Chapter 29 - almost

The Watson mansion was quiet, bathed in the soft golden glow of the evening lights. Jay was tidying up after their ice cream outing, still sticky in some places and trying not to laugh at how ridiculous Keifer had been teasing her all afternoon.

"You're impossible," she muttered, brushing chocolate off her arm.

"And yet," Keifer replied smoothly, leaning casually against the counter, "you keep smiling. That makes you… adorable."

Jay groaned, cheeks heating. "I am not flustered."

"No?" His voice dropped slightly, low and deliberate, and he stepped closer, the space between them shrinking. "Then why are you avoiding my gaze?"

Jay tried to look away, but it was useless. Keifer's presence filled the room, magnetic and impossible to ignore. Every inch of him radiated that calm, dangerous energy that made her pulse race.

"Keifer…" she whispered, barely audible.

"Yes?" His voice was just above a murmur, close enough that she could feel his breath on her cheek.

"Stop teasing me," she murmured, trying to keep her composure.

"I'm not teasing," he said, leaning in just slightly, "I'm… reminding you how dangerously irresistible you are, Jay."

Her hand brushed his chest, almost accidentally, and she felt a jolt run through both of them. He stiffened slightly but didn't pull away.

"You're… dangerous," she breathed.

"And yet," he murmured, eyes darkening, "you keep standing here."

The distance between them shrank almost imperceptibly. Jay could feel his heartbeat, steady and strong, just inches from hers. She swallowed hard, trying to focus on something—anything—other than the tension pulling them together.

"Keifer…" she whispered again, voice trembling slightly.

He cupped her face gently with one hand, thumb brushing her cheek. The touch was electrifying, deliberate, and intimate. Jay's breath caught in her throat.

"You feel that?" he murmured. "This… tension… it's been simmering for far too long."

Jay's lips parted instinctively. She wanted to say something, to warn him, to push him away—but the words caught in her throat.

Keifer leaned closer, forehead nearly touching hers. "One more step…" he said, voice low and teasing, "…and I might not be able to stop myself."

Her pulse hammered violently. "And…?" she breathed, daring him, heart racing.

His eyes flicked to her lips, then back to her eyes. "And…" he murmured, "…I might just kiss you."

Jay's chest fluttered uncontrollably. She could feel the warmth radiating from him, the almost-imperceptible brush of his lips against hers, the tension between them stretching tight like a wire.

She reached up, letting her fingers graze his jaw, feeling the slight stubble. "Keifer…" she whispered, half exasperated, half breathless.

He tilted his head slightly, dangerously close. "Jay… you're mine. Do you know what that means?"

Jay's cheeks flamed. "I… I think so," she whispered, barely audible.

"Good," he murmured, lips so close she could feel his warmth. "Because controlling myself around you? I can't promise I'll manage it much longer."

Her knees nearly went weak. She could feel it—every brush, every heartbeat, every small touch building a storm neither of them could resist. But neither moved fully, hovering on the edge, hearts racing, the world around them melting away.

Then, just as the tension reached its peak, Keifer pulled back slightly, voice low but still teasing. "Not tonight," he murmured, smirk returning, though his eyes still burned with desire. "But remember… this is far from over."

Jay exhaled shakily, cheeks flaming, lips parted, heart pounding. "You're impossible," she whispered.

"And yet," he said smoothly, brushing a stray lock of hair from her face, "you love it."

Jay could only manage a breathless laugh. The tension lingered in the room like electricity—unspoken, intoxicating, and absolutely undeniable.
