Chapter 6 - When the world Breaks

Chapter Seven: When the World Breaks

The city was unforgiving. Every day brought new challenges, every night whispered threats. Amira and Lina had learned to move silently, to hide in shadows, to make themselves small—but the world never let them rest.

Lina's fever had finally broken, leaving her weak and fragile. She moved like a ghost, her laughter hollow, her steps cautious. Amira carried her when she could, and when she couldn't, she stayed close, keeping watch for anyone who might see them.

Their work at the tailor's shop had become a lifeline—but it also became a prison. Long hours bent over needles, sweating in the heat, barely making enough to eat. The owner's sharp tongue and impatient hands reminded them daily that their place in the world was small, temporary, and fragile.

One afternoon, as Amira stitched a hem, she noticed a familiar face in the crowd outside the shop window. A man, watching, waiting, lingering too long. Her heart froze.

"It's him," she whispered to Lina later, voice tight. "The one who's been following us… watching us. He knows where we are."

Lina's hands shook as she pressed them to her chest. "What do we do? We can't run anymore. Not like this."

Amira's jaw tightened. "Then we fight. We survive. Together."

But survival required choices, and the city demanded sacrifices. That night, they left the safety of the classroom, moving again through streets slick with rain. Every shadow became a potential threat. Every footstep behind them, a promise of danger.

They found temporary shelter in the ruins of an old warehouse. Rusted metal and broken windows made it cold, damp, and uncomfortable—but it was hidden. For a few nights, they could sleep without fear.

It was there, in the quiet of the warehouse, that the weight of their lives pressed down hardest. Lina whispered, almost too quietly to hear:

"Amira… do you ever wonder if it's worth it? All this running, hiding… loving each other in a world that wants to destroy us?"

Amira held her tight, tears slipping down her cheeks. "Every day. But I can't stop loving you. Not now, not ever. We have to keep going… even if the world wants to break us."

The days passed in a rhythm of work, survival, and stolen moments of joy. They laughed when they could, cried when they couldn't hold it in, and whispered words of encouragement into the cold night. Their love was their armor, fragile but unbreakable.

But the city had other plans. One night, as they returned from a day's work, a group of men blocked the street, their shadows long and menacing in the dim light.

"You girls," one said, voice low, dangerous. "We know who you are. You can't hide forever."

Amira grabbed Lina, dragging her down a side alley, heart racing, mind screaming. They ran, feet slipping in puddles, lungs burning. Behind them, the men followed, shouting threats and laughter.

For the first time, Amira realized that the world was not just cruelit was hunting them. And there was no one to stop it.

They stumbled into an abandoned lot, panting, wet, trembling. Amira pressed Lina against her chest, trying to calm her own fear. "We… we can't stop. Not now. Not ever."

But even as she spoke, she knew the truth: survival was no longer enough. They had been forced to leave every place they had called safe, every shadow that had offered refuge. They were running from a world that refused to forgive, a world that demanded their destruction simply for existing.

And then, as they crouched in the darkness, the sound came footsteps, slow and deliberate. Closer. Closer.

Amira held her breath. Lina's hand was shaking in hers. And in that moment, the fragile illusion of safety shattered.

The world had caught up.
