Chapter 1 - The Girl Red

It was the first fine day in May. Behind the counter where I stood, I noticed the world moving on as it did, continuing as it will. I didn't know too much of it, but there I stood. Work was work; it was an everyday thing. Nothing much mattered until it happened. It happened four times. That I, myself and far from it, showed its face in front of me, before I could even blink. It was over in an instant. This is a recounting of that tale.

I'm a simple bartender, all at work, observing things as I do. Cleaning glasses, cleaning counters, serving drinks. Could be a small cafe, could be closer to ,a bar, maybe better both. Worked as one, worked as two. All that matters is work and that was my task to do.

Today was one of those odd ones. It was like I said, a cool day in May and upon this day I myself, Denver Virgis, found myself seeing something incredible, something I wanted to know more about. Not just something but someone. Short dark hair curled inward with a wave at the sides of her face just below the chin, bright blue eyes. First time I had, looked upon her she was wearing a red long dress, red shoes. I found myself staring for a while; I had to take my eyes off. That's when it hit me. I was staring too long!

I was taking her back because I was in the clear. It did not appear that she saw I was staring. My heart was racing, and my eyes were quickly jumping around to look and not look at the same time, while I was finding myself wondering what she was going to order.

I pulled myself together, stood up straight, and greeted, "Good morning, what can I get you?" The usual spiel we use. At first, she stopped, took a look at me, took a look at the board, and said, "I wonder about that." At this point, I did not know her name, but I can imagine it was probably an Elise or maybe a Michelle. I didn't know, but at the time she obviously noticed that I was thinking something. She asked what was on my mind, and all I could reply was, "I was wondering what you were going to order?"

She ordered a flat white. The usual all business choice here. As I went off to prepare, what I could think was, "Wow, that was something! Thought I was going to die. Thought she caught me staring. I Was wondering why I did that? Was I going crazy? What is the deal?"

After making the flat white, I brought it to the counter and called out her order number. I remember, as if it was yesterday-15. I could barely sound the words out and why was my mouth so dry the moment I tried to say it, like "15"!

When she heard that, she giggled a little. She came to the counter, grabbed her coffee, smiled, and walked off.

Truth be told, I honestly can't remember if she paid enough! It was quite a while ago, but it was quite an experience. None the same.

She was truly stunning to look at and she had an amazing fragrance. It smelled sort of like roses mixed with vanilla. Quite fragrant, quite pleasing. Not sure what to make of it. Hate to have her leave but I'd love to watch her go. She stepped out the glass doors. Entered the busy world to disappear. I Wondered to myself, will I meet her again? Perhaps maybe can I say something to her?
