Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: Genji

Before the age of sixteen, Charles Serie had lived much like most young people, carefree, ordinary, yet quietly happy.

Back then, he had many interests.

He loved comics. He loved movies. Of course, he loved novels as well.

His youthful passion was not spent chasing girls or obsessing over grades; instead, it was devoted to the countless worlds of imagination.

He admired superheroes and dreamed of becoming one himself. That naïve yet blazing dream gave him a sense of justice far stronger than most, and with it came a habit of meddling in things that were not his concern.

Naturally, that led to disaster.

He injured the son of a powerful crime boss, and paid the price.

The gang slaughtered his parents. Only he managed to escape.

From that moment on, Charles buried every joy and dream he once had. His life existed for only one purpose: revenge.

Now that revenge had finally been fulfilled, he should have been able to face death without regret.

So why… was he lying in a hospital bed?

In the next instant, a cold mechanical voice sounded inside his mind:

["Host consciousness restored. Beginning identity memory integration. Uploading system operation manual."]

A piercing pain flooded his brain. When it finally subsided, he understood his situation.

He had transmigrated.

He had arrived in a bizarre new world, one centered around the Marvel Universe, yet interwoven with many other strange cinematic realities. In his newly acquired memories, there were companies like Stark Industries and Umbrella Corporation, and heroes such as Superman and Batman. The body he now occupied belonged to Dave Lizewski, the protagonist of the film Kick-Ass.

The reason for his transmigration was simple: he had been selected by the Hero Lottery System.

This system was described as a gift from the gods. In truth, he was little more than their toy, though, in kinder terms, he could be called their "actor," responsible for performing naturally within this extraordinary world.

The system itself was straightforward. It contained only a lottery wheel and a hero template. It issued no missions, imposed no punishments, offered no emergency assistance. The only benefit was a lottery draw that reset once at the beginning of each month.

Yet for Charles, now Dave Lizewski, this system was already more than sufficient. It was his greatest trump card for surviving in a world overflowing with overwhelming power.

Why?

Because the person whose body he now inhabited, Kick‑Ass, was nothing more than an ordinary human. No superpowers. No advanced technology. Only a burning sense of justice and the restless impulsiveness of youth.

In that sense, the two of them were very similar, at least, they once were.

Because of that same impulsive sense of justice, shortly before Charles arrived in this body, Dave had been stabbed through the abdomen during his first attempt at "playing hero," and then struck by a speeding car.

Charles tried moving his body and immediately felt how weak and sluggish it was. According to the memories he had inherited, many of the bones in this body had been replaced with metal plates during surgery. For the original protagonist, this steel‑reinforced body and dulled nerves had become an unusual advantage. But for Charles, a Warrior who had trained his body for years, there could hardly be anything worse.

A damaged body and dulled nerves meant that his physical vitality and mental focus could no longer flow in harmony. It meant he might never again reach the level he once had.

No… perhaps it wasn't impossible after all.

Lying in the hospital bed, Charles's eyes lit up. He still had the Hero Lottery System. A system rumored to contain everything related to heroes across different universe, what kind of surprises might it bring him?

With a thought, he summoned the system interface.

A transparent screen appeared before him, displaying three options: Hero Template, Lottery, and Inventory.

He selected Lottery.

The screen shimmered, transforming into a spinning wheel divided into five categories: Hero, Ability, Item, Attribute, and Companion. The pointer would stop on a category, then grant a random reward from within it.

Without hesitation, Charles activated the draw.

The pointer spun rapidly. After a few seconds, it slowed, passing Attribute, passing Companion, and finally stopping on Hero.

A notification appeared:

["Congratulations. You have obtained Hero Template: Genji."]

["Load Hero Template? Yes / No?"]

Curious, Charles selected Yes.

Instantly, the interface shifted to the Hero Template screen. Genji's portrait appeared in the upper corner, and at the same moment, silver‑white armor began materializing over Charles's body. In less than a second, a full mechanical exoskeleton covered him from head to toe, and a long sword appeared on his back.

The sudden transformation startled him slightly, though fortunately he was alone in the room and did not need to worry about being discovered.

As soon as the template finished loading, he felt power surge back into his body. Effortlessly, he flipped over on the hospital bed and rose into a crouch.

"What is this…"

Almost instinctively, his right hand flexed, and three shuriken slid from the arm guard into the spaces between his fingers.

Wait… wasn't this Genji from Overwatch?

His distant memories quickly confirmed the origin of the armor. If he remembered correctly, there should even be a long decorative ribbon trailing behind his helmet.

He checked Genji's abilities:

[Armor]: As a cybernetically enhanced warrior, Genji possesses a powerful mechanical exoskeleton.

[Shuriken]: Fires three shuriken at nearly bullet‑like speed.

[Deflect]: Swings the blade at superhuman speed to reflect incoming projectiles.

[Dash]: Performs a high‑speed dash, cutting through enemies along the path.

[Dragonblade]: Summons the Dragon Spirit, empowering the sword with immense destructive force.

[Agility]: Can freely climb walls and perform powerful double jumps.

Charles quickly understood how the hero template worked: once loaded, it layered the hero's abilities on top of his own physical foundation. He was fortunate to have drawn Genji, Genji wielded a powerful sword, and swordsmanship happened to be one of Charles's greatest strengths.

Inside the hospital room, he tested several of the newly acquired abilities. Aside from throwing the shuriken, he experimented with most of the others and gradually discovered several hidden mechanics.

For instance, the armor could appear or disappear at will, functioning almost like a skill. He didn't need to wear the conspicuous armor constantly and could still retain the base attribute enhancements from the hero template. However, without the exoskeleton, he could not use Shuriken, Deflect, or Dragonblade.

Additionally, some abilities had cooldown periods, possibly to prevent overheating or to allow energy recharge. Dash and Dragonblade both required cooldowns, though Dragonblade did not need to be charged through kills; once the cooldown ended, it could be used again. As for Deflect, while it had no cooldown, Charles knew from experience that it could not withstand extremely dense gunfire.

With the attribute bonuses provided by Genji, the lingering injuries in his body rapidly healed. After dismissing the armor, Charles casually stepped out of the hospital room.

Having been granted a second life, he had no intention of seeking death again. In this new world, a new impulse began to rise within him.

The childhood dream he had buried deep inside his heart started growing once more, until it filled his entire being.

Why not become a superhero?

Like Iron Man… or Spider‑Man…

No, if he truly wanted to be a real hero, his first idol should be Batman.

The Dark Knight of Gotham,

Batman, who refuses to kill.
