Chapter 53 - unexpected attitude

Jay was in the east wing, arranging some snacks for the younger kids, when Kia appeared from her room. She had that same sharp, calculating look that Keifer had noticed earlier.

"Jay… why are you always sticking around like you own this place?" Kia said, her tone dripping with irritation.

Jay blinked, a little taken aback. "I… I just like helping the kids feel comfortable," she said gently, smiling in an attempt to calm her.

Kia scoffed. "Helping? More like… showing off. You think everyone here should revolve around you, don't you?"

Jay's smile faltered slightly, but she kept her calm. "I'm not trying to show off. I just care… that's all."

"Caring doesn't give you the right to boss everyone around," Kia snapped, stepping closer. "Don't forget, this is my home too, in a way. You can't just take over."

Keifer, who had been passing by, caught the edge in Kia's voice from the hall. He appeared silently behind Jay, placing a hand lightly on her shoulder. His presence was enough to steady her.

"Kia," he said quietly, his tone calm but firm, "watch your words. Jay isn't trying to take over anything. She's part of this family, and she's here to help everyone feel safe."

Kia turned toward him, eyes narrowing, but there was a flicker of hesitation as she met Keifer's steady gaze. "I… I wasn't talking to you," she said sharply, though the edge in her voice softened slightly.

Keifer didn't move, his hand still on Jay's shoulder. "Good. Then maybe you should think before speaking. Jay has done nothing but care for this family, including you."

Jay squeezed Keifer's hand lightly, grateful for his support. Kia huffed and stormed back to her room, muttering under her breath, but the tension remained.

"Some people just need time to adjust," Jay murmured, letting out a slow breath.

Keifer nodded, eyes following Kia's retreating figure. "Time… or someone needs to learn that they can't push everyone around. Don't worry, I'll keep an eye on her."

Jay leaned against him, letting herself relax a little. "Thanks… you always have my back."

"Always," Keifer said softly. "No one messes with you… not in this house."

Even though Kia's attitude had caused a ripple of tension, the bond between Jay and Keifer only grew stronger, their silent understanding protecting them as the mansion continued to adjust to its newest members.
