Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: The Man No One Has Seen

Gracie didn't sleep at all that night.

Her father's voice echoed in her mind, calm but firm.

"Tomorrow. Noon. We need to talk."

She sat on the edge of the bed as dawn broke, her heart heavy with dread. Every path ahead of her felt dangerous. If she met him, old wounds would reopen. If she refused, he might drag her grandmother further into this mess.

From the small living room came the sound of movement.

Derick was already awake.

She stepped out quietly.

He stood near the window, phone in hand, his expression unreadable. For a brief moment, she saw something different in him—sharp, commanding—before it vanished the second he turned to to her.

"You're up early," he said gently.

"I didn't sleep," she admitted. "My father wants to meet me today."

Derick nodded once, as if he had already expected it.

"At Blackcrest?" he asked.

"Yes," she said softly. "He said noon."

Silence stretched between them.

"That's not a coincidence," Derick finally said.

She frowned. "What do you mean?"

He chose his words carefully. "Blackcrest and Phoenix Enterprise have been circling each other for years. Your father wouldn't step into this territory without a reason."

She hesitated. "People say Blackcrest is Phoenix's biggest rival."

"That's true," Derick replied calmly.

"And… they also say no one has ever seen Blackcrest's owner," she added, studying him. "Is that true?"

His breath slowed.

"Yes," he said simply. "He values privacy."

She nodded. "I heard only a few trusted people even know who he is."

Derick met her gaze. "Power attracts enemies. Staying unseen keeps people alive."

She shivered, not knowing why his words felt personal. For a moment, she wanted to reach for him, to anchor herself, but held back.

At Phoenix Enterprise, Gracie's father stood in front of the massive glass window, eyes cold.

"Blackcrest has been interfering with our deals again," he said.

His assistant nodded. "They're aggressive. Strategic. Always one step ahead."

"And yet," he murmured, "no one knows who leads them."

A pause.

"Today," he continued, "I meet my daughter. And somehow… she works under Blackcrest's protection."

His eyes narrowed. "Find out why."

By late morning, the atmosphere inside Blackcrest Corporation hadd changed.

Security was tighter. Executives whispered behind closed doors. Gracie noticed it immediately.

A colleague leaned over and whispered, "Did you hear? Phoenix Enterprise requested a formal visit."

Her heart dropped.

She stood slowly, feeling the weight of everything—the past, her father, the secrets she didn't yet understand.

At exactly noon, a sleek black car pulled up in front of Blackcrest.

Her father stepped out. The building went silent.

Inside a private elevator, Derick stood with two men—both dressed sharply, eyes filled with respect.

"Sir," one of them said quietly, "Phoenix Enterprise has arrived."

Derick adjusted his cuffs slowly.

"Keep the owner unseen," he said calmly.

"Yes, sir."

The elevator doors opened.

Derick walked out—but not toward the boardroom.

Instead, he turned down a side corridor, removed his jacket, and slipped back into the role the world believed. Invisible.

Even then, his eyes flicked toward Gracie's path, watching. Protecting. Always ready.

In the conference room, Gracie sat stiffly across from her father.

He studied her carefully, as if trying to memorize her face.

"You've grown," he said.

She didn't reply.

"You left without a word," he continued. "Do you know what that did to me?"

She laughed softly—without humor. "Do you know what your absence did to me?"

Silence.

"I heard Avery rejected you," he said tightly. "She overstepped."

Gracie's eyes widened slightly.

"I've corrected her," he added. "You should never have been treated that way."

A thousand emotions crashed inside her chest.

"Then why now?" she asked quietly. "Why look for me now?"

His jaw tightened. "Because I won't lose you again."

She noticed a flicker of something—pain, regret, maybe longing—in his eyes. She felt herself soften, just a little, before pulling back.

Outside the room, unseen, Derick stood still.

Listening.

Always watching.

Meanwhile, Avery sat in her office, fingers tapping against her desk.

"Blackcrest allowed the meeting," her assistant said.

"Of course they did," Avery replied coldly. "They want to watch."

She stood.

"I want eyes on every corner of that building. Especially on him."

"The furniture shop worker?" the assistant asked.

Avery smiled slowly. "Yes. He's too close. And no one stays that close to a mystery without being part of it."

The meeting ended without shouting.

Without closure.

Gracie walked out feeling hollow.

Her father watched her leave, pain flickering in his eyes.

Outside the building, Derick waited near the street, dressed simply, hands in his pockets.

"You okay?" he asked softly.

She nodded weakly. "He wants me back."

Derick's eyes darkened. "And what do you want?"

She looked at him, really looked at him.

"I want peace," she said. "And I want to protect my grandmother."

"You will," he said firmly.

She exhaled shakily. "Sometimes I feel like Blackcrest is… shielding me."

Derick smiled faintly.

"Maybe it is."

Her hand brushed against his as she walked past him. It was a fleeting touch, but it sent a shiver up her spine.

"And your friend," she added, "whoever he is… tell him thank you."

Derick held her gaze. "I will," he said, a faint warmth in his voice she hadn't noticed before.

That night, Avery received a message.

The furniture shop worker met Gracie again.

Her smile vanished.

"Run his background again," she ordered. "Dig deeper. I want cracks."

Across the city, Gracie's grandmother sat by her window, unease gripping her heart.

And in a dark office high above the streets, Derick stood alone, city lights reflecting in his eyes.

"They're getting closer," a voice said over the phone.

Derick's expression was calm—but dangerous.

"Good," he replied. "Let them come."

Because when the man no one had ever seen finally stepped into the light—

The city would never be the same.
