Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary of Echoes

Dawn had not yet touched the sky when they reached the sanctuary.

Lyra's lungs burned from running, but Cael never slowed. His hand remained wrapped around hers, warm and steady, guiding her through twisting paths hidden beneath ancient trees.

The forest suddenly opened.

Stone towers rose from the earth like sleeping giants, wrapped in ivy that shimmered faintly with magic. Crystal lanterns floated in the air, glowing softly against the darkness. Waterfalls poured from carved cliffs into silver pools below, their mist catching stray starlight.

It was beautiful.

Peaceful.

Safe.

Lyra stopped walking.

"This place…" she breathed. "It feels familiar."

Cael noticed immediately.

He watched her carefully.

"You've been here before."

Her gaze snapped to him.

"So I do have a past."

His expression softened slightly.

"You always did."

Before she could ask more, voices echoed from the courtyard ahead.

Figures emerged from the sanctuary gates—mages dressed in pale robes, warriors carrying glowing spears, and healers cloaked in silver silk.

They froze when they saw her.

One woman dropped the basket she carried.

A young guard stepped backward in shock.

Whispers spread quickly.

She's alive.

It can't be.

The Starbearer—

Lyra's stomach tightened.

"Why are they staring at me?"

Cael moved subtly closer to her side.

Protective.

"Because they thought you were dead."

The crowd parted as an older woman approached.

Her hair shone white as moonlight, her presence calm yet powerful. Magic hummed around her like quiet thunder.

Her eyes fell on Lyra.

Tears filled them instantly.

"…Child," the woman whispered.

Lyra felt an inexplicable ache in her chest.

"Do I know you?"

The woman hesitated, grief flickering across her face.

"You once called me Mentor."

Lyra's breath caught.

The woman reached out slowly, stopping just before touching her.

"I am Elowen."

The name stirred nothing—and yet everything.

Fragments brushed the edges of Lyra's mind like distant music.

"I'm sorry," Lyra said softly. "I don't remember."

Pain passed through Elowen's expression, but she nodded gently.

"Then we will begin again."

Her gaze shifted toward Cael.

Something sharper entered her eyes.

"You brought her back."

Cael inclined his head slightly.

"I found her before the Seekers did."

Elowen studied him carefully.

"You never stopped searching."

Lyra noticed the tension immediately.

Something unspoken hung between them.

"Wait," Lyra interrupted. "Searching? For me?"

Neither answered right away.

Cael looked away first.

Elowen sighed.

"You disappeared six months ago, Lyra."

Six months.

The number echoed hollowly.

"Disappeared how?"

Elowen hesitated again.

"You erased yourself."

Lyra blinked.

"…I what?"

"You performed forbidden star magic," Elowen explained gently. "You wiped your memories and vanished before anyone could stop you."

Lyra staggered slightly.

"Why would I do that?"

Silence spread through the courtyard.

Every eye turned toward Cael.

He remained still.

Unreadable.

Elowen followed their gaze.

Understanding dawned across her face.

"…You truly haven't told her."

Lyra turned sharply to him.

"Told me what?"

Cael's voice lowered.

Careful.

"Not here."

Frustration sparked.

"You keep doing that!" she snapped. "Everyone knows something about me except me."

The air pulsed faintly.

Her sigil glowed brighter.

Magic responded to her emotions.

The surrounding mages shifted nervously.

Elowen raised a calming hand.

"Lyra, your power is awakening. Strong emotions may trigger it."

Lyra forced herself to breathe.

The light faded slowly.

She looked back at Cael.

"…Were we close?"

The question slipped out quietly.

His composure cracked—just slightly.

Enough for her to notice.

"…Yes," he said.

Her heart beat faster.

"Friends?"

He swallowed.

A long pause followed.

"…More than that."

The world seemed to tilt.

Heat rose to Lyra's cheeks for reasons she didn't understand.

She searched his face, hoping for memories to appear.

Nothing came.

Only a strange warmth.

And sadness she couldn't explain.

Elowen stepped forward gently.

"She needs rest. Her mind and magic are fragile."

Cael nodded immediately.

Relief—or escape—flashed across his features.

A young healer approached Lyra with a kind smile.

"Come. We prepared a chamber when hope returned."

Lyra allowed herself to be guided toward the sanctuary halls, but she glanced back over her shoulder.

Cael remained in the courtyard, watching her go.

He didn't follow.

Didn't move.

Just watched.

Their eyes met one last time before she disappeared inside.

Outside the Sanctuary

Elowen turned to Cael once Lyra was gone.

Her voice hardened.

"You cannot hide the truth forever."

Cael's shoulders tensed.

"I know."

"She deserves to understand why she erased herself."

His gaze darkened.

"And relive the choice that nearly killed her?"

Elowen studied him carefully.

"Or relive the love that made her strong."

Pain flickered openly across his face now.

Raw.

Unprotected.

He looked toward the sanctuary doors.

"…If she remembers," he said quietly, "she may choose destiny again."

Elowen's voice softened.

"And if she does?"

Cael closed his eyes briefly.

A man already mourning a future loss.

"…Then I lose her a second time."

Inside her chamber, Lyra stood near a window overlooking the glowing sanctuary.

Her fingers brushed the sigil on her arm.

More than friends.

The words echoed endlessly.

Outside, she saw Cael turn away into the shadows.

A sudden, unexplainable ache filled her chest.

"Why does it feel like I miss him…" she whispered, "…when I've only just met him?"

The stars above shimmered faintly.

As if they already knew the answer.
