Chapter 21 - CHAPTER 21: THE FINAL TWO

Maxime woke to the smell of incense and the sound of distant prayer.

He sat up slowly, every muscle protesting. Dying—even temporarily—was exhausting in ways he hadn't anticipated.

[HP: 400/400 - RESTORED]

[MANA: 1000/1000 - FULL]

[STATUS: ALIVE (FRAGILE)]

[NOTE: Temporary death has weakened divine constitution. Recovery recommended.]

Nyx was already awake, sitting cross-legged on the floor in meditation. Her Link hummed with renewed strength—no longer the dead void from Helheim, but vibrant and present.

Chang'e stood by the window, watching dawn break over Kolkata.

"Six fragments," she said without turning. "Two remaining. Six days."

The math was brutal. Two fragments in six days should be manageable. But they still didn't know where the final two were.

Maxime pulled up his quest log.

[QUEST: ASCENSION INTERDITE]

[FRAGMENTS: 6/8]

[COLLECTED:]

Fragment 1: Unknown (from Nyx at start)

Fragment 2: Passion Incarnate (Bastet - Egypt)

Fragment 3: Divine Radiance (Freyja - Asgard)

Fragment 4: Emotional Resonance (Aphrodite - Cyprus)

Fragment 5: Timeless Insight (Kali - India)

Fragment 6: Eternal Bonds (Hel - Helheim)

[REMAINING:]

Fragment 7: Location Unknown

Fragment 8: Location Unknown

[TIME UNTIL COUNCIL ARMY: 6 DAYS, 14 HOURS]

[DIPLOMATIC MISSION STATUS: IN PROGRESS (Freyja/Xochiquetzal in Olympus)]

Maxime activated his new Bond Sense, reaching out through the network of connections.

Nyx was right here—bright and clear through their Primordial Link.

Chang'e was present, though not formally bonded.

Freyja was distant but detectable—in Olympus, her emotional state tense with negotiation.

And beyond them... faint echoes. Fragments calling to fragments.

Two pulses. One to the east. One to the south.

"I can feel them," Maxime said. "The last two fragments. They're..."

He concentrated, trying to pinpoint the locations.

"One is in Japan. The other is in Egypt."

Chang'e turned, eyes widening.

"You can sense them directly?"

"The Bond Sense. It extends to the fragments themselves—they're parts of me, technically. I can feel where they're trying to reunite."

"Japan and Egypt," Nyx said, opening her eyes. "That narrows it down. Which do we pursue first?"

Maxime activated Temporal Sight.

[MANA: 900/1000]

The futures branched:

JAPAN FIRST:

65% chance: Successful fragment retrieval

40% chance: Amaterasu (Sun Goddess, Level 45) interferes

30% chance: Council forces intercept

Timeline: 2 days to locate, 1 day to retrieve

EGYPT FIRST:

55% chance: Successful fragment retrieval

50% chance: Ra (Sun God, Level 47) opposes

45% chance: Freyja's diplomatic mission complications

Timeline: 1 day to locate, 2 days to retrieve

Both had risks. Both had similar timeframes.

But Egypt had a complication—Freyja was conducting diplomacy through Sekhmet, an Egyptian goddess. Going to Egypt might interfere with those negotiations.

"Japan," Maxime decided. "We go to Japan first. Get the seventh fragment. Then Egypt for the eighth."

"Japanese pantheon is isolationist," Chang'e warned. "They rarely interact with foreign gods. And Amaterasu is... formidable. Level 45, possibly higher in her own domain."

"So was Hel. We managed."

"We barely managed. And you gave up trying to take the fragment by force."

"Which worked."

Nyx stood, stretching.

"Maxime's right. We're on a clock. Japan first, Egypt second. No time for elaborate planning."

She moved to him, placing a hand on his chest where the fragments pulsed.

"Six fragments. You're Level 28 now. Divinity at 84%. Two more and you'll be..."

She trailed off.

"Complete," Maxime finished. "Level 35-40, probably. Divinity close to 100%. Full Eros Primordial restored."

Through their Link, he felt her fear—the same fear from the visions. That Maxime would cease to exist, replaced entirely by the god.

"I won't disappear," he said softly. "I promise."

"You can't promise that. Kali said—"

"Kali said transformation is inevitable. Not that I have no choice in what form it takes."** He took her hands. "I'm choosing to remember. To hold onto Maxime. To not become the monster."

"And if the fragments override that choice?"

"Then you have my permission to stop me. Like you promised."

Through the Link, she felt his sincerity. His acceptance that she might have to kill him to prevent him from becoming the tyrant.

She pulled him into a fierce embrace.

"I hate this."

"I know."

"I hate that we have to rush. That we can't take time to prepare properly. That every fragment is a gamble."

"I know."

