Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: The Serpent in the Squad

The mission brief was delivered via a cold, flickering hologram in the pre-dawn dampness of the barracks.

"Sector 7. The Obsidian Crags," Sergeant Grog grunted, his cybernetic eye whirring as he mapped out the jagged terrain. "A Tier 5 Earth-Shaker Behemoth has been sighted disrupting the mana-conduits that power the Base's perimeter shields. If those conduits go dark, the wall falls. Your squad is tasked with 'Tactical Distraction' while the heavy artillery positions itself. Translation: You're the bait."

Han Chen stood at the back of the group, his arms crossed. Beside him, Lin Xia was sharpening her wind-daggers, her expression grim. But it was the third member of their specialized "Vanguard Unit" that drew Chen's internal focus.

Yue Ying.

She was no longer in the Medical Logistics uniform. She wore a sleek, midnight-blue combat suit, a pair of curved kodachi blades strapped to her lower back. She caught Chen's gaze and offered a playful, predatory wink.

"Excited, Recruit?" she whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the transport gunship. "Tier 5 territory is where the 'trash' gets incinerated and the 'monsters' come out to play. Which one are you?"

"The one who survives," Chen replied, stepping onto the ramp of the gunship.

The Descent into the Crags

The Obsidian Crags were a graveyard of basalt pillars and razor-sharp canyons. The gravity here was twice the norm, a natural phenomenon caused by the Behemoth's presence.

As the squad hit the ground, the earth groaned. A tremor rippled through the stone, nearly knocking Lu Feng off his feet.

"Spread out! Standard diamond formation!" Lin Xia commanded, her S-Rank intuition screaming of danger.

But as they moved deeper into the canyon, the formation began to fray. Yue Ying moved with an effortless, fluid grace that didn't match the Tier 3 profile she had officially registered. She was leading them toward a narrow bottleneck—a "Death Pocket" where the high canyon walls prevented any aerial support from the Base.

She's isolating us, Chen realized. He felt his Chronos-Void talent pulse. The spatial density in the bottleneck was being subtly manipulated. She's not just an assassin; she's a Space-Time user too. A high-tier one.

"Wait," Chen called out, his voice cutting through the wind. "The mana-conduits are to the North. Why are we heading South into the gorge?"

Yue Ying stopped. She turned slowly, her amber eyes glowing with a faint, lethal light. "A shortcut, Chen. Or perhaps... I just wanted some privacy with our rising star."

Suddenly, the ground erupted.

It wasn't the Behemoth. It was a Void-Snapper—a Tier 5 subterranean beast that looked like a cross between a centipede and a drill. It had been lying in wait, perfectly camouflaged. But it hadn't attacked Yue Ying. It had been steered toward Chen.

The Ambush of Two Worlds

"Chen, look out!" Lin Xia lunged forward, throwing a massive wind-scythe at the beast, but the Void-Snapper's obsidian shell didn't even crack. It lunged at Chen, its mandibles dripping with a paralyzing neurotoxin.

Chen felt the familiar, agonizing burn as his cells compressed. His strength skyrocketed to Tier 5. He caught the beast's mandibles with his bare hands, the friction producing sparks against his skin.

"Lu Feng! Fire! Now!" Lin Xia shouted.

But Lu Feng was frozen. He wasn't looking at the beast; he was looking at Yue Ying. The "Medical Officer" had drawn her blades, but she wasn't aiming at the monster. She was standing behind Lin Xia, her blade hovering mere inches from the girl's throat.

"Don't move, Wind-Girl," Yue Ying purred. "This is a private conversation between the Ye Family and their lost property."

Chen, still holding the struggling Tier 5 beast at bay, turned his head. His eyes were bloodshot from the strain, but his gaze was like a frozen blade. "The Ye Family... so the old man sent a dog to fetch his fruit?"

Yue Ying laughed, a sharp, melodic sound. "A dog? I am the Patriarch's personal Shadow-Hand. He doesn't want you dead, Han Chen. He wants your heart. He wants the 'Divine Essence' that your mother so foolishly thought she could hide in a slum."

She looked at the Void-Snapper. "Kill the others. I only need the boy's torso intact."

The beast roared, its power surging.

"You think a Tier 5 bug and a Tier 6 assassin can take me?" Chen's voice distorted, vibrating with the power of the Void.

> [NEW SKILL AWAKENED: CHRONOS-BURST (0.05%)]

> Description: Statically 'Freeze' the kinetic energy of the Host's current output and release it in a single point.

>

Chen let go of the beast's jaws.

The Void-Snapper lunged for his throat. In that micro-second, Chen didn't punch. He tapped the creature's forehead with a single finger.

Release.

All the Tier 5 kinetic energy he had "stored" while struggling with the beast—ten seconds of maximum-output force—was released in one nanosecond into a space the size of a pinhead.

CRACK!

The Void-Snapper's head didn't just break; it detonated. Blue blood and shards of obsidian shell sprayed the canyon walls. The massive Tier 5 carcass slumped to the ground, headless.

Yue Ying froze. Her blade trembled against Lin Xia's neck. That wasn't just physical strength. That was... Space-Time Law?

"My turn," Chen said.

He vanished.

He didn't run. He used Void Step, deleting the three meters of air between him and Yue Ying. He appeared directly in front of her, his hand wrapping around her throat before she could even blink.

"The Patriarch wants my heart?" Chen whispered, lifting the Tier 6 assassin off the ground. "Tell him he can have it. But only after I use it to pump the blood out of his corpse."

The Goddess's Intervention

Suddenly, the sky above the Crags turned white.

A pillar of pure, silver mana descended from the clouds, vaporizing the mist and silencing the wind. A figure descended, standing on a platform of folded space.

General Ye Xuan.

Her face was a mask of cold fury, but her eyes were fixed on Chen's hand—the hand currently crushing the throat of her own father's assassin.

"Chen'er! Stop!" she commanded, her voice echoing like thunder.

Chen looked up at his mother, his expression one of pure, unadulterated hatred. "Why? Are you here to save your family's spy? Or are you worried I'll get blood on your precious 'East Base' uniform?"

"She is a Tier 6 expert, Chen! If she triggers her 'Soul-Combustion,' she will take you with her!" Ye Xuan landed, her presence so immense that even the Earth-Shaker Behemoth miles away went silent in fear.

"I don't need your protection," Chen spat, though his arm was shaking from the internal damage of the Equalizer.

"I know," Ye Xuan said, her voice softening into a heartbreaking whisper. She looked at the dead Tier 5 beast, then at her son. "But you need the truth. If you kill her here, the Patriarch will know you've awakened the Divine Essence. He will come himself. And not even I can stop him then."

She stepped forward, her hand glowing with a soft, healing light. "Let me help you. Just this once. Not as a General... but as a mother who has already lost too much."

Chen looked at the beautiful fairy-like woman, then at the assassin in his grip. He felt the coldness of the world pressing in on him from all sides. He threw Yue Ying into the dirt like trash.

"Fix her," Chen said, walking past his mother without looking back. "Then tell her to tell the Patriarch: I'm coming for the Ye Family. And I'm not coming as a grandson. I'm coming as their Calamity."
