Chapter 243 - Chapter 243 The Lucky Earl

Grand Master Paisell's scholar's necklace was made of twenty-four different metal pieces, representing his mastery of twenty-four different fields of expertise. The heavy metal pieces hung from his neck to his chest.

The black iron plate in the necklace represents Ravenology, bronze represents astronomy, brass represents history, platinum represents accounting, white iron represents war, white steel represents forging, silver represents medicine, tinplate represents geography, and gold represents agriculture…

The only metal plate that Grand Maester Paisell lacked was Valyrian steel. Valyrian steel represented magic and mysticism, and perhaps only one out of a hundred maesters in the Citadel of Oldtown would possess a chain made of Valyrian steel. In a place where scholars, physicians, and scientists gathered, studying the mystical arts was looked down upon by most maesters.

The learned scholar, Professor Paisell, saw a thermometer with mercury as the temperature medium for the first time. Moreover, unlike any thermometer he knew, this thermometer was very slender, with a small bulb at the end and a sealed opening at the top.

The thermometer is marked with several temperature numbers: 0, 50, 60, 70, and 100 degrees.

Julie, who was accompanying them, then took out an hourglass.

The hourglass time is measured in 30-minute increments.

Jenny addressed the King, Queen, Grand Tutor, Treasurer, and Intelligence Minister, saying, "The thermometer indicates the temperature required to kill germs. Above 70 degrees, the texture (nutritional structure) of milk will be destroyed, and below 60 degrees, some pathogenic bacteria will still survive. The hourglass controls the time during the sterilization process; a complete hourglass indicates that the sterilization process of the milk is complete."

The king, queen, and others were completely confused.

Learning is always dry and boring, and often leaves one with only a vague understanding.

But none of that matters. What matters is whether following these steps will still cause illness.

As for the underlying principles, no one except Maester Paisell would really be interested in figuring them out.

Soon, a copper pan, charcoal fire, and milk were brought in together. Following Mrs. Jenny's instructions, a white filter cloth was also quickly brought in. After the milk was filtered, it was poured into the copper pan, and the charcoal fire was lit.

Jenny placed the thermometer into the milk, and the mercury inside began to rise slowly. When it reached sixty degrees, Jenny told the maid to control the charcoal fire and turned over an hourglass, the sand flowing down rapidly. Everyone stared wide-eyed as the mercury in the thermometer fluctuated between 60 and 70 degrees.

"Jenny!" Cersei came over and took Jenny's hand affectionately. She pulled Jenny aside to whisper, "I heard that Father has adopted you as his daughter?"

"Yes, Your Majesty."

Cersei's idol is her father, Tywin Lannister. She admires him greatly and once thought that if she were a man, she would have been as ruthless and authoritative as her father, ruling the Westerlands. Jeyne is beautiful and intelligent, and the thermometer she invented astounded even Grand Maester Percy. Cersei saw this and knew it was remarkable science, so she deliberately accepted the adopted daughter whom even her father admired.

Cersei deliberately accepted Jeyne for another reason: The Mountain!

Both the Mountain and the Hound are loyal and fierce dogs of House Lannister, but the Mountain is clearly more formidable than the Hound and has his own following. The stronger the Mountain, the safer she feels as the eldest daughter of House Lannister.

"Don't call me Your Majesty, call me Sister." Cersei smiled radiantly. Her beauty was captivating, and her smile made her even more so. Her face was almost a perfect replica of Jaime's, the only difference being their demeanor. Her demeanor was radiant and bright, while Jaime's was sharp and proud.

"elder sister!"

"Sister, I couldn't make it to your wedding to congratulate you, please don't be offended." Cersei took off the jade bracelet from her wrist and, with a polite but insistent gesture, put it on Jenny's wrist.

Jenny took off the pearl necklace from her neck and put it on Cersei, calling her "sister" as if she had honey on her lips.

Both women were exceptionally beautiful, like two flowers of different colors and kinds, each with its own unique beauty and fragrance.

Meanwhile, the men showed no interest in the meeting between the two women, instead discussing national affairs concerning milk and the people's livelihood. Littlefinger and Octopus both believed that if Lady Jenny's experiment proved successful, she should receive a reward from the king in recognition of her great contribution to the kingdom.

King Robert, a generous man, readily agreed, though he did not yet know what reward Lady Jenny should receive.

It was as if a fleeting moment, the light of an hourglass, had passed. Julie instructed the servants to extinguish the charcoal fire; the time for the milk to kill germs had come. Grand Secretary Paisell had memorized the upper and lower limits of the temperature and the time of the hourglass. He had figured out the principle behind the airtight seal of this thermometer—it was to minimize temperature deviations and achieve maximum accuracy.

After filtering the second basin of milk, it was poured into a copper pan. Grand Secretary Paisell personally took charge of the fire test. When the mercury in the thermometer exceeded 60 degrees, he controlled the charcoal fire and simultaneously reversed the hourglass to start timing.

