Chapter 12: The Janitor of Scrolls and the 500-Year Mistake
The Grand Alliance Academy was not merely a school; it was a vertical city. Its spires pierced the clouds, and its libraries were said to contain the collective breath of ten thousand scholars. But for all its majesty, the Academy had a rigid, suffocating hierarchy. At the top were the 4-Star Elders; at the bottom were the students; and beneath them, in the dark, damp belly of the mountain, were the Manual Library Organizers.
Tian Mo stood at the service entrance, dressed in the drab, grey hemp robes of a low-level worker. Behind him, his nine students were similarly dressed, though their eyes burned with a fire that no hemp robe could hide.
"You want to be cleaners?" The head overseer, a man named Gao, barked with laughter. He was a 1nd-tier Foundation cultivator who had failed his teacher exams three times. "You have 2-Star Regional badges, yet you're applying for manual labor? Did you offend a Prince, or are you just idiots?"
"We seek the proximity of knowledge, not the prestige of the position," Tian Mo replied, his voice a calm river in a storm of insults.
"Fine. Since you're so 'scholarly,' you can handle the Sector 9 Archive," Gao sneered, tossing a rusted key at Tian Mo's feet. "It hasn't been organized in fifty years. The dust alone kills most people. If you survive a week, I might give you a copper coin."
The Rot in the Foundation
Sector 9 was a graveyard of scrolls. It was located directly beneath the Great Hall, where the prestigious lectures were held. As Tian Mo stepped into the dark chamber, the air was thick with the smell of decaying parchment and stagnant Qi.
[Divine Library Notification: Scanning Sector 9...]
[Detection: 450,000 damaged scrolls.]
[Detection: 12,000 logical errors in the 'Alliance Standard' curriculum.]
[Warning: The structural pillars of this sector are 12% decayed. If the students above use high-level techniques, the floor will collapse.]
"Teacher," Lu Feng whispered, coughing into his sleeve. "Why are we here? We could be earning stones in the Ghost Market."
"Look at the ceiling, Lu Feng," Tian Mo said, pointing upward. "Above us is the Emerald Hall. Right now, Master Chen, a 3-Star Senior Teacher, is delivering a lecture on the 'Seven-Step Flow'. Listen to his vibration."
Through the thick stone ceiling, a rhythmic thrumming vibrated. To a normal ear, it sounded like powerful Qi. To Tian Mo, it sounded like a dying engine.
"The logic he is teaching is flawed," Tian Mo said, picking up a tattered scroll from the floor. "He is teaching the students to force their Qi through the Jueyin meridian to achieve speed. But he doesn't realize that the Jueyin meridian in this geographic region is affected by the mountain's magnetic pull."
"In three minutes," Tian Mo predicted, "his 'Seven-Step Flow' will hit a resonance frequency that the mountain cannot handle."
The Interrupted Lecture
Upstairs in the Emerald Hall, the atmosphere was electric. Master Chen, a man in flowing purple robes, was demonstrating a high-level movement technique.
"The Seven-Step Flow is the pinnacle of agility!" Chen announced to three hundred elite students. "By compressing your Qi at the base of the spine, you bypass the friction of the air!"
He took a step. The air whistled. He took a second step. The floor began to hum.
In the basement, Tian Mo sat on a pile of scrolls. "Lu Feng, take this charcoal. Write 'Correction #402: Magnetic Compensation' on that pillar."
"Now?" Lu Feng asked.
"Now."
As Master Chen took his fifth step, the mountain groaned. A massive crack spider-webbed across the Emerald Hall's floor. The students screamed as the ground tilted.
Master Chen froze, his Qi backfiring into his own chest. "What? The formation... the mountain's stabilization array should have held!"
Suddenly, a voice boomed from the cracks in the floor—not a loud voice, but one so perfectly resonant that it cut through the chaos.
"The array is fine, Master Chen. Your logic is the problem."
The Hall went silent. Master Chen looked down into the dark gap in the floor. There, standing amidst dust and ancient scrolls, was a man in janitor's robes.
"Who are you?" Chen roared, clutching his chest to hide his Qi-recoil. "A servant dares to speak during a 3-Star lecture?"
Tian Mo stepped onto a pile of crates, his head visible through the breach in the floor. "I am the man who just saved your life. If you had taken the sixth step, the resonance would have shattered your spine. Look at the pillar directly beneath your left foot."
Chen looked down. There, written in fresh charcoal on the basement pillar, was a complex diagram and the words: Magnetic Compensation.
