Chapter 61: The Unwritten Law

The darkness reached the center of the Library. The white marble floors began to crumble into grey ash, and the millions of data-rods—the collective history of the McCain line—were being deleted by the second. Prince Valerius's voice boomed through the void, broadcasted by the Black-Box itself.

"Do you feel it, Carson? The weight of reality reasserting itself? You were an error in the system. A beautiful, violent anomaly. But the system is finally correcting you."

Carson didn't answer. He sat on the floor, ignoring the ash and the cold. He focused on the only thing the Black-Box couldn't calculate: the memory of the "Ten-Unit Hunger" in the gutters of New Seattle. He remembered the smell of the grease, the weight of the scrap metal, and the look in Silas's eyes when he was betrayed.

He didn't try to draw Qi from the star. Instead, he began to burn his own Memories.

This was the 35th Strand—The Sovereign's Will. It wasn't a thread of energy; it was a thread of "Fact." The fact that he existed. The fact that he had suffered. The fact that he refused to be erased.

A single, microscopic spark of colorless light appeared in the center of Carson's chest. It didn't glow; it carved. It carved through the darkness of the Black-Box like a diamond through glass. The Entropic Calculus tried to define the spark, but the spark changed its value every millisecond based on Carson's shifting emotions. It was the "Unwritten Law"—the power of pure, chaotic human will.

"Aura! Sync to the 35th!" Carson commanded, his physical voice returning.

As the spark expanded, it didn't just push back the darkness; it rewrote it. The grey ash of the Library reformed into marble. The deleted data-rods began to restore themselves from Carson's own subconscious. The Styx-7 star, which had been on the verge of a total "Null-Collapse," suddenly flared with a light that was neither emerald nor violet, but a blinding, absolute white.

"Impossible!" Valerius screamed as the Black-Box in his hand shattered into a thousand pieces, the feedback of the 35th Strand turning his silver blood into boiling lead. "No one can survive the Null-Zone! No one!"

"You forgot one thing, Prince," Carson's voice echoed across the sector, vibrating with the power of a man who had finally reconciled his godhood with his humanity. "A Sovereign doesn't follow the laws. A Sovereign is the law."
