Chapter 14 - Chapter 14 – The Test

The next three days passed without incident.

That, more than anything, unsettled Lin Xuan.

No strange presences at night.

No unusual fluctuations of qi.

No warnings disguised as advice.

It was as if the sect had returned to normal.

But Lin Xuan understood something now.

Silence was not safety.

It was observation.

On the fourth morning, a bronze bell rang from the central plaza.

Not the routine training bell.

This one was deeper.

Formal.

All outer disciples gathered quickly, forming lines before the stone platform.

An inner sect elder stood above them, hands clasped behind his back.

"The sect will conduct a minor evaluation," the elder announced calmly. "A field assignment. Outer disciples may volunteer. Rewards will include contribution points and cultivation resources."

A murmur spread through the crowd.

Field missions meant opportunity.

And danger.

Lin Xuan did not step forward.

Not immediately.

He watched.

Several ambitious disciples volunteered first—eager, confident, hungry for advancement.

Then—

The elder's gaze swept across the formation.

And stopped.

On him.

"You," the elder said.

Lin Xuan stepped out calmly.

"Yes, Elder."

"You have shown stable progress recently. You will join the mission."

It was not a request.

Lin Xuan bowed. "This disciple obeys."

Inside, his thoughts sharpened.

So this was the move.

Not elimination in secret.

But evaluation under controlled risk.

If he died during a mission, it would be natural.

Unfortunate.

Explainable.

The assignment was simple on paper.

A nearby mountain valley had shown irregular spiritual fluctuations. The sect suspected rogue cultivators or wandering beasts.

The team: five outer disciples. One inner sect supervisor.

Balanced.

Reasonable.

Controlled.

Too controlled.

By dusk, they departed.

The inner sect supervisor, Senior Brother Qiu, walked at the front. His cultivation was at least two realms above them—steady, silent, authoritative.

Lin Xuan remained near the rear of the formation.

Watching.

Listening.

The valley was two hours from the sect. As they approached, the air grew denser with wild spiritual energy.

Unstable.

Untamed.

Perfect terrain for an accident.

They entered the valley at twilight.

Birds scattered.

The wind shifted direction abruptly.

Senior Brother Qiu raised a hand. "Spread out. Maintain visual range."

The formation loosened.

Not dangerously.

But enough.

Lin Xuan adjusted his position deliberately—close enough to one disciple to avoid isolation, far enough not to seem defensive.

Minutes passed.

Nothing.

Then—

A roar split the air.

A spiritual beast burst from the tree line—a Shadow Fang Wolf, its fur streaked with dark qi.

Level equivalent to mid outer disciple stage.

Manageable.

But only with coordination.

"Form up!" one disciple shouted.

They engaged.

Lin Xuan joined naturally, striking at the wolf's flank while another distracted it from the front.

The fight was real.

The danger genuine.

Claws slashed.

Qi collided.

But as the wolf staggered—

Another fluctuation erupted behind them.

A second wolf.

Stronger.

And this one lunged directly—

At Lin Xuan.

Too direct.

Too precise.

His pupils contracted.

This wasn't random targeting.

The beast ignored the others entirely.

Lin Xuan pivoted sharply, barely avoiding the bite. The wolf's claws grazed his sleeve, shredding fabric but missing flesh by inches.

He countered with a controlled strike—not overly powerful, not weak.

Balanced.

But the second wolf pressed relentlessly.

Almost as if—

It had been driven.

A faint spiritual thread flickered at the edge of his perception.

Control.

Someone was guiding it.

Lin Xuan's mind raced.

If he exposed that fact, he would reveal the extent of his perception.

If he ignored it, he might die.

The wolf lunged again.

This time, Lin Xuan allowed himself to stumble.

Just slightly.

Creating an opening.

The beast committed fully—

And in that instant, Lin Xuan released a sharper burst of qi than he had shown before.

Precise.

Clean.

He pierced through the wolf's eye.

The body collapsed heavily at his feet.

Silence fell.

The first wolf had already been slain by the others.

Senior Brother Qiu approached slowly.

His gaze lingered on the corpse.

Then on Lin Xuan.

"That was decisive," Qiu said.

Lin Xuan lowered his head. "The beast overextended."

A simple explanation.

Plausible.

Qiu studied him for two breaths too long.

Then nodded.

"We will report this as an unexpected dual encounter."

Report.

Meaning someone would read it.

Analyze it.

Judge whether Lin Xuan had performed within expected parameters.

Or exceeded them.

As they exited the valley later that night, Lin Xuan felt it clearly.

The atmosphere had changed.

Not hostility.

Not approval.

Adjustment.

He had passed something.

Not fully.

But enough.

The hunters within the sect were no longer merely observing.

They were testing.

And now—

They knew he was not as simple as he appeared.

The real question was no longer whether he was on their list.

It was—

Had he just moved higher on it?
