Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: The Merchant’s First Customer

Rain continued falling outside the shop.

Lucian stood behind the counter, staring at the glowing system screen hovering in the air like a hologram from a sci-fi movie.

He rubbed his eyes once.

The screen didn't disappear.

"Alright," he said slowly. "You're still there."

The glowing text blinked calmly.

WELCOME, LUCIAN

ROLE: Multiverse Merchant

LINEAGE: Son of Gaia

HUB STATUS: ACTIVE

Lucian leaned forward on the counter.

"You know," he muttered, "most people wake up and go to work. I show up to work and suddenly my job is running a multiverse."

The system did not respond.

Lucian crossed his arms.

"So how does this actually work?"

The screen shifted immediately.

More text appeared.

MERCHANT FUNCTIONS AVAILABLE

• Inventory Management

• Item Acquisition

• World Travel (Locked)

• Narrative Value Tracking

Lucian read the list.

"Narrative value?" he repeated.

The system answered instantly.

Narrative Value is earned by influencing events, stories, and lives within connected worlds.

Narrative Value can be exchanged for items, upgrades, and travel access.

Lucian whistled softly.

"So basically… I mess with stories and get paid for it."

A pause.

Then new text appeared.

Simplified Explanation: Yes.

Lucian grinned.

"Well, at least the system has a sense of humor."

He looked around the store again.

It looked mostly the same as before, but there were subtle differences.

The lights were warmer.

The shelves seemed taller.

The air felt… alive.

Lucian stepped out from behind the counter and walked slowly through the aisles.

Rows of snacks.

Instant noodles.

Drinks.

Nothing unusual.

Except for one thing.

At the end of the third aisle, a faint glow pulsed on one of the shelves.

Lucian stopped.

"Well that wasn't there before."

He walked closer.

A small wooden box sat between two bags of chips, glowing faintly with green light.

Lucian picked it up carefully.

The moment his fingers touched the box, a system window appeared in front of him.

ITEM DISCOVERED

Beginner Merchant Box

Description: A starter item for newly awakened Multiverse Merchants.

Contains: Random beginner rewards.

Lucian blinked.

"…A loot box."

The system remained silent.

Lucian held the box up and examined it.

"Okay," he said thoughtfully. "This might be the weirdest vending machine in existence."

He turned the box over.

No lock.

No latch.

Just glowing symbols carved into the wood.

"Well," Lucian said. "No point overthinking it."

He opened the box.

Light burst out instantly.

Lucian stumbled back slightly as glowing objects floated into the air.

The system screen updated rapidly.

REWARDS OBTAINED

• Merchant's Ledger

• Basic Translation Charm

• Traveler's Map Fragment

The floating light faded.

Three items dropped gently into Lucian's hands.

He stared at them.

"…Huh."

The first item was a small notebook bound in dark leather.

Lucian flipped it open.

The pages were blank.

A message appeared beside it.

Merchant's Ledger

Records transactions, agreements, and contracts across worlds.

Cannot be destroyed.

Lucian nodded slowly.

"Okay… useful."

The second item was a silver charm shaped like a small circle with strange symbols etched into the surface.

The system explained again.

Basic Translation Charm

Allows the user to understand spoken and written languages from connected worlds.

Passive effect.

Lucian raised his eyebrows.

"Alright, that one's actually awesome."

He picked up the final item.

A piece of old parchment.

Only half of a map was visible.

Traveler's Map Fragment

Part of the dimensional travel system.

Collect fragments to unlock new world destinations.

Lucian tilted his head.

"So I need more pieces before I can travel."

Correct.

Lucian sighed.

"Figures."

He placed the items carefully on the counter.

"Still," he said, stretching his arms, "not bad for my first magical loot box."

The system flickered again.

Narrative Value Earned: 10

Lucian blinked.

"…For opening a box?"

You accepted the role of Multiverse Merchant.

Narrative significance detected.

Lucian leaned on the counter again.

"Good to know the universe appreciates enthusiasm."

Outside, thunder rumbled faintly.

Lucian glanced toward the door.

The rain was still falling.

But something felt… different.

The air had shifted.

Like the world itself was holding its breath.

Lucian frowned slightly.

"Hey, system."

Yes.

"Are we still on Earth?"

A pause.

Then new text appeared.

Hub exists between worlds.

Location does not belong to a single reality.

Lucian stared at the screen.

"…So my workplace is now floating between dimensions."

Simplified explanation: Yes.

Lucian laughed quietly.

"Of course it is."

He walked back toward the entrance and looked outside.

The parking lot was still there.

The rain still fell.

But beyond the edge of the street…

Darkness stretched endlessly.

Lucian rubbed his chin.

"Well," he said quietly, "I guess I'm not going home tonight."

The system flickered again.

A new message appeared.

NOTICE

First Visitor Approaching.

Lucian blinked.

"…Visitor?"

He looked toward the door.

The parking lot was empty.

No cars.

No footsteps.

Nothing.

"System," Lucian said slowly, "I don't see anyone."

The automatic door slid open.

Cold air rushed inside.

Lucian stared.

Standing in the doorway was a young girl.

She looked around sixteen or seventeen.

Her clothes were slightly torn, and rain soaked her dark hair.

But what stood out most were her eyes.

They were glowing faintly red.

Lucian froze.

"…Okay."

The girl stepped inside cautiously.

Her gaze moved across the shelves, the lights, and finally stopped on Lucian.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Lucian waved awkwardly.

"Uh… welcome to the shop?"

The girl looked confused.

She glanced behind her.

Instead of a street, endless darkness stretched outside the door.

Her eyes widened.

Lucian raised both hands gently.

"Hey, it's alright," he said calmly. "You're not in danger."

The girl hesitated.

"You… aren't afraid?" she asked quietly.

Lucian tilted his head.

"Should I be?"

She stepped closer into the light.

The faint red glow in her eyes became clearer.

Lucian noticed something else.

Small fangs.

"…Oh," he said.

The girl tensed slightly.

"Yes," she said softly.

Lucian scratched his head.

"Alright," he said after a moment.

"I guess the vampire prediction came true after all."

The girl blinked.

"…What?"

Lucian smiled gently.

"Don't worry," he said. "I'm not the judging type."

He gestured toward the counter.

"Also, you're technically my first customer."

The girl stared at him like he had just spoken another language.

Lucian shrugged.

"Long story."

Outside, the rain continued falling.

But inside the shop between worlds…

Lucian's life as a Multiverse Merchant had officially begun.

And somehow, his first customer was a vampire girl.
