Chapter 3 - Chapter 2: Nightfall

Date: December 31st, year 1 Location: The First Moon.

After one year, the five gods reunite on the moon. While the four new gods rise from the planet, Nyx was already waiting for them.

- "Hey everyone! You're back already?" Nyx greets them as she sits up.

- "Were you just sitting on the moon for an entire year?..." Calypso asks.

- "Yep! I was watching what you were all doing down there."

- "Glad to see you in good spirits!" Vivianne joyfully exclaims.

- "It was a very entertaining year." Solomon comments.

- "Nice!" Nyx looks around. "Where's… that's strange. My memory never failed me before."

- "You're probably asking about Serafim." Vivianne replies, her smile slightly wavering. "You're probably not remembering because you never bothered to ask…"

Serafim, the black haired boy, comes out from behind her. He's holding the side of her dress, and slowly looking around with wide eyes like it was his first time ever stepping foot on the moon.

- "Well, everyone's here!" Nyx concludes. "So, tell me about the stories you've gathered during your time on the planet!"

- "It's called Earth." Vivianne cuts.

- "Hm?"

- "The planet. It's called Earth. You should know that much." The corners of her mouth drops, and her expression turns more neutral. "You know, love is also about caring for the details."

- "Hm?" Nyx blankly stares at her for a second. "I am caring about the details though! I know that humans need food, air and water to survive!"

- "...Nevermind. You probably can't understand!" Her smile returns.

- "Ahem." Solomon intervenes. "I believe we should begin our reports. I will start: I reconnected with my family, and…"

The gods tell tales about their experiences on Earth to Nyx until she is smiling from ear to ear, excitedly floating up and down.

- "What else? What else?" She impatiently asks.

- "That's all that happened for me." Calypso replies.

- "Oh it's already over? I really liked that part when you went to bring drinkable water to your village and all!"

- "I'm happy to hear that." Calypso answers with a warm smile.

- "However, Vivianne…" Nyx starts as she turns towards her. "I need you to stop doing that."

- "What?" Vivianne curiously asks.

- "Stopping wars, making people play nice and a bunch of the stuff you did with the power I gave you. That's no good."

- "...Excuse me? I think I misheard you Lady Nyx."

- "You didn't, I made sure all of you had perfect hearing! Well except Solomon, he made himself after all. Anyways, I don't want you to be doing that stuff anymore!"

- "Why?!"

- "Because it's no fun! If there's no conflict and everyone plays nice because a goddess used her powers on them, then humanity becomes boring to watch. Nothing happens, and at this point I might as well start a new planet and wait for a new intelligent species to rise!"

- "You…" The heart in Vivianne's left eye fully splits apart, turning into a broken heart. Her pink aura starts displaying accents of red. "There's no way you're being serious!"

- "I am!"

- "Then I won't listen to you. I'll do whatever I like, because I don't want the people I love to die! If I didn't stop the war that was raging in that town, all my friends would've been killed!"

- "Yes! And that would've made for some cool stories from the people that were close to them, like you! Imagine, they could all go through edgy revenge arcs, or prove how compassionate they can be by forgiving the killers!"

- "You expect me to just idly stand by and let people's love be trampled while I could stop it?!"

- "Yes! I don't understand what I'm saying wrong. Language is complicated sometimes… Well, you'll come around to understand eventually!"

- "I pray my point of view never aligns with yours."

- "Pray? To whom? Aren't humans the ones praying to you?"

- "..." Vivianne pauses for a few seconds. "To myself. Come on Serafim, let's go. I'm sure she'll better understand what I mean next year."

Vivianne takes off and flies towards Earth at top speed, followed by Serafim. The latter looks back as he leaves, his jet black eyes stopping to stare directly at Nyx.

- "Well, I believe I should return to Earth too." Solomon says as he looks at a clock he pulled out of his pocket. "I will be seeing you next year."

- "Bye!" Nyx waves as the three gods leave the moon.

- "Do you mind me staying a little bit to chat?" Calypso nervously asks.

- "Not at all!"

Nyx and Calypso spend about a day talking about unimportant topics, with Calypso taking this opportunity to rant about her struggles on Earth. At the end of this, she also departs for the Earth, leaving Nyx alone on the moon again.

Date: December 31st, year 2 Location: The First Moon.

The meeting, that Solomon nicknamed the Lunar Council, went about the same as the one that was held the previous year. This includes another one sided argument erupting between Nyx and Vivianne.

Date: December 31st, year 1586 Location: The First Moon.

