Chapter 11 - A Normal-type of Encounter

In the Petalburg Woods, where a vast canopy cast its shade, making it hard to predict the weather for today. Sporadic rays of sunlight filter through the crisscrossing branches, struggling to penetrate the thick foliage.

As the forest grows denser, the air becomes increasingly humid, and the earth is infused with the scent of fresh grass. In the underbrush, Bug-type Pokémon scuttle about, exercising as they climb up and down. Occasionally, one or two pause to curiously observe the humans passing by, who continue their morning routines without a second glance. Nearby, a timid Lotad and a Lombre quickly retreat into the grass. Above them, a Seedot munches happily on fruit.

This is how a beautiful day begins.

As Ben walks along the path, he leaves behind yesterday's loneliness, feeling uplifted as he takes in the beauty of nature. After battling the Breloom yesterday, his Onix has grown stronger. On this journey, he plans to challenge both wild Pokémon and trainers with his Mudkip, ensuring it stays competitive and doesn't fall too far behind in training and tactics.

While he strategizes for his Mudkip, a figure suddenly emerges from the grass. Wearing a straw hat and holding an insect net, the vibrant figure springs into action, standing confidently in the middle of the path.

"I've been waiting for you, Trainer! Are you ready for a Pokémon battle?"

"Go, my Wurmple! Poison Sting!" the boy shouts, tossing a Poké Ball.

"Mudkip, let's go!" Ben commands.

"Boom!"

"Oh no, my Wurmple! You're really strong! I'll be back!" the boy calls out as he retreats into the grass.

Ben shakes his head at the vanishing bug catcher, a rookie level 5 Bug Catcher. He realizes he didn't even earn experience from that encounter, it wasn't worth his time.

"Come back, Mudkip! Let's keep moving."

However, the appearance of the bug catcher seems to have opened the floodgates. Along the way, trainers emerge to challenge him, and grass-type and bug-type Pokémon leap out to block his path. Eventually, with the experience gained from these encounters, his Mudkip levels up to LV14, learning the Supersonic move, and inching closer to evolution, his training goals are being met.

The scenery of the forest changes dramatically. After leaving the wetlands and dense grass, Ben finds himself in a rare clearing. The trees here grow tall and straight, unlike the massive trees he passed before. Their varied shapes create a roof over the path, with branches forming an intricate lattice that showcases nature's artistry.

"Hello there! Are you a Pokémon Trainer?"

A polite voice draws Ben's attention. He sees a boy dressed in a black t-shirt, yellow overalls, and a red sports cap adorned with a league badge, smiling brightly at him.

"Yes, I am," Ben replies, intrigued.

"I'm Tim from Petalburg City! I'm traveling to become a Normal-type expert. Want to battle?"

Surprised, Ben thinks, "Is he a fan of Norman?" He scratches his head, feeling a little flustered.

"As a Pokémon Trainer, I can't refuse a challenge," he finally responds, feeling excitement build at the prospect of facing a worthy opponent.

"I'm Ben from Dewford Town, aspiring to be a master of rock and ground-type Pokémon! Let's battle!" he declares.

Tim claps his hands cheerfully. "Fantastic! Let's have a 2v2 battle! Go, my warrior, Taillow!" He throws a Poké Ball, and a small Pokémon resembling a barn swallow appears mid-air.

Taillow has dark blue feathers covering most of its body, white feathers on its belly, and red feathers on its head and neck. Its grey eyes and yellow beak complete its look.

"Taillow!" Tim boasts. "It may be small, but it's incredibly brave! It challenges even the strongest foes without hesitation."

"Whoa~!"

Taillow, Level 16! Attributes: Normal + Flying. Personality: Arrogant. Unique Traits: Guts - enhanced attack when afflicted with a status ailment!

Ben watches the Taillow in the sky. "Let's see what you can do!" he thinks, ready to test his Mudkip.

"Let's go!" he shouts, tossing the Poké Ball into the air. In a flash of white light, his energetic Mudkip appears, ready to face the challenge.

"Perfect!" Tim exclaims, his eyes sparkling with enthusiasm. "Taillow, gather your energy!"