"And I hate that I'm falling deeper in love with you while watching you disappear piece by piece."

Maxime held her tighter.

"I'm not gone yet. And I'm fighting to stay."

They stood like that for a long moment, drawing strength from each other.

Finally, Chang'e cleared her throat.

"Japan. We should move. The longer we wait, the more likely the Council tracks us."

Maxime nodded, releasing Nyx reluctantly.

"How do we get to Japan?"

"Portal. But it'll take preparation. The Japanese divine realm is heavily warded. I'll need an hour to calculate the breach point."

"Do it."

Chang'e began drawing symbols on the floor, her pipa humming as she worked.

Maxime took the opportunity to check on Freyja through their loose connection.

Freyja. Status?

A pause. Then her voice, strained.

Negotiations are... difficult. Zeus is paranoid. Sees threats everywhere. But Sekhmet is skilled. We have a meeting scheduled for tomorrow at dawn.

Can you delay?

Why?

We're going to Japan. Then Egypt. If we succeed, I'll have all eight fragments before your meeting concludes.

Another pause.

That changes everything. If you're complete, Zeus won't negotiate. He'll see it as confirmation of his fears.

Then we use that. Attend the meeting. Tell Zeus I'm complete. That I'm coming. Force him to choose—fight a complete Eros or broker peace.

Through the connection, he felt Freyja's surprise.

That's... incredibly risky. And bold.

We're past safe options. This is endgame.

...Understood. I'll prepare accordingly. Don't die in Japan.

No promises.

The connection faded.

Maxime turned to find Nyx watching him.

"Bold plan," she said dryly. "Announce you're complete and coming. That'll definitely make Zeus less paranoid."

"It'll force his hand. Make him reveal his true intentions. If he's willing to negotiate, he'll do it then. If not, we fight."

"Either way, we know where we stand."

"Exactly."

Chang'e stood, the portal symbols glowing softly.

"Ready. This will take us to the outskirts of Kyoto. From there, we'll need to locate the fragment holder."

"Who do you think has it?" Maxime asked.

"Based on the fragment's nature—six focused on connection and desire—the seventh is likely held by someone representing a different aspect of Eros." Chang'e considered. "Probably Amaterasu. She's the sun goddess, representing illumination and truth. The opposite of Eros's shadow nature."

"Or it could be Tsukuyomi," Nyx suggested. "Moon god. Represents hidden desire, things concealed in darkness."

"Or Susanoo," Chang'e added. "Storm god. Represents chaos and disruption, which Eros certainly brought."

Maxime activated Temporal Sight briefly.

[MANA: 800/1000]

The futures showed fragments—Amaterasu appeared in 60% of them, Tsukuyomi in 30%, Susanoo in 10%.

"Amaterasu. Most likely."

"Then we go to her shrine. The Grand Shrine of Ise. Most sacred site in Japan."

"Of course it's the most sacred site," Maxime muttered. "Why would anything be easy?"

Nyx smiled despite the tension.

"Where's the fun in easy?"

They stepped through the portal.

Japan hit differently than India.

Where India was overwhelming presence, Japan was subtle power. The divine energy here was woven into the landscape itself—every mountain, every river, every ancient tree hummed with kami.

They materialized in a forest outside Kyoto, and immediately Maxime felt watched.

Not hostile. Just... observed. As if the land itself was noting their presence.

"The kami are aware of us," Chang'e said quietly. "Foreign gods stand out here. We should move quickly before the major deities investigate."

They traveled east, toward Ise, using a combination of shadow travel and mundane transit. The bullet train was surreal—Maxime sitting among mortals who had no idea three gods rode with them.

His Aura of Fascination drew attention, but Nyx had taught him to dampen it somewhat. People noticed him, but didn't obsess.

As they approached Ise, the divine presence intensified.

The Grand Shrine sat in a forest of cryptomeria trees, its architecture simple but perfect. White gravel. Wooden buildings. Nothing ostentatious.

But the power radiating from it was immense.

[GRAND SHRINE OF ISE]

[DIVINE PRESENCE: AMATERASU — LEVEL 45]

[ADDITIONAL PRESENCE DETECTED: TSUKUYOMI — LEVEL 42]

[STATUS: BOTH AWARE OF YOUR ARRIVAL]

"They know we're here," Maxime said.

"Of course they do," a new voice replied.

A woman materialized before them—radiant in a way that hurt to look at directly. She wore traditional shrine maiden robes, but her presence was solar. Literal sunlight seemed to emanate from her skin.

[AMATERASU — LEVEL 45]

[GODDESS OF THE SUN, UNIVERSE, AND ORDER (SHINTO)]

[CHARISMA: 118]

[STATUS: NEUTRAL/CAUTIOUS]

Beside her appeared a man—quieter, cooler, with eyes like silver moons.

