The candle on Seraphine's desk had been burning for three hours.
She knew because she had watched it — not intentionally, not the way one watches something interesting, but the way the eyes drift toward light when the mind refuses to settle. The flame was steady. The room was warm. Outside her window, Aelvorn slept beneath a full moon and a sky so clear it looked polished, stars scattered from one edge of the horizon to the other like salt shaken from a careless hand.
Everything was perfectly, quietly fine.
So why couldn't she sleep?
She turned another page of her book without reading it. The words slid past her eyes and vanished, leaving nothing behind. She turned another. The candle flickered — just once, just slightly — though no draft moved through the room.
Sera looked up.
The flame had bent sideways. Not toward the window. Not toward the door. Toward the wall — the eastern wall, the one that faced the courtyard — as if something on the other side of the stone was pulling at it. She watched it straighten. Bend again. Straighten.
She set down her book.
Three seconds of silence.
Then the sky outside cracked open like a wound.
She was at the window before she understood she had moved, both hands gripping the stone sill, the cold of it biting into her palms. What she saw made every thought in her head go absolutely, perfectly still.
The sky above the courtyard was wrong.
It had been whole when she looked an hour ago. Full and dark and ordinary. Now something had cut it — a ragged tear that ran from above the eastern tower all the way to the treeline beyond the castle walls, its edges pulsing with a light that had no name in any color Sera had ever learned. Violet, but deeper. Luminous, but sick. The kind of light that lived inside things that were never meant to be opened.
The portal.
She had heard that word exactly once, three weeks ago, pressed flat against the cold corridor wall outside the throne room with her heart in her throat. Her mother's voice had been low and careful and frightened in a way Sera had never heard before — a rift, a passage, a door between what is and what lies beyond — and Sera had told herself it was nothing. Scholars and their theories. Court politics dressed in dramatic language.
She had been profoundly, catastrophically wrong.
The tear in the sky breathed.
In and out. Slowly. Rhythmically. Like the chest of something enormous tasting air for the first time after a very long sleep. Its edges peeled back further with each expansion, and the light that poured from it fell downward into the courtyard in cold, shivering sheets.
Then the shapes began to fall through.
At first she thought they were shadows — tricks of the strange light, stains on her vision from staring too long. But they landed. That was the thing. They landed, hitting the courtyard flagstones with a sound like paper tearing, and where they touched the ground the torches nearest to them simply stopped burning. Not snuffed. Not blown out. Just — stopped, as if the fire forgot what it was for.
The darkness that rushed in to fill the space where the light had been was not natural darkness. Sera had lived her whole life in a castle full of shadows and she knew what ordinary dark looked like. This was something else. This was darkness that moved with intention, that spread outward from each landed shape like ink dropped into still water, and the shapes themselves—
Almost human. That was the worst part.
Almost human, but assembled wrong — limbs fractionally too long, heads tilted at angles that made the back of her neck prickle, their edges never quite solid, shifting and drifting like smoke that hadn't decided yet what it wanted to be. They moved through the courtyard in absolute silence. The guards who ran at them lasted only moments.
Sera's hands were shaking on the windowsill. She did not look away. She was her mother's daughter and her mother had always said that a queen looks at the things that frighten her most clearly of all.
You are not queen yet, said a voice in her head that sounded uncomfortably like her own.
Look anyway, said another.
She looked.
There were dozens of them now. More falling with every pulse of the portal's terrible light. The courtyard below was thick with shifting dark shapes, and the screaming that had started somewhere to her left was spreading outward through the castle like fire through dry grass — servant to soldier to noble to child, the sound of Aelvorn discovering all at once that something had gone deeply, irreversibly wrong.
"Your Highness."
Sera spun.
Her handmaid Lotte stood in the doorway, a single candle clutched in both hands, her face the precise color of old parchment. The flame she carried shook so violently it was nearly useless, throwing jumping shadows across the walls that Sera absolutely did not need right now.
"The Queen," Lotte said. Her voice was the flat, careful voice of someone who had decided that falling apart was a luxury for later. "She's asking for you. Lower hall. We need to go now, Your Highness."
Sera was already moving.
She pulled her robe tighter with one hand and reached for the small hunting knife on her desk with the other — the one she kept for walks in the forest, slim and plain and easy to dismiss as decoration, sharp enough to be something more. She tucked it into her sleeve and crossed the room in four steps.
"How many of those things are in the courtyard?"
"We don't know."
"The knights—"
"Fighting." Lotte's jaw worked. "Some of them."
Sera understood what some meant. She did not ask about the rest.
The corridor outside her chambers was chaos made visible. Servants ran in both directions, some clutching children, some clutching nothing at all, their eyes carrying the particular blankness of people whose minds had simply declined to process what they were seeing. Somewhere below, stone crumbled. Somewhere above, a window shattered in its frame. The smell reached her before anything else — cold, mineral, like lightning had struck very close, mixed with something underneath it that had no name, something that made the back of her throat close.
