Chapter 8 - Chapter 8

"Why did you wake me up so early if it's so close? It only takes me a few minutes to get ready. My hair is already frizzy enough because I'm a redhead, and I don't have to worry too much about clothes because we're going to be fighting a war. I do accessorize a little, but not as much as some other people do. So next time could you wake me up maybe five minutes later?"

Luna shook her head, closing the map as the large white numbers seated across the left side of the building came into view.

"I cannot indulge your menial requests. I'm your roommate, and you have to trust me, and I am working to trust you. But trust can only be built if we're on the same page. We need to arrive everywhere 15 minutes early, especially if it's a class. If not, my brain is going to stress on overdrive. You don't want me to reverse back to the person you just met a few days ago. You help me, Abby. You're showing me that all rich people aren't snobs and that some actually have hearts. I let you get close to me and lay on my lap. That doesn't normally happen." Luna put her map in her pocket as she pulled out her goober and started fidgeting with it wildly.

"Calm down, we don't want to regress," Abby says as she walks behind Luna, putting her hands on her back and massaging her shoulders gently. "We're going to get there actually 17 minutes before it's supposed to start. So everything's going to be okay. I'm okay, you're okay. The goober is okay."

Luna looks down at the ground as she felt the tension in her shoulders release slowly into Abby's comforting hands. "The goober is okay. I'm okay. Alright, we're almost there. You can stop massaging my back now even though it feels good. I don't want people to get the wrong idea."

"Sorry about that," Abby says, letting go quickly and skipping back up beside her. The building came into view with a large brown building with glass on the second floor. It had two large wooden doors at the front with the word "come" on top of it.

"I wonder what that means," Abby says.

"Maybe it means that we're all one big family," Luna says, speaking up. "Especially since we're all fighting the same war. A war that never should've been fought, but I digress."

"Nice to see you again, beautiful lady." A voice rang out as Abby and Luna walked to the front of the building.

"Do you know him?" Luna inquired.

"I know of him," Abby states, cutting her a glance.

"Those eyes of yours tell a story," Cody says suavely. "Story of a damsel in distress that needs rescuing. But don't worry, yours truly Cody Lancaster is here to show you the way. Take my hand."

"I'm gonna politely pass. I know where our room is and I think I will go get some coffee, but I look forward to seeing you around." Abby politely nodded at him, Luna looking at the ground quickly skipped behind her.

"Alright, sweet cheeks, I'll be seeing you real soon," Cody says with a big smile. The brazen young man rounded the corner taking his time smacking himself in the nose, as if brushing off the insult with the slightest of ease.

"He seemed a little bit of a creep," Luna states as she hurried up towards the coffee pot, quickly dispensing some coffee with hazelnut creamer and cinnamon.

"Honestly, most of the men here are desperate. The front lines are pretty brutal, and the survival rate is low. I guess the law of demand may be making moves on women that they don't like to have a chance with." Abby grabbed a cinnamon-flavored scone with a powdered doughnut and placed them on a small white plate. She walks back over to her friend who was finishing up a cup of coffee for her.

"I may do a special one with heavy whipping cream, like you like it, and a little bit of Irish cream. Grab me one of my favorite doughnuts," Luna smiles sheepishly as she looks at the powdered doughnut on the plate.

"Don't worry, I make sure you have enough fuel for the first half of the morning. To the main room. I think it's room 125, so it should be down the hallway to the left from what I observed earlier."

The hallway was littered with people of different ranks from all over the country. Some had thick mustaches, while others were bald. Some were muscular, while others needed to put on a few pounds. Abby was astonished at all the different people. She was used to the countryside, where there were good folk everywhere, but now she was in a new environment where she had to adapt or be left behind.

"I don't know if I'm ready," Luna says, clutching her goober in her right hand, twirling it with both of her thumbs. "I mean, I see the numbers were coming up on it and I just don't know if I can do it. I think I'm going to pass out," she squealed.

"I'll go first," Abby smiles, walking into the room. Her eyes widened. That was the guy from the church yesterday. How come I never put two and two together?