[TSUKUYOMI — LEVEL 42]

[GOD OF THE MOON AND TIME (SHINTO)]

[CHARISMA: 104]

[STATUS: CURIOUS]

"Foreign gods in Ise," Amaterasu's voice was warm but firm. "Seeking something, I presume?"

No point in lying. They clearly knew.

"A fragment. One of eight that belong to Eros Primordial. I believe one of you holds it."

Amaterasu and Tsukuyomi exchanged glances.

"The fragment of Primal Truth," Tsukuyomi said. "Yes. We've held it in trust for three millennia. Waiting for Eros to reclaim it."

"Or for someone worthy of reclaiming it," Amaterasu added.

"I need it," Maxime said simply. "To become complete. To face the Council's army in six days."

"We're aware of the Council's mobilization," Amaterasu replied. "Zeus has been... vocal... about the threat you pose."

"Do you believe him?" Maxime asked. "That I'm a threat?"

Amaterasu studied him with eyes that saw through flesh to soul.

"You carry six fragments. Your divinity is 84%. You're powerful, growing stronger, and surrounded by formidable allies." She gestured at Nyx and Chang'e. "Objectively, you are a threat. The question is whether you're a threat to us."

"I'm not. Japan isn't part of Zeus's Council. Your pantheon has remained independent. I have no reason to threaten that."

"And yet," Tsukuyomi interjected, "power corrupts. Eros was benevolent once. Then he became arrogant. Then tyrannical. What makes you different?"

The question hung in the air.

Maxime could use Emotional Influence. Could try to sway them with his Charisma. Could activate Temporal Sight to find the optimal answer.

But something Hel had said echoed in his mind: Be better than him.

"I don't know if I'm different," he admitted. "I'm terrified I'll become exactly what Zeus fears. That Maxime will disappear and only Eros will remain."

Through the Link, he felt Nyx's surprise at his raw honesty.

"But I'm trying. Every fragment, I remember who I was. I hold onto the mortal who died scared and alone. I choose to see my allies as people, not tools."

He met Amaterasu's blazing gaze.

"I can't promise I won't fail. Can't promise the fragments won't corrupt me. But I'm choosing to fight for the version of me that builds instead of breaks. That liberates instead of enslaves."

Silence.

Then Amaterasu smiled—warm and genuine.

"Truth. Finally, a god who speaks truth instead of pretty lies."

She gestured, and a crystal appeared—pulsing with golden light.

"The fragment of Primal Truth. It grants the ability to perceive and speak absolute truth, to see through deception, to make truth manifest."

She offered it to him.

"Eros used it to seduce—to know exactly what people wanted to hear and then say it perfectly. But you..."

Her smile widened.

"You'll use it to be honest. Won't you?"

Maxime took the fragment carefully.

"I'll try."

"That's all we ask."

The integration was immediate and intense.

Not painful. But revealing.

Every lie he'd ever told himself—every self-deception, every rationalization—stripped away. He saw himself with perfect clarity.

The parts that were still Maxime. The parts that were becoming Eros. The fear. The determination. The love for Nyx. The ambition. The doubt.

All of it. Naked truth.

Maxime gasped, the truth of his existence settling into place.

He was Maxime. He was Eros. He was both. He was neither. He was becoming something new.

And that was okay.

"Thank you," he said, meaning it absolutely.

Amaterasu inclined her head.

"May you use it wisely. And may you survive what comes next."

Tsukuyomi added quietly:

"When you face Zeus, remember—the most powerful truth is often the simplest."

Maxime nodded, understanding.

They departed Ise, leaving the shrine and its guardians behind.

One fragment remained.

Egypt.

And the clock was ticking.

[TIME UNTIL COUNCIL ARMY: 5 DAYS, 18 HOURS]

[FRAGMENTS: 7/8]

[FINAL FRAGMENT LOCATION: EGYPT - HOLDER UNKNOWN]

As they traveled, Maxime activated Truth Sight instinctively.

And saw the truth of their situation with perfect clarity:

They were running out of time.

Freyja's diplomacy would fail—Zeus was too paranoid.

The eighth fragment would be guarded by someone formidable.

And even complete, even at 100% divinity, the odds of surviving the Council army were less than 10%.

But they would fight anyway.

Because the alternative—surrender, weakness, loss of self—was worse than death.

Maxime looked at Nyx through the Link, seeing her truth.

She loved him. Completely. Would follow him to oblivion.

And she was terrified she'd lose him before the end.

He sent back his own truth through the Link:

Whatever happens, whatever I become, I choose you. Always.

Through Truth Sight, he saw her relief. Her hope. Her love reflected back at him with crystalline clarity.

They traveled toward Egypt.

Toward the eighth fragment.

Toward completion.

Toward war.
