Chapter 1 - The Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ:

Biblical Apologetics

*The Supremacy and Sufficiency of Christ: Colossians 1:15-20.*

----------------------

Paul continues to refute the false teachers by clearly and unequivocally describing Deity of Christ.

The heresy teachers claimed that Jesus was only an angel and a created being like them. This is the key passage in the letter to Colossians. Let us draw 10 points on the Deity of the Lord Jesus Christ:

1. Christ is the Image of God: Christ is the exact representation of God in His glory, power and character qualities. We cannot see, know or understand God apart from Christ. His life clearly demonstrate the very nature and characteristics of God.

John 1:14- the Word manifested in flesh and blood.

John 14:8: who has seen the Lord Jesus has seen the Father God.

Hebrews 1:3. He is the radiance of God's glory and the exact imprint of His nature.

2. He was first in the beginning of Creation and redemption:

He was there even before God created angels, earth and heaven and human beings. All things were created by Him, and for Him.

3. He holds all things together: He is the controller and sustainer of all nature and universe.

4. Christ is the Head of the Church: He is the One who leads, directs His church. Earthly human leaders are only delegated servants. Realizing this will keep all in unity to the Lordship of Christ, rather than fight for positions.

5. He rose from the dead as first-fruits: Nobody else overcame death and grave. He has power over nature, humans, spirit beings, all diseases, death and grave. Romans 1:4.

6. He is the Preeminent One in all things: Let the Lord be preeminent in our lives and churches too. Phil. 2:11.

7. Christ is the fullness of God: In Him all the fullness of Godhead dwells bodily. His divine nature was manifested in all the wonders and signs He performed. He shared all that He had with the Father (John 17). He was One with the Father and hence has all the fullness.

8. Reconciler- brought man and God together in peace. Through His blood, Christ made peace with God and man. He became the mediator of the New Covenant through His blood. Hebrews 9:15.

9. "In Him dwelleth the fullness of the godhead bodily" Colossians 2:9, which means that in Jesus Christ, the complete nature of God dwells physically, signifying that Jesus is fully God in human form.

10. Christ was and is the visible image of the invisible God, containing within Himself the fullness of Deity (Colossians 2:9). Because of His divine nature, Jesus is Sovereign, above all things with an authority given Him by the Father. As such, Jesus is also Head over the church.

Do you know who Christ is? May you experience His fullness by faith and obedience. Amen.

In Christ's Sufficiency!