"Tail!" Taillow inhales deeply, focusing its power.

"Don't focus on that! Mudkip, use Water Gun!" Ben instructs.

Blue energy coalesces in the fish's mouth and bursts forth as a water stream aimed directly at Taillow. Taillow deftly dodges the attack with a flap of its wings.

"Now, strike with a Quick Attack!" Tim commands, gesturing emphatically.

"Whoosh!"

Taillow transforms into a blur, diving towards Mudkip. Ben calculates the distance and anticipates the moment to act.

"Very fast! Supersonic, now! Follow up with Rock Throw!" he orders.

The Mudkip emits an invisible sound wave, causing Taillow to falter momentarily in the air. Despite this, it relies on its momentum to close in on Mudkip, landing a hit and causing it to recoil.

Gritting its teeth, Mudkip pushes against the ground, using any remaining strength to launch a Rock Throw attack.

"Whoosh!"

Taillow stumbles but quickly regains its balance, high above the battlefield. However, a rock strikes one of its wings, eliciting a cry of pain.

Although Mudkip is solely a Water type, using Rock-type moves against a Flying type makes a significant impact despite not being a STAB move.

"Taillow, stay airborne! Use Double Team!" Tim commands, aiming to exploit the flying advantage.

"Not so fast! Use Supersonic to disrupt!" Ben shouts back.

"Don't give it a chance! Hurricane!" Tim yells.

"Whoosh!"

A powerful wind spirals through the field, interrupting Mudkip's Ultrasonic and sending it tumbling into the air, flapping its limbs in panic. It looks to Ben for guidance.

"Kip? Kip!"

What a storm!

Ben tries to stifle a laugh at the sight of his Mudkip caught in the chaos. "Stay calm, Mudkip! Use your most powerful Water Gun and break free from the storm's grasp!"

"It's too late! Taillow, Quick Attack combined with Wing Attack!" Tim seizes the opportunity, commanding another assault while Mudkip struggles.

With a surge of white energy, Taillow rushes towards Mudkip, wings charged with energy, striking before it can recover.

As the storm subsides, Ben kneels beside his Mudkip. "Can you still fight?" he asks, holding up a luxury ball to recall it if necessary.

"Kiiiip~!" Mudkip pants heavily, barely able to stay on its feet. Despite the lack of attribute bonuses, the physical attacks have taken their toll. It gazes up at the enemy, determination in its eyes, and nods at Ben to signal that it's ready to continue.

Seeing the newfound fighting spirit in Mudkip, so different from its earlier demeanor against the Breloom, fills Ben with pride. This is growth.

"Excellent! Show everyone your strength! Mudkip!" he encourages.

"Mudkip!"

"You can keep going?" Tim asks, surprised at Mudkip's tenacity. He gives a thumbs-up, impressed.

"You're a tough opponent! Now let's show our fighting spirit Taillow, unleash a Hurricane!"

"Tailll!"

Once again, Taillow summons a fierce wind, sweeping across the arena.

"Mudkip, brace yourself and dig in!" Ben commands.

Mudkip digs its arms into the ground, grounding itself against the storm's ferocity.

"It won't help! Taillow, Quick Attack and Wing Attack!" Tim shouts, ready to strike.

"Hold on, Mudkip! Wait for the right moment!"

Ben is poised for an opening, anticipating the perfect chance to counterattack.

As the storm weakens, Taillow swoops in for the hit!

"Now!" Ben exclaims. "Release the power of your Rock Throw!"

"Wha—?" Tim starts to protest, but it's too late.

A wave of blue energy envelops Mudkip, enhancing its strength as it thrusts its arms upward, lifting a huge rock along with it. With all its might, it hurls the rock toward the incoming Taillow, timing the throw perfectly.

This is it, the ideal moment for a decisive blow!

"Kiiiip,"

With a powerful effort, both arms shot up from the ground, lifting a massive rock alongside him. With all his strength, he hurled it at the Taillow diving toward him.

What a move! The acceleration of the dive combined with the addition of a super effective strike!

It was the perfect moment, everything aligning just right!