Three times on the way down, she pressed herself and Lotte into doorways as shapes drifted past corridor ends. Dark. Shifting. Their hissing was barely audible — a dry, papery sound, like something rustling through dead leaves — and each time one passed, the nearest torches dimmed and stuttered.
Each time, they did not look her way.
She noticed that. Filed it away. Did not have time to examine it.
They reached the lower hall and Sera pushed through the heavy oak doors and there was her mother.
Queen Mireille of Aelvorn stood alone in the center of the hall, and she looked nothing like a queen.
She looked like a woman standing inside the wreckage of a decision she could not take back.
Her ceremonial robes were torn at one shoulder. Her silver crown sat crooked in hair half-escaped from its pins. But it was her face — her mother's perfect, composed, unreadable face, the one Sera had spent seventeen years studying and never fully deciphering — that stopped her cold. That face was undone. Every careful layer of it stripped back to something raw underneath. She looked tired. She looked old. She looked, for the first time in Sera's living memory, genuinely afraid.
"Sera." She crossed the hall quickly and took Sera by both arms, gripping with a firmness that was almost painful. Her eyes moved over Sera's face the way they did when she was memorizing something. "Listen to me. There is very little time and I need you to hear every word."
"Mother, what did you—"
"I opened it." The words fell between them like stones dropped into still water. Flat. Final. Without excuse. "I received word that there were beings on the other side who needed passage. Who needed safety. I believed the letter. I believed—" Something moved across her face, complicated and brief. "It doesn't matter what I believed. What matters is that I was wrong, and now you need to go."
"I'm not leaving you—"
"Sera." Her mother's voice did not raise. It never raised. It simply became something that could not be argued with. She reached up and unclasped something from around her own neck — a chain, silver, fine as thread, with a small pendant that caught the torchlight and held it differently than metal should, as if the light decided to linger there instead of moving on. An inscription ran around its edge in letters that were not any alphabet Sera recognized, small and precise and old. Very, very old.
Her mother pressed it into Sera's hands and closed her fingers around it.
"I know this," Sera said. Her voice came out smaller than she intended. "You never take this off. You've worn this my entire life."
"I wear it tonight a different way." Her mother cupped her face in both hands — both hands, which she almost never did, which was how Sera knew — and looked at her with an expression that had no name. "You are going to be alright. Do you understand me? Whatever happens in the next hour, whatever you see, whatever you hear — you are going to be alright. That is not hope. That is a fact. I am your mother and I am telling you."
"Mother—"
The doors at the far end of the hall dissolved.
Not broke. Not splintered. Dissolved — the wood becoming ash, becoming dust, becoming nothing, drifting apart in slow curls as if it had simply decided to stop being a door. And in the empty frame where they had been, three figures stood.
Different from the others.
Where the shadow creatures moved and shifted and hissed, these three were perfectly, absolutely still. Taller. Draped in something that did not reflect the torchlight so much as absorb it, pulling illumination toward them and returning nothing. They had faces — and that was the detail that would live in Sera's memory long after everything else blurred — almost human faces, carved from something like solidified shadow, and their eyes held no hunger, no fury, no malice.
Just absence. Pure and total and somehow worse than any of the other things.
The Triumvirate.
She didn't know the name yet. She would learn it much later. In that moment she knew only that her mother's hands had dropped from her face, and her mother had turned to put herself between Sera and those three figures, and her mother's spine was straight as a blade.
"East passage," her mother said quietly, without turning around. "Down the servants' stairs. Through the underground corridor to the river gate. Don't stop. Don't look back."
"I won't leave you—"
"Go," said her mother. And then, softer, in the voice she had used when Sera was very small and frightened of storms: "Go, my love."
Sera ran.
She heard her mother's voice rise behind her — clear and steady and utterly unafraid, filling the hall with words Sera couldn't make out over the sound of her own footsteps and her own heartbeat and the blood rushing loud in her ears. She heard the sound that came after. She did not turn around.
East passage. Servants' stairs. Underground corridor. The castle dismantling itself in layers above her as she ran — stone grinding, fire catching, screaming that peaked and then, in places, stopped. The necklace was in her closed fist, the inscription pressing its unknown letters into her palm, and she ran with her mother's last words looped in her head like a prayer she didn't know the meaning of yet.
You are going to be alright.
The river gate was open. Beyond it, darkness. The black treeline of the forest. The river catching moonlight in broken silver pieces between the roots.
She ran through.
Behind her, Aelvorn burned.
She did not see the root. She did not feel herself fall. She did not register the riverbank rushing up to meet her, or the stone that caught the side of her head, or the cold water that swallowed her from the knees down.
The last thing she was aware of — distant, fading, barely there — was a voice somewhere above her. Young. Male. Sharp with shock.
"Wait — wait, there's someone here—"
Then nothing.
Nothing at all.
