Chapter 39 - Chapter 38: The Agreement

For a long time...

The room was so quiet you could hear a pin drop.

Two white-haired boys stood facing each other, locked in a complex silence.

"How did you even come to that conclusion?" Yuu asked, his face a picture of speechlessness.

Killua didn't answer. Instead, he tilted his head slightly, fixing his gaze on Yuu's snowy white hair.

"..."

Seeing this, Yuu pretty much understood Killua's thought process.

He opened his mouth to explain, but after thinking it over, he realized he didn't know where to start. He swallowed his words.

Thinking back on his own actions, combined with their nearly identical white hair...

Yuu felt that aside from a paternity test, any other proof would seem pale and unconvincing.

And doing that... might not meet Killua's expectations. The truth was just too cruel.

...

Watching Yuu's hesitation, the certainty in Killua's eyes only grew stronger. A triumphant smirk appeared on his lips.

"I can't be wrong..."

Killua was now convinced: this guy was definitely his dad's illegitimate son.

If not, how else could you explain why he acted so familiar from the moment they met, or why he knew everything about him?

And why would someone so powerful look out for him like this?

All those nagging questions suddenly had an answer right in front of him. Everything made sense now.

...

A few minutes later.

Looking at the growing anticipation in Killua's eyes, Yuu weighed his options and decided to just accept this "cheap little brother."

"You win..."

Yuu let out a sigh of relief, as if a weight had been lifted.

"It's... pretty much what you guessed."

As he spoke, Yuu put his wig and hat back on, then gave Killua a warning:

"But remember, don't expose our relationship in front of outsiders... got it?"

"Yeah, yeah, of course."

Killua nodded obediently, not asking for reasons.

Now that he had a verbal confirmation, Killua easily accepted the scenario he had already played out in his head.

So I have another brother...

Killua studied Yuu's face, making silent calculations.

"He looks about Milluki's age, thirteen or fourteen. That makes him about six years younger than Illumi."

"Looking at it that way, I'm not actually the third son... I'm the fourth?"

"And if I work backwards from that, Dad must have been..."

Seeing Killua suddenly lower his head, putting on his best detective face as he tried to piece together the timeline, Yuu couldn't help but ask:

"What are you figuring out?"

"Nothing, Third Brother," Killua replied casually.

"..."

Black lines practically appeared on Yuu's face.

He suddenly regretted accepting this weirdo little brother so easily.

However, although coincidence had played a part in getting here, since Killua already saw him as a brother...

Yuu didn't mind stepping up as an older brother to worry about this troublesome kid.

"That mysterious person... could it be Illumi...?"

Yuu silently recalled the gloomy aura he had sensed earlier. Thinking about it now, it did feel somewhat similar to Killua when he got serious.

Or rather, it was the unique aura of an assassin.

Most likely, if it wasn't Illumi... it was an assassin sent by the Zoldycks' enemies.

Those were basically the only two possibilities.

Mentioning Illumi brought the cold image of a black-haired beauty to Yuu's mind.

Just imagining it, Yuu could guess how Illumi would react if he found out Killua had adopted a brother on the outside.

Knowing Illumi's personality, his first reaction would likely be to kill Yuu, regardless of whether the information was true or not.

After all, in Illumi's heart, Killua had always been his most cherished... pawn?

Whether for the sake of solidifying control over the Zoldyck family, or because of his twisted personality and twisted love for Killua, or even later to firmly control "Nanika"...

With all those reasons combined...

Given Illumi's extreme control-freak nature, he would absolutely never tolerate a second person influencing Killua's thoughts and actions.

So an assassination attempt was inevitable.

Of course, whether Illumi could actually kill him... Yuu didn't think it was something to worry too much about.

After all, Illumi's methods—whether his needles or his exquisite assassination techniques—were perfectly countered by the "Limitless Technique."

Unless Illumi had the ability to command "Nanika," he posed basically zero threat.

Thinking of this, Yuu looked thoughtfully at Killua beside him. He felt it was indeed necessary to ensure the boy's physical and mental well-being.

If the future deviated and Killua failed to take Nanika away, but instead fell into Illumi's hands along with her...

The consequences would be unimaginable.

Although Yuu wanted to teach Killua Nen to help him break through his mental shackles, doing so would drastically affect the future plot, creating unpredictable butterfly effects.

However, in Yuu's view...

As long as he ensured Killua met Gon, even if the journey changed, the final outcome shouldn't be too different.

So, he showed Killua his Hunter License.

...

In the room, Killua toyed with the card bearing the Hunter Association logo. He didn't seem particularly interested, remarking casually:

"Looks pretty ordinary, this Hunter License..."

"I thought so too, but whether you can pass... that's another story."

Yuu replied, "The Hunter Exam might be harder than you think."

Hearing this, Killua clicked his tongue in dissatisfaction but didn't say much more.

Then, Yuu explained his plan to Killua:

"Barring any surprises, I should be leaving here in a few days."

"Where to?"

"Not sure. Could be anywhere."

As he spoke, Yuu thought of the Dark Continent and its infinite terrors. He said earnestly:

"The only thing I'm sure of right now is that as you are... if you can't break through your inner shackles, the gap between us will only grow wider. You'll never be able to keep up with me."

"..."

Killua fell silent, his head dropping unconsciously.

He knew what he feared deep down, but he couldn't overcome it. Or rather...

He had no way to overcome it.

That fear had penetrated his marrow, his cognition, and his very way of thinking.

Under Illumi's tutelage, that was his nature... to cower before strong enemies, to abandon friends and run away in the face of danger.

Killua had even begun to accept his own cowardice. Following his brother's philosophy, he never made friends and gradually became withdrawn.

Yuu understood this too.

In his view, only when Killua found someone he truly cherished, someone he was willing to lay down his life for... only then could he hope to overcome his fear and pull out the needle Illumi had left in his brain.

And that person obviously wasn't Yuu.

It was Gon.

So, after waiting for a long time, Yuu walked up to Killua, ruffled his fluffy white hair, and said:

"Four years from now, when you turn twelve, I'll probably apply to be an examiner... If you're still unconvinced, sign up for the exam then. Let me see how much you've grown."

"If you can pass the exam then, I'll grant you one request, no strings attached."

As the sentence ended, Killua instantly regained some of his spirit. He looked up and said:

"No take-backs!"

Seeing Killua's fighting spirit reignited, Yuu was surprised his promise was so effective. He smiled faintly.

"Yeah, it's a promise."

In that instant, Yuu suddenly understood... why Illumi was so obsessed with this kid.
