Chapter 16 - The Day She Lost Control

Arjun woke up to thirty-two notifications.

He didn't jump out of bed. He didn't rush to open anything.

He lay there for five seconds, staring at the ceiling, then picked up his phone.

WhatsApp groups. Instagram mentions. Missed calls.

Sameer: Call me ASAP.

Neha: It's everywhere.

Aditya: You need to see this.

Arjun opened Instagram first.

The rooftop video was trending locally.

Someone had uploaded the full live recording before it was deleted. Not just the dramatic line Riya said—but everything that followed. Her standing too close to the edge. Arjun calmly asking her to step back. Him calling security. The guards arriving.

Comments had shifted overnight.

He didn't threaten her.

Why was she recording?

This looks staged.

She said he pushed her. He didn't even touch her.

Arjun didn't smile.

He just absorbed it.

The tide had changed.

At 8:17 a.m., his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered immediately.

The same sub-inspector from last night.

"Mr. Arjun," the officer said. "You need to come in again."

"Now?" Arjun asked.

"Yes."

"Understood," Arjun replied.

No panic.

No argument.

He got dressed, packed his folder again, and left.

The police station looked different this time.

More serious.

The officer didn't make him wait.

Inside the room, Riya was already there.

She wasn't crying.

She wasn't dramatic.

She looked tired.

Very tired.

Her eyes were swollen.

She avoided looking at him.

The officer placed a tablet on the table.

"The video," he said.

Arjun nodded.

The officer played it again.

The full version.

Every second.

Including Riya saying, If anything happens to me tonight, you know who's responsible.

Then Arjun's calm voice.

Then the security call.

The officer paused the video.

He looked at Riya.

"You claimed he threatened you physically," he said.

She swallowed.

"I was emotional," she said quietly.

"That is not the same as threatened," the officer replied.

Silence.

"You also claimed he followed you without reason," the officer continued.

Riya glanced at Arjun.

"He showed up because I called him," she admitted.

The officer looked at Arjun.

"You have call logs?" he asked.

"Yes," Arjun replied.

He showed them.

Time stamps.

Multiple attempts from her.

The officer nodded slowly.

"This complaint changes context now," he said.

Riya looked nervous.

"I didn't mean for it to go this far," she whispered.

Arjun didn't react.

He didn't defend.

He didn't accuse.

He let the evidence speak.

The officer leaned back.

"Ms. Riya," he said calmly, "filing false allegations carries consequences."

Her breathing became uneven again.

"I was scared," she said.

"You escalated," the officer replied.

Silence.

The officer turned to Arjun.

"Do you wish to proceed with counter-complaint?" he asked.

That was the moment.

The room went still.

Arjun looked at Riya.

Not with anger.

Not with sympathy.

Just clarity.

"I want written withdrawal of allegations," he said.

The officer nodded.

"And removal of defamatory posts," Arjun added.

Riya's hands trembled slightly.

"I'll delete everything," she said quickly.

"That's not enough," Arjun replied.

She looked at him finally.

"What do you want?" she asked.

"Public clarification," he said.

Her face changed.

"That would ruin me," she whispered.

Arjun's voice stayed steady.

"You tried to ruin me."

Silence stretched.

The officer cleared his throat.

"You have until tomorrow to submit written statement," he told Riya.

She nodded weakly.

The meeting ended.

Outside the station, Riya stopped him.

"Arjun," she said softly.

He stopped but didn't turn fully.

"You won," she said.

"This isn't winning," he replied.

She looked smaller now.

"I didn't think you'd stay calm," she admitted.

"That's the part you miscalculated," he said.

Her eyes filled slightly.

"I thought if I pushed hard enough, you'd react," she whispered.

"I stopped reacting," he replied.

She stood there silently.

Then said something unexpected.

"I didn't plan for it to spiral."

"It always spirals when lies pile up," he said.

No philosophy.

Just fact.

She didn't argue.

By afternoon, his manager called again.

"Police update?" the manager asked.

"Withdrawal in progress," Arjun replied.

There was a pause.

"You handled this professionally," the manager said.

"I documented everything," Arjun replied.

"We're lifting the internal review," the manager said.

Arjun nodded once.

"Return tomorrow," the manager added.

"Understood," Arjun replied.

He ended the call and sat quietly in his car for a moment.

The pressure in his chest eased slightly.

Not relief.

Resolution.

At 5:12 p.m., his phone buzzed again.

Unknown number.

Unknown:

She's panicking.

Arjun typed back.

Arjun:

Why?

The reply came after a minute.

Unknown:

Because the bank contacted her too.

Arjun frowned.

Arjun:

About what?

Pause.

Then:

Unknown:

The attempted loan.

Arjun's eyes narrowed.

He hadn't filed a complaint yet.

But he had submitted objection.

That triggered internal review.

The unknown number sent another message.

Unknown:

They're investigating forged guarantor signature.

Arjun leaned back slowly.

That was bigger.

Much bigger.

That evening, Aditya called again.

"She called me," he said immediately.

"What did she say?" Arjun asked.

"She's asking me to confirm you pressured her," Aditya replied.

Arjun's jaw tightened.

"And?" he asked.

"I refused," Aditya said.

"Did she threaten you?" Arjun asked.

"Yes," Aditya replied. "She said if I don't support her, she'll release old chats."

Arjun exhaled slowly.

"She's losing control," Aditya said.

"Yes," Arjun replied.

"And desperate people escalate," Aditya added.

"I know," Arjun said.

At 8:46 p.m., Neha messaged.

She's in HR office right now.

Arjun stared at the screen.

Why? he typed.

Damage control, Neha replied.

A minute later:

They're asking about falsified documents.

Arjun didn't respond.

He placed his phone on the table and stared at nothing for a few seconds.

It had turned.

Completely.

At 10:11 p.m., Riya called again.

He considered ignoring it.

Then answered.

Her voice was different.

Not angry.

Not dramatic.

"Why didn't you file a counter-case?" she asked quietly.

"I might," he replied.

She inhaled sharply.

"You're waiting," she said.

"Yes."

"For what?" she asked.

"For truth to settle," he replied.

Silence.

"You're enjoying this," she said.

"No," he replied calmly. "I'm just not saving you anymore."

She started crying softly.

"Please," she whispered. "Don't let this destroy me."

"You tried to destroy me," he replied.

"I was scared," she said again.

"You were strategic," he corrected.

Silence.

Then she said something unexpected.

"There's something else," she whispered.

Arjun didn't respond immediately.

"What?" he asked finally.

But she didn't answer.

She just hung up.

Five minutes later, the unknown number messaged again.

Unknown:

She just told HR everything.

Arjun's fingers tightened.

Arjun:

Everything?

Pause.

Then the reply came.

Unknown:

She admitted the signatures were forged.

And she named Vikram as the one who suggested it.

Arjun stared at the message.

Because that meant—

The blame was shifting.

And when desperate people start blaming each other…

It gets uglier.
