Chapter 1 - The Beginning:

The corridor of the government medical college hostel smelled faintly of disinfectant and new beginnings. Trunks scraped against the tiled floor, parents gave last-minute advice, and nervous laughter floated through the air like scattered petals.

Room 217 stood half-open.

Inside, Ami sat quietly on the lower bunk near the window. The late afternoon sunlight fell gently across her face, but it did nothing to soften her expression. She was already there before anyone else — suitcase neatly placed, books stacked with careful precision, her world arranged in silence.

She did not fidget. She did not glance at the door. She simply observed.

Then the door burst open.

"Hi! Is this Room 217?" a bright voice asked, even before stepping inside.

A girl entered, dragging a large suitcase behind her. Her eyes sparkled with excitement, her ponytail swaying as if it shared her enthusiasm.

"I'm Bella!" she announced cheerfully. "I think we're roommates?"

Ami looked up slowly.

"Yes," she replied.

Just one word.

Bella blinked once, then smiled even wider. "Oh good! I was scared I'd walk into the wrong room on the first day."

Ami gave a faint nod and looked back toward the window.

Bella hesitated for a moment but refused to surrender to awkwardness.

"So… first year MBBS," Bella continued, dropping her bag beside the other bed. "Can you believe it? We made it!"

"Yes."

"Are you excited?"

Ami paused. "It's fine."

Bella tilted her head slightly. "Just fine?"

Ami did not answer. Her eyes remained fixed outside, where a few students were laughing in the courtyard.

Silence settled between them — not uncomfortable for Ami, but heavy for Bella.

Bella tried again.

Nothing came.

She cleared her throat. "You're very calm."

Ami looked at her briefly. "I prefer quiet."

Bella laughed lightly. "Oh. I talk too much sometimes."

Ami did not respond.

A group of students passed by the hallway, their laughter echoing faintly. Bella glanced toward the sound.

"We should probably go meet everyone later," she suggested. "Make friends, you know?"

Ami's fingers traced the edge of a book absentmindedly. "You can go."

Bella's smile faltered just a little. "You won't come?"

"No."

Bella tried one last time.

"So… what made you choose medicine?"

A long pause.

Ami's expression shifted slightly — something deeper flickered behind her eyes — but it vanished just as quickly.

"It was necessary," she said.

Necessary.

Bella exhaled slowly.

"Okay," she said gently. "I'll stop bothering you."

Ami didn't respond.

Bella stood still for a moment, as if deciding whether to make one more attempt. But she didn't.

One spoke. One observed.

And neither yet knew that silence can be louder than words.