Ah. I spaced out a bit. When did that happen? I think it was after the 357th Lunar Council. Vivianne still couldn't understand what I was telling her for some reason. Well, better focus my attention back on Earth!

Nyx manifests her humanoïd form on the surface of the moon, and is met with the four gods, sitting and seemingly enjoying a pleasant chat around a table made of moonstone. Serafim was sitting on Vivianne's lap, silently but attentively following the conversation.

- "...And this is how I popularized the use of magic items as regular household appliances." Solomon finishes, seemingly content with a story he was telling.

- "Whoa!" Vivianne enthusiastically claps. "I can't believe you did that in the entire world in less than ten years ! Teach me your ways!"

- "Haha, I believe they might be too advanced for you." He chuckles.

- "Are you suggesting I'm stupid?! I'll let you know my city is the most prosperous in the entire world, I think! There's no way a stupid person could've done that!"

- "She has a point, old man." Serafim comments. "We worked really hard on this, so don't brush aside Vivianne's efforts."

- "Oh trust me, I would never imply such a thing. All I am saying is that I could have achieved the same result, given the same resources and with half as much effort." Solomon replies with a sly grin.

- "You're so mean!" Vivianne pouts as she physically grabs one of the hearts from her aura and tosses it at Solomon. The latter waves his hand, and the heart is deflected to the side. It explodes in a pink mushroom cloud, probably with enough power to level a city.

- "Pffff." Calypso tries to contain her laugh.

- "What's funny?!" Vivianne exclaims as Serafim desperately sighs.

- "You're falling right for his bait! It's just hilarious that you haven't learned a single thing in almost two millenias. I'm imagining what your followers would think if they saw this side of you!"

- "Seconded." Solomon adds with a soft smile. "Tormenting you is an endless well of entertainment."

- "You-!" Vivianne starts.

- "Hey everyone! Any interesting stories? I really liked that one that Serafim told me last time, so I've got my hopes up!" She excitedly says as she waves her hand towards them.

They all simultaneously turn towards her, with equally incredulous expressions. Even Serafim is in shock, his mouth agape as if he had just witnessed a genuine miracle. Nyx doesn't have time to react before she is hit with a wave of water large enough to engulf the entire moon. When the water settles down and disperses into vapor, Calypso was hugging Nyx with all of her strength, tears streaming down from her cheeks. That is, until she hears a loud cracking sound from Nyx's right arm, and notices she has broken it.

- "Oh, the arm of my manifestation." Nyx calmly comments as the arm contorts back into place.

- "WHERE WERE YOU?!" Calypso yells, her tears forming into a stream of water powerful enough to force all the other gods back.

- "Hmm? I never moved! You live inside me, remember?"

- "You never talked to us again for more than a thousand years! We- I thought you were dead!"

- "I just spaced out for a bit, it happens pretty often which is why I need you all! Also come on now, if I died you would've noticed! Plus isn't that our whole thing as gods? We don't die!"

- "I… you…"

- "Welcome back, Lady Night." Solomon says with a reverence, his voice slightly trembling due to the emotion. "I am sincerely pleased to see you in good health."

- "Lady Nyx!" Vivianne exclaims, causing Serafim to flinch. "You know, even with all the disagreements we have, I'm happy to see you! How have you been?"

- "I'm always well, except when I'm bored! Anyways, about those stories!"

After managing to calm everyone down, Nyx is regaled with the tales of the world that she left behind. There was only one slight problem casting shade on her joyful day.

- "Vivianne… I know we've talked about this before, but you really need to let violence happen! Your stories are fun, but not as interesting as they could be! Where are the twists, the drama, the human suffering?" Nyx says, her brows furrowed in disappointment.

- "Still not gonna happen!" Vivianne joyfully replies. "I like things the way they are!"

- "Hmmm, I didn't want things to come to this but I'll do what the humans do in that situation. When the leader doesn't work anymore, change them!"

Nyx waves her hand towards Vivianne, and Serafim is the only one to catch on in time. He moves at a speed so extreme he disappears from everyone's line of sight, and pushes Vivianne out of the way, rolling with her over tens of meters. In the spot where Vivianne was standing a shallow crater was created. They could still see the smoke floating up from it, as everything inside that crater had been atomized.

- "Lady Nyx?!" Calypso exclaims, shocked.

- "Lady Night, we should discuss this before taking such drastic measures!" Solomon presses, his usual composed tone now being underlined by a slight panic.

- "Don't worry, I won't make you work more !" Nyx replies. "I'll just make a new goddess of Love, you won't even see the difference!"

