Chapter 21 - The Forbidden Rival

The night was heavy and still, the academy shrouded in a pale, misty silence. Students who remained in their quarters were unaware of the danger stalking the halls—a forbidden power user infiltrating the school under a false identity, unseen by all but the most perceptive.

Selene had been practicing in a secluded courtyard, refining her control over her blood ribbons. Her crimson threads hovered around her, weaving and twisting like serpents that obeyed her will, ready to defend or attack at a moment's notice.

Cael observed quietly from the shadows, his faint crimson pulse a tether of guidance.

Tonight, he thought, is her first real test against a hidden opponent who does not announce themselves. If she survives this… she begins to understand what mastery truly means.

A soft ripple through the mist alerted Selene first. The intruder's presence was subtle—life energy manipulated to avoid detection, but the rhythm of blood was never entirely masked. Selene's eyes narrowed, her ribbons responding instinctively.

"Teacher… I feel it," she whispered.

"Good," Cael murmured. "Observe… do not strike first. Let them reveal themselves, and then respond."

From the shadowed edge of the courtyard, a figure stepped forward. Cloaked in dark robes that shimmered faintly with suppressed mana, the rival's aura flickered—hidden, yet undeniably powerful. The energy radiating from them was irregular, layered, and dangerous.

"I've been waiting for this," the stranger said softly, voice calm yet laced with menace. "I've heard the rumors. Bronze rank, yet capable of feats beyond Silver. And your disciple… she intrigues me."

Selene's blood ribbons flared instinctively, pulsing with her heartbeat. "Who are you? What do you want?"

The stranger smirked. "To test you. To see if the tales are true. And perhaps… to determine if you're worthy of survival."

Without another word, they lunged. Their movements were fluid, nearly invisible in the dim moonlight. They struck with mana-infused blades designed to bypass ordinary defenses and suppress normal life energy manipulation.

Selene reacted instantly. Her ribbons split, weaving in multiple directions, intercepting and redirecting the attacks. Her heart raced, but her focus never wavered. Every movement of her enemy was anticipated, countered, or subtly influenced.

This… is unlike anything we've faced, Selene thought, feeling the subtle push and pull of her ribbons guiding the intruder's momentum.

Cael remained in the shadows, observing, his crimson eyes glowing faintly. He allowed Selene to engage independently, knowing she needed to feel the stress, the fear, and the necessity of control.

Blood obeys those who master it, he reminded her silently. And life yields to those who anticipate it.

The intruder adapted quickly, shifting tactics, using subtle deception and false movements to lure Selene into mistakes. But each time, her ribbons responded, countering with precision, destabilizing their balance without inflicting permanent harm.

Finally, Selene struck—not lethally, but decisively. A single ribbon wrapped around the intruder's wrist, redirecting their attack into the ground harmlessly. The rival stepped back, eyes wide with a mixture of surprise and respect.

"You… control life itself," they admitted. "Not through force, but through understanding. I underestimated you."

Selene exhaled, relief washing over her. "I… survived. Thanks to my teacher."

Cael emerged from the shadows, his crimson aura flaring faintly. "Do not mistake restraint for weakness. The world is far harsher than tonight. Remember this lesson."

Meanwhile, inside the academy's council chambers, factions of instructors whispered furiously. Some advocated expelling Cael immediately, citing danger to the students and the academy's hierarchy. Others argued for observation and careful guidance, curious about the potential of mastering blood in this way.

Political alliances began forming, subtle and calculated, aimed at controlling—or eliminating—the Bronze initiate before his influence could spread further.

Far below, in the abyss, the Demon King's eyes glowed like molten fire.

"Yes," he murmured, voice reverberating across the void. "The disciple awakens. Infiltrators test her. Families stir against him. The Blood Immortal strengthens, his presence rippling through the mortal realm. Soon… the world will remember. Soon… all will bleed."

Back in the courtyard, Selene knelt, adjusting the crimson ribbons hovering faintly above her skin. Her pulse slowed, her mind racing with the lessons learned.

"Teacher," she whispered, "I felt it—the life energy, the flow… even when they tried to hide it. I think I understand… more than I thought I could."

Cael placed a hand lightly on her shoulder. "Understanding is only the first step. Survival is the second. Mastery comes later. Remember: the families will not stop, the academy will conspire, and the shadows will always seek to manipulate. But the blood… obeys the disciplined."

Selene nodded, determination blazing in her eyes. "I'll keep training. I'll master it. And I'll survive."

Cael's crimson gaze swept over the courtyard, detecting the faint disturbances that had gone unnoticed by all others. This is only the beginning.

The first infiltration had been neutralized. But the threads of the Demon King, the Top Ten Families, and the internal political factions of the academy were weaving a storm. And at the center of it all stood the Blood Immortal, ready to reclaim a world that had long forgotten the weight of his name.
