In 1985 the U.S government discovered a new element of the coast of Brazil, a glowing purple rock that would regenerate over time after mining it. The world at large also started mining it in 1990. This mineral was called Fayaz or more commonly known as fay stone. What the Fayaz did was power it could be used in weapons and it could out produce nuclear and it was safer.
After the world became dependent on the new element odd things started to happen. At first it was some people would become stronger or faster after extended exposure but there were some negative effects like people with these changes or mutations they would become sterile when with people without the changes this non-issue when with the exposed. This was not a problem for most because half of the population mined or otherwise worked or lived with the material. There was some push in some countries to restrict the affected in the 2000s and 2010s but by that point the number of affected greatly outnumber the population of the non-affected. Not to mention by the 2010s fay stone mining and other industries were estimated to be a multi trillion dollar industry. So nothing came of said push.
By 2030 the changes started when dimensional entities started appearing more commonly called monsters or mobs. At first military and local law enforcement was enough to contain the localised events but by the mid 2030s it was not enough and by the year 2050 every human was moved to colonies on both mars and the moon.
But Fayaz was not on either the moon or mars so prisoners were sent back to earth to kill the monsters and to mine the Fayaz. As without the mineral the colonies would fail causing the extension of man in the universe.
