Chapter 20 - Chapter 20: Making Spells an Art

As a master of magic, Newt knew exactly where Kate's problem lay.

Most young wizards haven't fully developed physically and lack sufficient magic power, making the casting of spells somewhat difficult for them. Only through constant practice to spur magical growth and gain familiarity with the spells can they successfully release them.

In this process, talent indeed plays a role. If a child with average talent and one with top-tier talent learn the same spell simultaneously, one might need a day or even a month to master it, while the other might need only a few hours or even less.

However, at least for basic daily spells, every child has the capacity to learn them all and cast them reasonably well. It is only with more advanced or top-tier spells that talent plays a more decisive role.

Those top legendary wizards are, without exception, geniuses of outstanding natural talent.

But Kate was different. Whether it was magic power, talent, or knowledge of the magical world, she lacked none of them. Yet precisely because of this, her current situation had arisen.

"The Levitation Charm is an introductory spell for young wizards at Hogwarts. It requires focused patience and precise control over the spell."

Newt sat in his chair, picking up a feather. With a gentle flick of his wand, he intoned, "Wingardium Leviosa."

The feather in his palm floated up unsteadily and hovered in the air.

While maintaining the feather, Newt looked up and asked, "Can you tell the difference between my Levitation Charm and yours?"

From the pause in the incantation to the variation in movement, Kate couldn't spot any difference between his method and hers.

Since it wasn't an external factor, it must be related to the internal process, right?

Picking up her wand again, Kate carefully aimed at the feather and whispered, "Wingardium Leviosa."

Everything around her began to shake in response, as if ready to break free from Earth's gravity and fly high at any moment.

Kate stared intently at the feather, even her hand holding the wand trembling slightly. Although it was just the simplest Levitation Charm, the process of casting it caused a thin layer of sweat to bead on her forehead.

After a long silence, the feather in her palm was finally pulled by her magic, shakily detaching from her hand. Then, it plummeted back down.

Kate threw her head back and gasped for air, her pitch-black eyes clearly showing a moment of dazed distraction.

Just a little bit more. She had been so close to success.

"You still have a long way to go. You need to be more focused."

Newt shook his head, stood up, and placed his feather in front of her. "Practice slowly. You will succeed eventually."

As he spoke, he saw Kate, seemingly having not heard him, aim at the feather and recite the incantation again. And this time, the disturbance among the small objects around her was slightly less than before.

Newt smiled with gratification, quietly closed the door, and left the room.

Magic power was Kate's biggest problem.

Because she had never cast spells under proper guidance, yet had grown up immersed in a magical environment, she must have seen spells like the Levitation Charm countless times. But because of this, after possessing a massive amount of magic power herself, Kate took it for granted and began to imitate the spells she had seen.

The true Levitation Charm requires precise casting on a specific object; focus and precise control of magic are crucial. However, without guidance, Kate subconsciously chose a shortcut, using her massive magic to forcibly cast the spell.

In layman's terms, it was essentially: "I can't target you specifically, but I can sweep the area."

That was why, when she cast the spell, the things around her were affected by the massive release of magic and floated up with it. But this ran counter to the requirements of focus and precise control inherent to the Levitation Charm.

Of course, Newt knew his little apprentice didn't do this intentionally. Lacking systematic learning, her body subconsciously chose the most convenient path. But if this continued for a long time, she would inevitably go astray.

Who would have thought that the Levitation Charm, extremely simple for ordinary young wizards, would become an insurmountable threshold for Kate, whose talent far exceeded her peers?

This must be quite a blow to the little girl in the room.

Standing outside the door, he sighed softly. Turning around, he saw his wife about to bring up some tea and snacks.

"Let her practice alone for a while," he whispered to his wife. The two of them tiptoed downstairs from the second floor.

The old couple busied themselves with housework downstairs while anxiously waiting for time to pass.

Finally, it was dinner time. Seeing it was getting late, Tina pretended nothing was amiss and went upstairs to knock on the door.

"My dear, it's time for dinner..."

Her voice came to an abrupt halt the moment she pushed the door open.

Everything within her field of vision was in a floating state. Even Kate herself was holding her wand, hovering comfortably in mid-air.

Has the child still not grasped the essentials of the Levitation Charm?

She couldn't help but think this, forcing a loving smile onto her face. "Little Kate, let's practice after dinner."

"Okay, I got it!" Kate smiled in mid-air and landed lightly on the floor.

At the same time, the wand in her hand flicked continuously, returning all the floating objects before her to their original positions one by one.

Watching her movements, Tina's pupils constricted slightly.

This wasn't object suspension caused by magical overflow, but rather Levitation Charms applied with varying degrees of force to each item individually.

Ordinary young wizards practice the Levitation Charm starting with objects of different weights, always training on a single target. But Kate was actually controlling objects of different weights and sizes simultaneously!

Although many accomplished wizards could cast spells with divided attention, very few could learn it without a teacher right at the beginning of their magical studies.

Don't look down on the fact that Kate was only casting the Levitation Charm with divided focus; this was merely the result of one afternoon's practice. She would certainly improve in the future.

Mastery of one principle leads to mastery of all. Would there come a day when Kate could grow to the point of withstanding an army of thousands alone?

Kate remained completely unaware of the storm she had stirred in Tina's heart, still intently controlling the Levitation Charm she had just learned. After sending the last piece of bedding back to its place, she skipped over and held Tina's hand.

"Ma'am, let's go eat dinner!"
