Chapter 10 - Chapter 9: Hunt

The path toward the Ironspine Mountains unfolded under a heavy, gray sky.Rough stones dug into the soles of Karen's boots, and the wind grew colder as the team climbed higher, leaving the green forests of the lowlands behind. The air smelled of dry earth and pine, and every rustle in the grass felt like a potential threat.

Ella's quiet breathing came through the small speaker beside Karen's neural bracelet. She was still watching, her eyes fixed on the screen, never looking away. For the first time in years, Karen felt a steady, warm weight in his chest—not fear, not anger, but purpose.

"Stay sharp," he reminded the team. "The monsters here are higher level, and they fight in packs. No one wanders off alone."

Tank grunted in acknowledgment, his massive shield held steady in front of him. Hawk moved ahead slightly, his bow ready, scanning the ridges for movement. Blaze and Frost stayed in the center, their hands glowing faintly with stored magic. Jason and Sophia guarded the rear, their steps silent and alert.

They had been traveling for nearly an hour when the first attack came.

A high, piercing shriek cut through the wind.

Karen looked up instantly. From the rocky cliffs above, shadows descended—large, vulture-like creatures with blood-red eyes, jagged talons, and feathers as black as ash. Their wings blotted out the weak sunlight, and their cries echoed through the canyon.

Blood Vulture, Level 14

Dozens of them.

"Defensive formation!" Karen shouted.

Tank planted his feet and slammed his shield forward, creating a solid barrier. Blaze immediately unleashed a sweeping wave of fire, burning two vultures out of the sky before they could strike. Frost summoned a storm of ice shards, piercing the wings of those that tried to circle around.

Hawk loosed arrow after arrow, each shot finding a critical point.Jason and Sophia slashed at any creature that broke through the line, their blades moving fast and precise.

But the vultures did not stop coming. They did not attack wildly. They herded.

They swooped low, forcing the team deeper into the narrow canyon, cutting off all paths of retreat. Karen's instincts screamed danger—this was not natural monster behavior. This was a trap.

"They're pushing us toward the dead end!" Sophia yelled, parrying a talon strike.

Karen's eyes narrowed. He could see it now—the canyon ended in a sheer stone wall, hundreds of feet high. No exit. No cover. No way to escape.

"Forward!" he roared. "Break through their front line! Don't let them corner us!"

He activated Rage Fire, his sword blazing with crimson light. He charged forward, cutting through three vultures in a single Arc Slash. The creatures shrieked and fell, their bodies dissolving into smoke. The team followed closely, moving as one unified force, cutting a path through the circling horde.

Within moments, they burst free of the encirclement and rushed into a small, dark cave hidden between two boulders.

Karen quickly rolled a large stone in front of the entrance, blocking the mouth.

For a long moment, there was only silence and heavy breathing.

Ella's voice came softly, filled with worry. "Karen… are you hurt?"

"I'm fine," he said, his voice gentler. "Everyone's safe. Just a short rest."

Frost immediately began casting healing spells, her blue light softening the shadows inside the cave. Tank's armor was deeply dented, and his arm had a long gash from a vulture's talon. Blaze's robes were singed, and Hawk's quiver was nearly empty. Everyone was injured, but no one had fallen.

Jason stared at the stone barrier, his expression dark. "That wasn't a random attack. Those vultures were controlled."

Sophia's jaw tightened. "The Rossettis. They must have hired a Beast Tamer player. They knew we were coming, and they set a trap before we even reached the mountains."

Karen nodded. He had suspected it from the beginning. The Rossettis would not let Wings of Liberty claim the clue, the research notes, or the truth hidden inside the mountains. They would hunt them until they were eliminated.

And they were not far away.

"They're not just chasing us," Karen said quietly. "They're hunting us. And they won't stop until we stop them."

He pulled up the quest map.The hidden research facility was still miles ahead, deep within the Ironspine Mountains. Turning back meant abandoning the only real clue to a permanent cure for GCV. Moving forward meant walking directly into greater danger.

He looked at his team—tired, wounded, but unbroken. He looked at the small screen, where Ella's face glowed with trust.

"We keep going," Karen said, his voice firm and unshakable. "We don't run. We don't hide. We hunt them first."

Hawk's face broke into a fierce grin. "That's the order I've been waiting for."

Tank cracked his knuckles, gripping his axe tightly. "Let them come. I'm ready to break something."

After ten minutes of rest, potion refills, and quick equipment checks, the team pushed the boulder aside and stepped back outside.

The Blood Vultures were gone.

But standing at the edge of the canyon, blocking the only path forward, was a large group of players clad in red and black armor—the Rossetti guild. At least fifteen strong, all above Level 12, armed with enchanted weapons and reinforced armor.

At their head stood a cloaked archer, his bow strung with a venomous green arrow. In his hand, he held a tattered scrap of ancient parchment—matching the pattern of the scroll from the village elder.

He lifted it, smiling coldly.

"Looking for this?" he called. "You're too late, Ghost Wolf. The clue belongs to us."

Karen's hand tightened around the hilt of his sword. The canyon fell silent.

The hunt was no longer a game of cat and mouse.

It was a battle for survival.

And the first move had already been made.
