Chapter 12 - The Truth of Silver

"What is this?"

Geno's strange behavior quickly attracted Lucia's attention. Geno didn't hide it and spread the document in his hand for Lucia to see.

"Silver Base Abandonment Notice?"

The little sheep-person's ears twitched; it seemed all the anomalies now made sense.

"Eh? So this place has already been abandoned? No wonder we haven't seen anyone."

Geno roughly scanned the report, and then understood the sequence of events.

It turned out that before the Silver Squad, which Twiggy belonged to, was completely wiped out, the abandonment of this base had already been put on the agenda.

The reason was that the manufacturing cost of the Silver Project's artificial humans was quite high, far exceeding what was needed to train a soldier, and the quality of the finished products was uneven.

Thus, to prevent the military's funds from going down the drain, this experiment was halted, and the entire base located within the Hollow was abolished.

At the same time, because it violated humanitarian principles, the Silver Project was completely sealed away, becoming an unknown ghost project.

"In other words, this base has become ownerless property? After all, the Defense Force doesn't want it anymore."

Lucia was right. Since the military had already abandoned this place, then he...

"However, we really haven't seen anything useful left along the way. They probably took it all."

Hearing this, Geno's brows knit tightly together. Don't tell me the medicine he was looking for was also taken away?

"That's about enough. Let's move on."

"Ehh~ Alright~_~."

After some more time passed, when Lucia felt her two long legs no longer belonged to her, they finally arrived at the location of the laboratory marked on the map.

Before this, the two had already gone to the infirmary, but aside from some simple medical supplies and daily medications, the orange bottle from his memory wasn't there at all.

And this laboratory was their last hope.

"Don't worry, it'll definitely be fine."

Lucia was cheering him on from the side, soothing Geno's emotions, simply like a little angel.

"I hope so."

Taking a deep breath, Geno opened the laboratory door. What greeted his eyes was total darkness.

This was normal; after all, power to the entire base had been cut, so it wasn't strange at all for it to be pitch black at night.

The two searched the laboratory; every cabinet and drawer was turned over. The messy appearance didn't look like a high-tech laboratory at all.

Geno, yielding no results, soon became a bit impatient. Could it be they really couldn't find the medicine?

But soon, Geno noticed something was off.

Why was it much warmer here than outside?

Very strange, wasn't it? Even though the entire building had no power supply, and the air conditioning should naturally be off, the temperature here was maintained very well.

Looking around, the dark environment had absolutely no effect on him, an Ethereal.

Finally, he found the anomaly in this laboratory.

"There seems to be some mechanism here?"

Looking at a wall inside the room, Geno knocked on it with his hand and found it was hollow inside. There was definitely something fishy behind this.

"Lucia, step back."

"Oh."

Geno didn't have the patience to find some switch. At times like this, the simplest method was often the most effective.

He then Etherealized his arm, and next, only a 'thud' was heard.

The wall shattered in response, revealing a long corridor.

"Th-This! Could this be! A hidden laboratory hiding unspeakable secrets!"

Lucia simply couldn't believe her eyes. To think another mysterious space was hidden inside this laboratory.

Just as her eyes lit up and she excitedly wanted to explore the unknown, Geno stopped her.

"Be careful. You continue looking here; I'll go take a look first."

Considering safety issues, Geno decided to go ahead and check. And when he truly saw the things inside, he was extremely grateful for his decision.

Thud!

"These scumbags!!"

A fist struck the wall, causing two more layers of dust to fall from the passage behind him, seemingly reflecting Geno's terrible mood at this moment.

What he saw wasn't some mysterious treasure or military secrets of the Silver forces, but the dirty business scripture of some disgusting things.

Here, countless cultivation tanks stood in great numbers. And what was placed inside these tanks was nothing else but human organs.

Including but not limited to hearts, kidneys, eyeballs, and the like.

Even more disgusting was that on the table right in front of Geno lay a corpse that hadn't finished being dissected yet. Although it had no head, judging by the body, it should be a Silver forces subject just like Twiggy and the others.

Only, compared to Twiggy and her group, this corpse had many traces of Ether Corruption on it; obviously, it was a failed 'product'.

"There are these dirty parasites everywhere."

Geno suppressed the anger in his heart and searched this 'secret base,' and he really did find some things.

On the operation records on the table, the origin of this nauseating room was written.

This was a hidden space opened up by the researchers of the Silver forces. Its purpose was just as Geno had seen: to 'recycle waste' by taking the subjects eliminated from experiments, harvesting usable organs, and selling them on the black market for money.

After all, although the higher-ups approved a lot of funds for the Silver Project, not much was left for this group of experimenters. They could only figure out ways to rake in a bit more for themselves.

Selling corpses was the best and safest method. So, they joined hands to build this secret 'morgue,' and even equipped it with an independent power supply system, just to avoid being investigated.

And precisely because it was hidden in plain sight, it had truly never been discovered.

It wasn't until the evacuation order came down from above recently that, in their panic, they couldn't attend to this place.

"Bastards! What do these guys think human lives are!"

According to the experiment records Geno saw, not only the defective products manufactured and those who died in experiments were used, but these experimenters would even intentionally cause 'errors' in experiments to get more 'stock' and obtain more profit.

The level of disgustingness of these people was simply beyond Geno's imagination.

"Geno, I found something. Check if this is it... Ah! Heavens!"

Having gotten results outside, Lucia bounced in to find Geno, only to be instantly shocked by everything before her eyes.

Corpses, bloodstains, organs—all assaulted Lucia's nerves.

Although she often wandered in the Hollow, Lucia was still just a young girl who hadn't seen much of the world. Where would she have seen such a scene?

"Th... This is... Bleugh~"

Lucia's legs went soft, and she fell to the ground, then supported herself against the wall and vomited violently.

"Don't be afraid. Don't be afraid, Lucia. I'm here. This is just a nightmare; forget it."

Geno immediately comforted Lucia, leading her slowly out of this space submerged in sin.

What he didn't know was that in a certain corner of the building, a red light symbolizing danger suddenly lit up.
