu stood beside the window, his reflection ghostly against the glass. He looked at the night city, at the lights that twinkled like distant stars.

He whispered quietly, almost to himself:

"Interesting."

And for the first time in years, something like anticipation flickered in his dark eyes.

The game had begun.