King Robert patiently read through the first reading, but by the second, he felt it was pointless. The milk sterilization method was so simple, without any complicated mystery. The king then began to drink continuously.

Varys chuckled, "Your Majesty, Lady Jenny's significant contributions are beyond doubt. What will you reward her with? Money or a title?"

The honor bestowed by the King was far greater than that bestowed by Lord Tywin Lannister. In 282 Aegon's reign, Lord Tywin Lannister, in order to grant the Mountain the highest knighthood, earnestly requested Prince Rhaegar to knight him. These seemingly small acts demonstrate the considerable effort Lord Tywin Lannister put into taming the Mountain.

Lord Tywin Lannister could certainly knight the Mountain, but it would be more honorable to have Prince Rhaegar bestow the title upon him.

Littlefinger chuckled, "Lord Varys, I think His Majesty should skip the monetary reward. Winning two championships at the Tournament of the Mountain already provides enough. I think His Majesty should reward Lady Jenny with a title instead. Lady Jenny will gain honor without burdening the treasury—a win-win situation!"

King Robert, like the Mountain, valued money highly and regarded titles lightly. He said, "Since you two have personally confirmed it, I believe Lady Jenny's method is truly effective. Ser Barristan, go and invite the Queen and Lady Jenny over. I would like to ask Lady Jenny what title she desires as a reward."

King Robert was always very generous with titles that didn't cost money.

Lady Jenny received a title from the King that was far more honorable and prestigious than the one she received from Duke Tywin. However, it was highly likely that the King would not grant Jenny any lands as a reward.

Lady Jenny and the Queen came over hand in hand, and Julie added honey to the freshly sterilized milk and served it to everyone except the King and Queen.

Littlefinger, Octopus, Grand Master, Barristan, The Mountain, Lancel, Anguill, Julie herself, and the four Clegane Knights all drank a bowl of fresh milk.

Milk with honey at just the right temperature is delicious and makes you feel warm and comfortable after drinking it.

The king then drank a bowl as well, and the fresh taste of the milk was not ruined by the high temperature. King Robert felt quite good about it.

"Madam Jenny, your invention of the thermometer has greatly shocked and impressed the Grand Master Paisell. I fully believe that the science you and Maester Assa developed to kill pathogenic bacteria in milk is a very successful scientific achievement. Madam, what honorary title do you wish to receive? Just tell me, and I will bestow it upon you."

Honorary titles are nothing more than empty names without any territory.

Nevertheless, Jenny will have the opportunity to acquire a piece of land once a vacancy becomes available.

"Your Majesty, the scientific inspiration for milk to kill germs came from my husband, Sir Gregor's, unintentional remark. If Your Majesty wishes to reward him, then bestow upon Sir Gregor the rank of Earl. A wife gains wealth through her husband; if Sir Gregor becomes wealthy, I will also become wealthy."

The king's commendation meant that the scientific methods for thermometers and milk sterilization now belonged to the royal family, free of charge—a far better deal than purchasing the patented technology from the Citadel. The national treasury was already strained, so every penny saved was precious.

King Robert looked at the Mountain and laughed, "Damn Mountain, you've married a fine wife."

Queen Cersei smiled slightly. The king had said these hurtful things to her for sixteen years, and she was used to it. Nothing had ever abhorred Cersei more than the king shouting Lyanna Stark's name as he forcefully entered her on their wedding night.

"Damn it, I don't have your luck, Mountain. Well, to honor Lady Jenny's remarkable invention of the thermometer, and even more remarkable science of milk disinfection…" A sly glint flashed in the King's eyes, "Sir Gregor, kneel down now, and I will bestow upon you the honor of being the kingdom's Lucky Earl, and grant you a large territory."

Sir Gregor, though unruly, immediately knelt on one knee, placed his right fist on his left chest over his heart, bowed deeply, and appeared humble.

choke!

King Robert rose, drew the longsword from Barristan's waist, approached the Mountain, and touched the tip of his sword to the Mountain's right shoulder. He proclaimed in a high-pitched, almost singing voice, "In the name of Robert I of House Baratheon, King of the Andals, Rhoynar, and the First Men, Ruler of the Seven Kingdoms and Protector of the Realm, I hereby bestow upon Gregor Clegane the title of Earl of Fortune of the Kingdom, and grant you the entire lands of Castamere and Tarbeck Hall in the Westerlands..."

Queen Cersei was stunned, unwilling to believe it; Lady Jenny was also dumbfounded; The Mountain knelt down and bowed his head, but remained expressionless!

The abandoned Castamere and Taber Halls are a colossal monument erected by Lord Tywin Lannister to intimidate the nobles of the Westerlands, but also a sore spot for the Duke himself.
