Sebastian was still fastening the final buttons on his dress shirt when I pulled open the door to find Penny and Dominic waiting in the hallway. My sister swept past me like a whirlwind, radiating excitement about whatever urgent matter had brought her here, while Dominic trailed behind wearing an expression so somber it created a jarring contrast with her enthusiasm. The tension crackling between them was impossible to miss. They maintained a careful distance from each other, nothing like the easy familiarity they used to share.
"Hey there, big sister!" Penny chirped, planting a quick kiss on my cheek before stopping dead in her tracks. Her sharp eyes flicked between Sebastian and me, eyebrows climbing toward her hairline. "Hold on, why do you both look like you just finished some kind of intense workout? And what happened to Sebastian's hair? Looks like he stuck his finger in an electrical socket."
