Chapter One: The Premonition
I woke up early, shaking off a strange, fuzzy dream. Two figures—two guys—were locked in a deep, agonizing kiss. It was the kind of scene I sometimes heard playing on my headphones, but never watched. *Weird.*
Shaking off the image, I got ready for school. I lived alone in a decent two-bedroom apartment, a safety net my fragile grandmother had bought with the trust fund she'd kept for my future. I wasn't the captain of the football team, but I wasn't a ghost either—just your regular, chill student with decent grades and a loving grandmother residing happily in a retirement home. Life was smooth: good friends, zero enemies, and an adorable girlfriend.
This, of course, was all before my life took a 180-degree turn for the absolute worst.
I headed to school with my headphones on, the soft, dramatic voices of an audio BL manga streaming into my ears. Honestly, I wasn't a manga guy at all. The only reason I had this audio was because of Cashandra, a freshman friend who practically forced it on me. I listened mostly out of slight curiosity, trying to follow the dramatic plot about one guy love the male lead and the other noticing that.
Monday morning was a familiar, boring drone: the loud chatter of students, the lingering scent of stale chalk, and the general apathy of being a senior.
The monotony was broken when a new student, Madison Sue Chang, introduced herself. She bowed politely, a vision of elegance. Taller than average, with pale white skin, golden-brown hair, and earthy green eyes. The boys drooled; the girls blushed. Her Asian surname and features suggested an exotic beauty. She took the seat beside mine and shot me a polite wave and a **sweet smile that genuinely felt like springtime.** I nodded back, focusing on the teacher.
Lunchtime arrived, and Madison was immediately swarmed. Students flocked to her like birds, curious about Vietnam, which I assumed was her home country. I stayed at my desk, eating a sandwich and playing a mobile game, avoiding the crowded cafeteria.
**BAM!** A hand slapped me hard on the back, causing me to choke on my sandwich.
"Hey man, what's up?" It was Willow, my best friend since pre-school. We were inseparable. He was small, average built, and had a soft, expressive voice.
"Dude! Are you trying to make me lose my highest score?" I snapped, my voice loud and my expression visibly annoyed.
He glanced at my screen and laughed it off. "Isn't she a cutie, though?" he asked, nudging my arm with a teasing glint in his eye, referring to Madison. He always tried to set me up, even though he never seemed to like it when I actually dated the girls he recommended.
"Yeah, she is. Just don't get any funny ideas, got it?" I warned, already focusing back on my game. He shrugged, flashing a soft smirk, patted my shoulder, and left for a school club meeting.
The rest of the day crawled by. When the noon bell finally rang, students raced for the exit. I met Willow in the hallway, and we headed toward the gates. That's when we spotted Madison standing outside, sighing as she put her phone away.
Willow grabbed my arm, whispering conspiratorially, "She looks like she needs a hero."
I glanced at Madison, briefly considering it, then dismissed the thought and kept walking. Willow followed, slightly disappointed, until Madison's timid voice called out:
"Um... ex-excuse me."
We stopped and turned as she approached. Her voice was small, almost like a kitten's mew. "I'm truly sorry for disturbing you guys. But would one of you be willing to walk me to the nearest train station? I tried calling my parents, but they couldn't pick me up, and I really don't know my way around."
An excited, triumphant grin split Willow's face. He leaned his arm on my shoulder, having to tiptoe slightly since I was much taller.
"Well, you're just in luck, because my friend here **loves** playing tour guide!" he said optimistically.
"Wait—what!" I turned to him, surprised, but he was already running away in laughter.
"See you later!" he yelled, waving maniacally.
"That conniving bastard," I muttered under my breath, but I turned to Madison and, sighing, agreed to walk her to the station.
The walk was an absolute silence, painfully awkward. I felt a peg of relief when we reached the station. "Well, here we are, LF station," I said, rubbing the back of my neck, avoiding her eyes.
Then, I felt a sudden, soft peck on my cheek. My face instantly burned red to my ears.
"Thank you, Clarence," she said, her smile the warmest I had ever seen. She ran off quickly to buy her ticket. I just stood there, stunned and flustered.
