Chapter 2 - Chapter Two

2

Oberste:

In the sky, clear as a crystal ocean, a fracture formed—pulsating energy. People, wherever eyes could see the sky, gathered and began to snap photos of the anomaly.

"What could that be?"

Many people murmured, unaware that the cause was walking amongst them.

With his hands in his pockets, he strolled casually with a self-satisfied grin on his face—knowing full well the fracture was caused by his existence. Though the easy solution would be to leave this world, he didn't want to, and he wasn't going to.

The fracture continued to lengthen unnaturally, other cracks forming along with it. People began to fear, some even fleeing the area.

"Oberste."

His eyes widened as he picked up the sound of his name, looking around the streets to find… that he was in a forest? But he was just in the city? As he was wondering what happened, a figure materialised in front of him—tall and radiating a blinding light.

Oberste had to shield his eyes, the light being too much even for him.

"Who the hell…?"

Oberste muttered, but before the question was out of his lips, the figure spoke:

"God."

"God?"

"Yes."

Oberste let out a very unnecessary scoff, his pride refusing to let him submit even in the face of God himself—the creator and sustainer of everything. His eyes slowly began to adapt to the blinding holy light, but God's face was still not seen.

"And why's God coming to visit me? Am I that interesting?"

Oberste said, his words dripping with high-and-mighty arrogance. For many long and unbearable moments, God did not speak.

"You need to leave."

God simply said.

"No."

The instant Oberste spoke that word, the universe around him seemed to fold like paper, swallowing his being whole without any warning. With that, the fractures in the sky slowly healed and God dusted his hands with a sigh before disappearing.

Meanwhile, Oberste fell into a void, hitting what seemed to be the ground. With a loud groan, he slowly got up and dusted himself off.

"Benevolent God my ass. Bunch of lies those stories are."

Oberste muttered to himself in frustration, his burgundy eyes scanning the surroundings that seemed to stretch endlessly—the area was like outer space, but with nothing in it.

Soon enough, his eyes landed onto a small but cosy looking house, and a woman at the front porch. She was… sipping tea…?

She was surely harmless. She looked the part, at least. However, for some reason unknown to Oberste, his instincts were screaming at him. His body twitched—as if wanting to run away.

The woman's eyes, golden in colour like the sun, slowly moved to look at him in the distance. She remained still, her expression betraying nothing. Only calm.

He felt cold. Unbelievably cold.

"Just who in the hell is that…"

He thought.

For the first time in his life, Oberste felt small.
