The room didn't feel empty.
That was the problem.
They had cleared it hours ago.
Checked every corner.
Every shadow.
Every possible exit.
Nothing.
And yet—
no one stepped inside.
"You're sure he was here?" one of them asked.
The man at the door didn't answer immediately.
His eyes stayed fixed on the center of the room.
"…he doesn't leave traces," he said finally.
"Then how do you know?"
A pause.
"…because something's missing."
That didn't make sense.
And that's what made it worse.
The others shifted uneasily.
Weapons stayed lowered—but not relaxed.
"What's missing?" someone pressed.
The man stepped in.
Slow.
Careful.
Like he expected the floor to react.
"He was here long enough," he said quietly,
"for this place to remember him."
Silence.
No one liked the way that sounded.
"Rooms don't remember," another muttered.
The man stopped walking.
"…this one does."
A faint mark stretched across the wall.
Barely visible.
Not a cut.
Not damage.
More like—
pressure.
As if something had leaned there…
and the wall hadn't fully recovered.
They all saw it now.
"…that's not normal," someone said.
"No," the man replied.
"…it's him."
A chill moved through the room.
Not wind.
Not air.
Something else.
"He's close," one of them whispered.
"No," the man corrected.
"He was."
That distinction mattered.
Because if he had already been here—
then he had already seen them.
Already understood.
Already decided.
A sound came from the hallway.
All of them turned instantly.
Nothing.
Just silence.
But different now.
Heavier.
"…we're too late," someone said.
The man at the center slowly looked down.
At the floor.
Footprints.
Not fresh.
Not clear.
But there.
Faint.
And leading—
Not out of the room.
But around them.
A circle.
He had walked around them.
Before they even arrived.
Before they even knew they were being watched.
"…he knew," someone whispered.
The man closed his eyes briefly.
"No," he said.
"He planned it."
The door behind them creaked slightly.
No one moved.
No one breathed.
Because all of them realized the same thing—
They hadn't entered the room to investigate him.
They had stepped into a place…
he had already prepared for them.
