Chapter 1 - A heartbeat away

Sometimes love isn't far away — it's just a heartbeat closer than you realize.

used to think love was something dramatic. Fireworks. Grand confessions. A perfect movie-like moment. But that day, standing in the quiet school corridor while the rain tapped softly against the windows, I realized love could be much simpler than that.

It could be the way he stood beside me.

Arjun had always been my best friend. We shared notes, secrets, late-night study calls, and silly arguments over nothing. He knew how I liked my coffee, how I pretended to be brave during presentations, and how I always got nervous before exams. He knew everything.

But that afternoon felt different.

The corridor was almost empty. Our friends had already left, and the rain had trapped us inside. I was staring outside when he suddenly stepped closer to look at the rain too. So close that our shoulders brushed.

My heart skipped.

I told myself it was nothing. Just a moment. Just the rain. Just my imagination.

"Cold?" he asked softly.

Before I could answer, he took off his jacket and placed it around my shoulders. His fingers lightly touched my hand for a second — just a second — but it felt like time had stopped.

And that's when I heard it.

Not the rain. Not the distant laughter from another classroom.

My heartbeat.

Loud. Fast. Uncontrollable.

I turned slightly, and for the first time, I noticed the way he was looking at me. Not like a friend. Not like someone who had known me forever.

But like someone who was afraid to lose something precious.

"Why are you looking at me like that?" I whispered, trying to sound normal.

He smiled nervously. "Like what?"

"Like… I'm different."

He looked down for a moment, then back at me. His voice was softer than I had ever heard it before.

"Maybe you are."

The world felt smaller. Quieter. Like it was just the two of us standing there, a heartbeat apart.

"I've been trying to ignore it," he continued. "Because I didn't want to ruin what we have. But every time you smile, every time you call me first when something happens… it doesn't feel like just friendship anymore."

My breath caught.

All this time, I thought I was the only one fighting these feelings. The only one pretending not to notice how my world seemed brighter when he was around.

"I was scared too," I admitted. "Scared that if I said something, I'd lose you."

"You won't," he said immediately. "You'll never lose me."

The rain grew heavier outside, but inside, everything felt calm.

He stepped a little closer — not touching, just close enough that I could feel the warmth between us.

Only a heartbeat away.

"I don't know what will happen next," he said honestly. "But I know I don't want to stand this close to you and pretend I don't feel anything."

I smiled, my nervousness slowly turning into something warm and steady.

"Then don't pretend."

For a second, we just stood there, smiling like two people who had finally found the courage to say what had been hidden in their hearts.

No dramatic confession.

No fireworks.

Just two best friends realizing that love had been quietly growing between them all along.

Sometimes love doesn't arrive loudly.

Sometimes it waits patiently…

Just a heartbeat away. 💕
