Chapter 3 - Chapter Three - Collateral Damage**

By morning, Amara Vale no longer belonged to herself.

Her name both of them were everywhere.

Screens in cafés. Financial blogs. Morning news panels dissecting her face like it was evidence. The headline had already mutated overnight, sharpened by speculation and fear.

WHISTLEBLOWER OR MASTER MANIPULATOR?

She sat in the back seat of Julian's car, knees drawn together, hands clasped tightly in her lap. The city blurred past the tinted windows, familiar streets suddenly hostile.

"Phones off," Julian said, breaking the silence.

She handed him hers without argument. He dropped it into a signal-blocking pouch along with his own.

"Where are we going?" she asked.

"A place that still owes me discretion."

That didn't reassure her.

They stopped in an underground garage beneath an unmarked building. No signage. No security desk. Just a private elevator waiting like it already knew them.

Inside the elevator, Amara finally spoke. "You knew."

Julian didn't look at her. "I suspected."

"That this would happen?"

"That they'd move fast once they had leverage."

She swallowed. "And my father?"

The elevator slowed.

Julian turned then. His expression was carved from restraint. "I spent twelve years believing your father destroyed my mother for profit."

Amara's chest tightened. "And now?"

"And now," he said quietly, "I believe he was following orders."

The doors opened.

The office upstairs was sparse steel, glass, no personal touches. The kind of place meant to leave no emotional fingerprints.

A woman stood by the window.

She was older, silver-haired, posture sharp as a blade.

"Julian," she said. "You brought her."

"This is Mara Lin," Julian said. "She used to work with my mother."

Mara turned. Her gaze landed on Amara and softened.

"So you're his daughter," she murmured.

Amara flinched. "You knew my father?"

"I knew what they let me know," Mara said. "And I knew your name long before today."

Julian stiffened. "You never told me."

"I was trying to keep you alive," Mara replied calmly. Then she looked back at Amara. "They're not after money."

Amara frowned. "Then what?"

"Precedent," Mara said. "Your father broke a rule. He proved that the system could bleed."

Julian's jaw tightened. "That's why they destroyed him."

"And why they'll destroy her," Mara said softly.

She moved to the desk and pulled out a thin folder.

Inside were sealed reports. Death certificates. Financial records.

One photo slid free.

Evelyn Cross.

Cause of death: Suicide.

Mara's voice dropped. "Your father tried to stop it. He failed."

Amara stared at the image, guilt crushing her lungs. "Then why frame me?"

"Because systems don't punish the dead," Mara said. "They punish examples."

A sharp knock sounded at the door.

Julian was already moving, hand at his sidearm.

The knock came again louder.

"Internal Affairs," a voice called. "Open the door."

Mara's eyes widened. "They found me."

Julian turned to Amara. "Back exit. Now."

"What about you?" she demanded.

"I'll slow them down."

Mara grabbed Amara's arm. "Listen to me," she said urgently. "If they offer you immunity in exchange for silence don't take it. That's how they win."

The door began to open.

Julian locked eyes with Amara.

"Run," he said.

She ran.

Down the stairs. Through a side corridor. Out into daylight that felt too bright for what she'd just learned.

Her phone vibrated in her pocket she'd taken it back without realizing.

A message waited.

YOU SEE NOW.

PAYMENT COMES NEXT.

Behind her, sirens wailed.

Amara didn't stop running.