"You've been following the 'Standard Imperial Script' for 500 years," Tian Mo said, his eyes glowing with gold. "But 500 years ago, this mountain was ten meters shorter. The magnetic core has shifted. Your 'Seven-Step Flow' is now out of phase by 0.04 degrees. To a master, that's a technique. To a teacher, that's a death sentence."
The Public Humiliation
The students began to whisper. Master Chen's face turned from purple to white. "Nonsense! The Imperial Script is flawless! Guards! Remove this lunatic!"
"Wait!" A girl in white robes stood up. She was the Academy's top genius, Lin Xia. She looked at the charcoal diagram on the pillar below. "Master Chen... he's right. Look at the way the Qi-leak is pooling around the fracture. It follows a magnetic spiral, not a linear path."
Chen's hands shook. He looked at the janitor. "You... how can a manual worker see the magnetic phase of a 3-Star technique?"
"I don't see the technique," Tian Mo said, stepping out of the basement and onto the main floor of the Emerald Hall, dust falling from his hemp robes like stars. "I see the mistake. And your mistake, Master Chen, is that you stopped being a student of the world and became a slave to a book."
Tian Mo walked to the center of the hall. He picked up a piece of chalk. On the grand blackboard, he drew a single line.
"The 500-Year Mistake isn't just in the Seven-Step Flow. It's in your primary cultivation method—the Alliance Heart Mantra. Every student in this room is currently accumulating a 'Static Blockage' in their lower Dantian because of a mistranslation of the word 'Void' in the third chapter."
Master Chen laughed hysterically. "Mistranslation? The Mantra was written by the Great Sage! You are claiming to be wiser than the Sage?"
"The Sage wrote in Ancient High-Script," Tian Mo said. "He used the word 'Kōng' (Emptiness). Your translators turned it into 'Wú' (Nothingness). Nothingness is a wall. Emptiness is a vessel. By treating your Dantian as 'Nothingness,' you are trying to fill a hole that doesn't exist, causing your Qi to stagnate and rot."
He turned to the students. "How many of you feel a sharp pain in your left kidney every midnight?"
Nearly half the students raised their hands, their eyes wide with terror.
"That's not 'hard work' or 'growing pains,'" Tian Mo said. "That is the rot. And if Master Chen continues this lecture, three of you will be crippled by next month."
The Shadow Guard's Warning
Master Chen lunged at Tian Mo, his Golden Core power erupting. "Slander! I will execute you for heresy!"
But before his hand could reach Tian Mo's throat, the shadows in the room elongated.
Shadow Guard #1 (The Librarian) manifested as a blur of darkness, catching Master Chen's wrist in mid-air. The force of the impact sent a shockwave that shattered every window in the Emerald Hall.
Tian Mo didn't even flinch. He leaned in, whispering to the paralyzed Master Chen. "A teacher who uses his fists because he lost the argument is no longer a teacher. He is just a thug in a purple robe."
Tian Mo signaled the Shadow to release him. Chen collapsed, gasping, his pride and his Qi-core equally battered.
"I'll be in the basement," Tian Mo said to the stunned audience. "I have a lot of scrolls to organize. But if any of you want to learn the difference between 'Nothingness' and 'Emptiness'... bring your own scrolls. My sector is a bit dusty."
The Aftermath and the Hunger
By the time Tian Mo returned to the Sector 9 Archive, the Library system was pulsing.
[Ding! Reputation Gained: 5,000 points.]
[Ding! 300 students have realized the 'Emptiness' flaw. Reward: Soul Strength +0.2.]
[Warning: 10x Energy Consumption has spiked due to Shadow Guard manifestation. Energy Level: 15%.]
Tian Mo sat in the dark. He had humiliated a 3-Star Teacher, but he had also painted a target on his back.
"Teacher," Su Qingyuan said, entering the basement with a tray of simple food. "Master Chen has gone to the Disciplinary Committee. They are calling for an 'Academic Trial' by tomorrow morning."
"Good," Tian Mo said, taking a piece of dry bread. "An Academic Trial means they have to open the High-Level Archives to use as evidence. That's exactly where the 3-Star Spirit Stones are kept."
He looked at his nine students, who were already picking up scrolls and beginning to categorize them using the logic he had just demonstrated.
"Lu Feng, Qin Yue... don't just clean the dust," Tian Mo commanded. "Read. Every scroll in this room is a mistake. And once you learn why they are wrong, you will finally understand what it means to be right."
