Chapter 1 - Prologue

Heavy clouds....The sky looked ready to split open at any moment. That was the first thing he saw, just waking up. For a moment, he just stared at them, trying to understand why he was staring at the sky at all. He was lying on cold pavement in the middle of the street; the empty road streching around him. His body felt stiff, like he had been there for hours.

Or longer.

He sat up, trying to register everything at once...The sky, the cold air, the pounding in his head. His vision blurred for a moment. His hand felt sticky so he lifted it slowly. Blood covered his left palm and stained the sleeve of his shirt...but no sign of injury. For a second he just stared at it..waiting to feel something worse than confusion. The panic came slowly his breath quickening at the sight.

".....What?"

His hand trembled slightly and instinctively his hand moved to his pockets searching for his phone...he took it out as he started to register his surrounding...bodies lay scattered at the corners of the street. Some slumped against the cars. Some faced the sky, eyes open. None of them moved. Cars stood abandoned, some with doors hanging open. He tried to stand but swayed, his legs unsteady beneath him.

As he rose to his feet, his grip loosened and the phone almost slipped from his hand. Panic was finally catching up to him...his fingers trembled around the phone. He couldn't tell if his shaking was from the fear or the cold.

"What happened?" His voice wavered.

He looked at his phone..The screen lit up. One unread message. From Lily...The name felt unfamiliar to him..

'Please answer me'...a message that was sent 12 hours ago.

His trembling hand hovered over the notification before moving to the keypad. He wanted to type something..to type the password to unlock the phone. He waited for the numbers to feel familiar. That's when the realization hits him.

He doesn't remember his password.

He doesn't remember anything.

He looked at his surrounding again like something was gonna change..like something was supposed to change.

He forced himself to move while trying to avoid looking at the bodies. The sound of his footsteps were too loud in the silence.

He stopped beside an abandoned car and looked into the window. A pale face stared back at him. Dark hair sticking to his forehead. Dried blood traced down from his temple. His reflection felt unfamiliar...he was staring at his reflection when a sudden shriek cut through the silence. He jumped back, heart slamming against his ribs. He turned to the opposite direction from the sound..

That's when he saw it. Down the street, something stood in the middle of the road. Even from distance, something about it's shape was wrong. Too tall. Too still...and definitely not human. His heart pounded so hard it hurt. But his legs refused to move.

The creature shifted.

Then it took one step forward.