- "...So it's come to this." Vivianne says as she slowly gets up, Serafim standing next to her and staring daggers at Nyx.

- "Serafim, stop doing this. I don't like having to think fast." Nyx says.

- "No." He replies, his eyes burning with determination.

- "I guess I'll also need a new god of war!" Nyx comments as she waves her hand again. Serafim tries to help Vivianne dodge once more, however he quickly realizes. This next attack was going to vaporize half of the moon they were standing on.

He dashes in front of Vivianne and braces to at least attempt to mitigate the effects of the attack, but it never hits. When he opens his eyes, he is surrounded by a red aura, and so is the half of the moon that was supposed to be obliterated. He turns to look at Vivianne, and sees that her traits are deformed by rage. The hearts in her eyes were both broken, and all the ones floating inside her usual aura were in the same state, having all turned red at once.

- "Hm? I just wished that you didn't exist, why are you still here?" Nyx curiously asks.

- "Because I need to protect the people I love! If I die here, my followers will be lost! All my efforts will be in vain! And SERAFIM WILL BE SAD!" Her red aura flares up, with an intensity so extreme even Nyx is forced back.

- "Lady Night, please reconsider!" Solomon pleads. "You have bestowed all of us with a fraction of your power, meaning any of us could damage you in your current state if pushed far enough! Especially Vivianne!"

- "A threat?..." Calypso repeats, overwhelmed. "No, I need to help…"

Calypso raises her hands, and a ginormous wave of water starts to form between Nyx and Vivianne in an attempt to separate them. However, she is stopped by Serafim, who moved so fast she lost track of him. He kicks her in the stomach, sending her flying straight hundreds of kilometers back, into the vast expanse of space.

- "Please don't interfere, auntie Calypso. This is just like war, and it can't end well for anyone." He says as she disappears in the distance.

Nyx sees this, before turning her attention back to Vivianne. The latter was now standing right in front of her, and she reaches forward to grab her neck. Nyx doesn't budge, due to her lack of survival instincts.

- "You will never understand humans." Vivianne says, her aura flaring up as if responding to the rage in her voice. "And we will never understand you."

- "Solomon!" They all hear Calypso plead from the direction she was projected towards. She wasn't visible anymore, but her voice was echoing around them. "Please stop Vivianne, I beg you!"

Solomon steps forward towards Vivianne, and Serafim tenses up, ready to fight him. However, the god of Magic freezes in place, his eyes darting back and forth between Nyx and Vivianne. Vivianne slowly shakes her head when their eyes lock, and he doesn't take another step. It was as if his body was frozen in ice.

- "We all need to choose our side, old man." Serafim says as he walks towards Solomon and stands next to him. "I know that if Nyx gets out of this, it will be the end of me, and of Vivianne. And I am prepared for this. But are you?"

- "I…" Solomon hesitates, incapable of choosing an answer.

- "Sometimes, one cannot help but to be a spineless coward in the face of choices such as this. Remember, you can always choose not to choose. To flee, and to never look back. But also remember, no matter what you choose, in the end you will regret it."

Solomon grits his teeth, a primal fear filling his eyes before he disappears in a flash of white light. Serafim sighs and turns back towards Vivianne.

- "He chose the coward's path after all. I can't blame him."

- "Thank you Serafim." Vivianne replies as she shifts her attention back towards Nyx, who was curiously looking at her as if trying to figure out what she was trying to do. "I might not have the most powerful Authority, since love is meant to protect people, but I can definitely do some damage if I try." She turns semi-transparent, as if her entire being was unraveling.

- "Oh, if you're going to extinguish yourself, that works too!" Nyx replies.

- "I'll regenerate. But you..." She grits her teeth. "You won't. I'm going to shatter your consciousness into so many pieces and scatter them so far in the universe that you will hopefully never be able to reform properly. And if you do, then I will do it again, and again until you leave us humans alone. You've done enough, goddess of the Night."

The latter just stares at her, waiting for something to happen. Then, she suddenly starts feeling a sensation she had never experienced before. The world starts spinning around her, and she could feel her mind unraveling at a quick rate. As her consciousness fades, the last thing she sees is Vivianne looking down at her, almost with pity. Behind her, a veil of water large enough to swallow the solar system whole was forming.

- "This is better. Better for everyone." Vivianne whispers to herself as she drops Nyx on the ground, whose manifestation starts disappearing in a cloud of shimmering stardust.

This is the final thing the creator goddess hears before she stops perceiving altogether, and before her consciousness shatters she has one final thought, as she realizes what is happening to her.

- "Did I do something wrong?..."
