Chapter 18 - Chapter 17: Spell Storage: Firefly Magic

Chapter 17: Spell Storage: Firefly Magic

The evening of Bulleh's first unassisted steps carried a soft, celebratory hush through the hut.

Mira had insisted on no grand announcement to the village—not yet. "Let him grow a little more before everyone starts treating him like a walking shrine," she said, half-serious, half-laughing. Torr agreed. They celebrated quietly instead: extra honey drizzled over the flatbread, a second helping of goat cheese curds from the neighbor, and Mira singing the lullaby twice through while rocking Bulleh in her arms.

But inside Bulleh's mind, the day refused to end.

The physical milestone had unlocked something deeper.

As Mira finally settled him on the blanket for the night—now padded with an extra folded shawl because he no longer needed the cradle rails—the System chimed once more.

[Hidden Trigger: First Independent Locomotion + Mana Core Saturation]

New Passive Skill Evolution Path Unlocked: Spell Storage Prototype

Current capability: Store simple ambient magical phenomena for later replication or combination.

Mana cost to store: 5–15 depending on complexity

Retrieval: Instantaneous mental command

Storage limit: 3 slots (increases with Intelligence & Library upgrades)

First candidate phenomenon detected nearby: Ambient Firefly Mana Spark (Low-tier natural luminescence)

Bulleh's eyes flicked toward the open doorway.

Outside, the summer night had fully arrived. Crickets sang again, and—beyond the palisade fence—tiny golden lights drifted above the wheat fields and along the river path. Fireflies. Hundreds of them. Their slow, pulsing glow carried trace mana: not enough for combat spells, but perfect for a first experiment.

He focused.

The nearest firefly hovered just outside the threshold, its abdomen flashing in lazy rhythm—on, off, on, off—like a heartbeat made of light.

Bulleh extended his will.

Not to catch it. Not to harm it.

Simply to understand it.

The Eternal Library responded before the System even finished logging the intent.

[Scan Initiated – Ambient Phenomenon]

Object: Firefly (Luciola mingrelica variant – Aetherian subspecies)

Mana signature: Bioluminescent enzyme reaction + trace ambient mana excitation

Output: Periodic photon emission (wavelength 550–570 nm) with 0.3–0.8 second intervals

Magical potential: Low – can be replicated as Glow variant or used as component in illusion / light-based spells

Storage feasibility: High

He mentally selected: Store.

A thin silver thread reached from his small chest, through the doorway, and brushed the firefly's glow.

The insect paused mid-flight—unharmed, merely curious—then continued its dance.

Inside Bulleh, the sensation registered.

Cool. Flickering. Alive in a gentle way.

[Spell Storage Slot 1 Occupied]

Stored Phenomenon: Firefly Spark

Properties preserved:

→ Color: Soft golden-green

→ Pulse frequency: Variable (0.3–0.8 s)

→ Intensity: Low (suitable for night illumination, mood enhancement)

→ Mana cost to replicate: 2 per activation

→ Duration per cast: 15 seconds (extendable with practice)

Name assigned: Firefly Magic (Prototype Lv.1)

Bulleh tested it immediately.

He lay on his back, staring at the thatch ceiling.

Activate.

A tiny orb of light appeared above his chest—no larger than the firefly itself—hovering an inch above his swaddling cloth. It pulsed gently: on, off, on, off. The glow was warm, not blinding, and carried the faintest scent-memory of summer grass and river mist.

Mira, returning from rinsing the supper bowls outside, stopped in the doorway.

She saw the light.

Her breath caught.

"Bulleh… is that you?"

He looked at her.

The orb pulsed brighter once—affirmative—then dimmed to its gentle rhythm.

Mira crossed the room in three quick steps and knelt beside him.

She reached out, hesitant, as though afraid the light would vanish at her touch.

Her fingertip brushed the orb.

It did not disappear.

Instead it pulsed in time with her heartbeat for a single cycle.

Mira's eyes filled again—this time with quiet wonder rather than tears.

"You made a star," she whispered. "My baby made a star."

Torr appeared behind her, drawn by her soft gasp.

He stared at the hovering light.

Then at Bulleh.

Then back at the light.

"Elements preserve us," he breathed. "He's… glowing."

Bulleh let the orb drift upward until it floated near the ceiling beams, casting faint golden-green shadows across the hut. It moved in slow, lazy circles—mimicking the firefly's natural dance—before slowly fading after the full fifteen seconds.

Darkness returned, softer now.

Mira lifted Bulleh against her chest.

"You're full of magic, aren't you?"

He answered with a short, melodic hum—Infant Bard's gentle affirmation.

Yeeesss… ma… ma…

She kissed his forehead.

Torr sat beside them, one arm around Mira's shoulders, the other resting on Bulleh's small back.

For a long while no one spoke.

The fireflies outside continued their silent dance.

Inside the Library, the new spell received its own crystal orb in the Spell & Skill wing.

Title: Firefly Magic – First Stored Spell

Properties:

• Visual & mana waveform preserved

• Emotional imprint: Wonder / familial love (peak 94%)

• Upgrade path: Combine with Glow → Sustained Firefly Lantern
Combine with lullaby melody → Soothing Nightlight (sleep aid)
Note: The smallest light can guide the longest night.

Bulleh nestled deeper into Mira's embrace.

He felt the warmth of her heartbeat, the steady strength of Torr's hand, the quiet pulse of the village beyond the walls.

And above them all—faint but real—the memory of a single firefly's glow, now his to call whenever darkness felt too heavy.

He closed his eyes.

Not to sleep—not yet—but to dream of what else the night might teach him.

Another firefly drifted past the doorway.

Bulleh watched it go.

Then—silently—he whispered to the Library:

Store another.

A second slot filled.

The night was young.

And so was the magic.
