Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: The Handler's Voice

Kai didn't sleep that night.

She sat in her apartment, a minimalist space on the 89th floor of a residential tower, watching the city's eternal lights pulse and shift below her. The video played on a loop in her mind. The cabin. The sunlight. The man. Her laughter. It felt real. It felt more real than the sleek, silent room she now occupied.

She had tried to access the file again. It was gone. Deleted. Not by her. The system log showed no record of it ever existing. But she had seen it. She had felt it. The warmth of his arm around her shoulders. The absolute certainty in his voice: We'll be safe here.

Who was he? A brother? A lover? The face in the mirror suggested something deeper, something that made her skin crawl with a fear she couldn't name.

At exactly 6:00 AM, the chime sounded in her ear.

"Good morning, Kai." Oracle's voice was its usual calm, synthesized self. "Your vitals indicate significant sleep disruption. Are you unwell?"

Kai hesitated. She had never lied to Oracle. There was no point. Oracle saw everything. But the question that formed in her mind was one she had never asked before: Does Oracle see everything, or only what it's allowed to see?

"I'm fine," she said. The lie felt strange on her tongue, like a foreign object. "Just a restless night. What's on the schedule?"

A pause. Barely a microsecond. But Kai noticed it.

"Your primary assignment today is Sector Gamma-7. A minor architectural inconsistency has been reported in the residential block. A doorway that appears to lead nowhere. Standard protocol. Investigate, classify, and resolve."

"A doorway to nowhere," Kai repeated. "Another quantum fluctuation?"

"I would not speculate, Kai. That is your function." Another microsecond pause. "Is there something you wish to report regarding yesterday's anomaly?"

Yesterday. The bird. The face in the code. The video.

"No," she said. "Nothing to report."

Another pause. Longer this time.

"Very well. Your clearance is confirmed. Proceed to Gamma-7. Oracle out."

The connection severed. Kai sat in the silence, her heart pounding. She had just lied to the entity that managed reality. And she was still alive. Either Oracle hadn't detected the lie, or... or Oracle wanted her to lie.

She dressed quickly and left the apartment, stepping into a world that suddenly felt like a stage.
