On March 29th, at 11 PM, the thirteenth episode of the second season of Code Geass aired.
Episodes nine through eleven primarily focused on the Black Knights' exile abroad and the events that transpired there.
In episode twelve, Lelouch returned to Neon, resuming his role as a student at the academy.
The Student Council President, nearing graduation, attempted to set up Lelouch and Shirley.
Through a school-wide game, Shirley and Lelouch's relationship did grow closer. However, at the end of episode twelve, Jeremiah, who had been nicknamed "Orange-kun," undergone human modification, and stubbornly prevented Lelouch from saving Nunnally in the final episode of the first season, returned to Neon after obtaining a Geass from V.V. that could nullify other Geass powers.
Ordered to eradicate Geass power region by region, Jeremiah happened to pass through an area where Shirley was. The Geass Lelouch had previously placed on her was nullified, restoring the memories she had lost.
The episode ended on a cliffhanger.
Episode thirteen depicted Shirley's reaction after regaining her memories. She didn't reveal Lelouch's identity as Zero, but she was deeply shaken and terrified, feeling as though everyone around her was wearing a false mask.
Shirley couldn't understand Lelouch's situation. She couldn't figure out why Nunnally had become the Governor of the Eleventh District, nor why Villetta, who once wanted to capture Lelouch, was now a teacher at the school.
To resolve her doubts, she called Suzaku out, hoping to ask him about the matter. However, the moment they met, they ran into Lelouch.
At first, Shirley suspected Suzaku might be working with Lelouch, but after observing some details, she realized that wasn't the case.
Lelouch was fighting alone.
Lelouch had erased some of her memories in the past, but during her amnesia, she had fallen in love with him again. Now, she no longer harbored any hatred towards him.
Upon realizing Lelouch was alone, she began considering how she could help him.
Meanwhile, Jeremiah stormed into the school, determined to find Lelouch.
Rolo and the others intervened one after another, but his Geass was ineffective against Jeremiah. Moreover, his cybernetically enhanced body was almost impervious to harm, making him impossible to defeat.
Seeing the situation growing dire, Villetta revealed Lelouch's location to Jeremiah.
After Jeremiah left, Villetta immediately had someone notify Lelouch while sending Rolo to assist him.
When Lelouch received the message, he found himself in an awkward position with Shirley and Suzaku by his side.
Fortunately, Shirley quickly understood the situation and took the initiative to lead Suzaku away.
Lelouch didn't think much of it, believing that with Suzaku present, Shirley's safety would be assured.
After shaking off Shirley and Suzaku, he went to confront Jeremiah. Before long, a considerable commotion erupted.
Hearing the commotion from outside, Suzaku assumed it was just a routine terrorist attack. However, instead of staying with Shirley, he took charge of security and related matters as a Knight of the Round Table, while also assigning two guards to protect her.
Shirley tried calling Lelouch, but her call went unanswered.
"Wait for me, Lulu," she declared, "I won't let you face this alone," before charging into the station building.
Jeremiah was formidable, but Lelouch's meticulously planned and carefully designed strategy gave him no fear.
Then, an unexpected turn of events unfolded: Jeremiah wasn't here to kill Lelouch at all!
His true allegiance had never been to the Britannian Emperor, but to Lelouch's mother, Empress Marianne.
When Empress Marianne was assassinated, Jeremiah had been present as her bodyguard.
He carried deep guilt for failing to protect her.
Upon learning that Lelouch was Zero and that his actions were driven by revenge, Jeremiah began to serve him.
Meanwhile, Shirley, who had rushed into the station building, encountered Rolo.
Shirley confessed her love for Lelouch and begged Rolo to let her join his side so she could protect him, help him reclaim happiness, and rescue his sister, Nunnally.
Unbeknownst to her, Nunnally's existence was a thorn in Rolo's heart.
Enraged, Rolo unleashed his Geass.
When Lelouch arrived after resolving the crisis, Rolo was gone, and Shirley lay bleeding, clinging to her last breath.
Startled, he rushed to her side.
Shirley slowly opened her eyes and weakly whispered, "Lulu... I'm so glad I got to speak with you one last time."
"It's not the last time! I'll get a doctor right now, so..." Lelouch stammered, fumbling for his phone, but Shirley stopped him.
"When I regained my memories, I was so scared. The fake teacher, my friends who lost their memories, everyone lying... I felt like the whole world was watching me. Lulu was fighting alone in this world, all by himself. So I thought, only I could give Lulu something real..."
"Shirley."
"I love Lulu. Even though I know you dragged my father into this, I can't bring myself to hate you. And even though Lulu made me forget everything that happened, I fell in love with him again. Even with my memories twisted, I still ended up loving you."
As Shirley spoke, her voice grew increasingly faint.
Lelouch panicked. "Shirley, don't die!" he shouted, simultaneously using his King's Power to command her not to die.
The King's Power could only be used once on the same person. However, the Geass that had been cast upon Shirley had been nullified by Jeremiah, so it should have been usable again.
Yet even the King's Power, which could compel obedience, couldn't save someone who was dying.
Shirley continued, "No matter how many times I'm reincarnated, I'll still fall in love with Lulu. That's destiny, I guess."
"Don't die! Shirley, don't die! Don't die!" Lelouch cried, tears streaming down his face.
"So... it's okay, right, Lulu? Even if I'm reincarnated, I'll still love you... love you... so many times... so many times..."
As she finished speaking, Shirley slowly closed her eyes, and her hand, which had been clutching Lelouch's, slipped limply from his grasp.
Lelouch was stunned. He called out Shirley's name several times before his voice cracked into a heart-wrenching scream.
Since the end of episode 12, when Shirley regained her memories, many viewers had sensed that a tragedy was imminent. In episode 13, when Shirley rushed into the train station to help Lelouch, it seemed to confirm her impending doom.
But what no one could have predicted was that Shirley wouldn't die at Jeremiah's hands, but at Rolo's.
That wasn't the worst part. The true outrage came in episode 14, which aired on April 5th.
While Lelouch was still grieving Shirley's death, Rolo approached him.
"That was close, Brother. Shirley had regained her memories and was chasing you with a gun."
"Is that so? You... you were the one who..."
"Yes, Brother. Your enemies must be eliminated by me."
"Rolo."
"What is it, Brother?"
"Well done. Without you, my secret would have been exposed."
"Because this isn't just your secret anymore, Brother."
Rolo's smug grin and self-congratulatory demeanor disgusted many viewers.
Lelouch wanted to kill Rolo on the spot, but he knew that the root of Shirley's death lay in the power of Geass. So, he feigned praise for Rolo before immediately proposing to eliminate the Geass Order.
With Rolo and Jeremiah's assistance, the Geass Order's location was quickly pinpointed, and Lelouch led his forces to capture them all in one fell swoop.
However, Lelouch had originally planned for Rolo to die alongside V.V., the Geass Order's leader, in a mutual kill. But Cornelia's sudden intervention foiled this plan.
While the annihilation of the Geass Order was a satisfying spectacle for viewers, the fact that Shirley died in episode 13 while Rolo survived in episode 14 left many viewers deeply dissatisfied.
The internet buzzed with outrage over two consecutive episodes.
Countless viewers vented their fury, with many demanding, "Rolo must die!"
