Chapter 1 - The Project

"Wake—up!"

I felt a sharp pain in my stomach which forced me to wake up.

"What the hell was that?" I yelled

I had woken up with my twin sister's fist plunged into my gut.

"Good, you're finally awake." She said with a smirk.

"What the heck was that Nanakou?" I asked.

"Well, I was yelling for you to wake up but you weren't so I went with the next logical option." She answered.

"Punching me was the logical option?!"

She frowned. "You're awake aren't you? That means it worked."

I looked around. We were in a rather small empty room with two beds. The door was that of a cell.

"Where the heck are we?" I asked Nanakou.

She looked at me cluelessly. "How the heck am I supposed to know that? I'm trapped in here same as you."

"I could've just said you didn't know." I muttered.

Nanakou shot me a dirty look. "You know I can still hear you right. Do you remember what happened before we got here though?"

I closed my eyes to try and remember. "Yes I do. We both got into an argument at the park that escalated quickly to us using our abilities. My mind's kinda blank after that."

Nanakou turned her gaze to her feet in disappointment. "Same here."

Just then, we heard footsteps heading towards our room.

The cell doors opened a woman with a mean look plastered on her face entered. She had black long hair and was in a coat. She was the same height as me.

"Come with me and don't say a word or ask questions."

"Hey, we deserve to know where we are. Can't you at least tell us that much?" Nanakou asked.

The woman straight up ignored her and said. " Come along now."

We had no option but to follow her.

After walking through a long hallway, we arrived in an area that looked like a high school interior.

I could see a few teens walking around.

Before I could take note of anything else, we arrived at a black door with a golden plate on it with the words, principal engraved in it."

We followed the woman into the office and standing before the window was a tall man with red hair with yellow streaks.

He smiled at us when we entered. "Welcome you two. Sorry for the rude treatment she gave you."

Something about him just pisses me off.

"Something about him is pissing me off." Nanakou muttered loud enough for me to hear.

She was thinking the same thing as me.

"Where are we?" I asked.

"Don't answer them sir. As government officials, we must not tell them till they're ready to know." The woman warned the principal.

"You're at a top secret government project facility." He answered without a second thought.

I looked at the woman and found her with eyes wide."...sir"

Guess she wasn't expecting him to say it after her warning.

The man continued to speak. "For about five decades now, this secret project has been going on. We discovered some people with artistic talent can make their works come to life. The government held a conference to decide whether to expose of the ability wielders. At the end of the conference, they found it stupid to expose of people with this abilities and decided to use them as a secret form of law enforcement."

I guess mom knew about this. She always told me and Nanakou to to keep our abilities hidden.

I could tell Nanakou was thinking the same thing right now.

He continued to elaborate further. "The government appointed officials to find cnd capture people those abilities. Hence the project started. Just as the project was making headway 2 decades ago, we discovered a cult of artists welding abilities killing non wielders."

Two decades ago?

He continued "They painted on walls we with blood the words 'Only artists deserve life.' from that, we could tell their aim was to kill all non artists around the world starting with out country Japan. Within that same year, we found out that a secret faction formed by government agents was planning to kill ability wielders. We are still to know the name of the faction or it's members."

"Why the heck are you telling us all these?" Asked. Nanakou.

"Just thought you should know. After all you're joining us aren't you?" He said with an unsettling smile.

"Who said we were joining you?!" I yelled.

"Yeah, don't think knowing all of this will change our mind." Nanakou added.

"Minoru and Nanakou Onigashi. Born to a single mother who was a government agent under the project. She died when you two were 13 leading to your nameless and faceless uncle sending you money for upkeep." He added.

"How do you know that much about us?" Yelled Nanakou.

The man smiled. "We make it a point to watch all our agent's families which includes you. But I admit, you had us fooled for such a log time. It must be with your mother's help but you were bound to slip up and you did leading to us discovering you abilities. You two can create any weapon of your choice is that not it."

How did he find out the specifics of our abilities?

"We're still not joining you." Nanakou responded.

He gave a devious smile. "Okay. But we might know something about your mother though. She may or may not be dead."

Wait... What. I always refused to accept mother's death and now she might be alive.

"What do you know about it?" I asked.

" That's all I can tell you, after all you aren't part of the project." He answered.

Nanakou and I exchanged looks.

"If it means finding mom, we'll join you!" We both yelled at the same time.

" Well then, You mother went missing after she tried to infiltrate the cult and she never returned so we branded dead but I believe she might still be alive."

"We have decided to join you and we will do so but just to find our mother." I said.

He smiled. "You have no idea how happy that makes me. Then again you would have been killed if you refused."

This guy is pure evil. He knew we had no option but to join so he disclosed all that information to us knowing we would join and even used information about our mother to trap us.

Yeah... He really pisses me off.

"Take them to the instrumentalist." He told the woman.

"Yes sir. Follow me" she told us.

As we were heading out the door he said with his usual unsettling smile. "Oh and welcome to... The Canvas Project."

The woman turned sharply."Don't stray from me when we enter the instrumentalist's workshop… unless you want to die."
