Chapter 4 - Observe

The girls moved without hesitation.

Several empty seats were available throughout the classroom, yet Rias Gremory chose the desk directly beside Silas—one row over, close enough for conversation without being obvious.

Akeno Himejima took the seat in front of him on the same column, her long black ponytail falling neatly down her back as she settled in.

Silas watched them take their seats from the corner of his eye.

'Is is where they genuinely sit,' he thought. 'I expected them to be front-row honor student types.'

But no—this positioning was strategic. Close enough to observe the class, enough to intervene if needed and close enough to him.

A few students nearby exchanged subtle glances. Rias didn't usually change seating without reason. Akeno certainly didn't.

Silas leaned back slightly in his chair, pretending indifference.

Moments later, the homeroom teacher entered. She was a woman in her early thirties with neatly tied hair and the kind of expression that demanded attention without raising her voice. The room quieted quickly.

She placed her attendance book on the desk and scanned the class before her eyes landed on Silas.

"Alright, class. We have a new student today. Please stand up and introduce yourself."

Silas nodded and rose to his feet.

The shift was immediate.

Dozens of eyes turned toward him. Conversations halted. Even the students pretending not to care were clearly listening. There was a subtle pressure in the air—not supernatural, just social. The quiet judgment of peers sizing up the new arrival.

Silas felt it.

And dismissed it.

"My name is Silas Morvane," he said evenly, his voice calm but carrying clearly across the room. "It's nice to meet you all. I hope we have a wonderful time together and make fond memories."

His tone was polite. Composed. Slightly formal without being stiff.

For a brief second, the room was silent.

Then—

The class clapped.

It wasn't thunderous, but it was genuine. A few girls smiled. Some boys nodded in approval.

One whispered, "Bro talks like a protagonist."

Silas allowed himself a small smile and sat back down.

The teacher gave a satisfied nod. "Alright, class. Let's begin with marking the register."

As she started calling names, the classroom gradually returned to its usual rhythm. Pens scratched paper. Chairs shifted. Someone yawned loudly in the back.

Silas turned slightly toward the window, watching the sunlight spill across the courtyard outside.

'I think I handled that well,' he thought calmly.

A breeze stirred the curtains near the back corner of the room. Then he felt it.

A gaze.

Rias was looking at him. Not smiling just studying for whatever reason.

The moment their eyes met, she smoothly looked forward again as if nothing had happened.

'…Awkward,' Silas thought.

Behind her composed exterior, Rias was analyzing him carefully. His introduction had been normal. His posture normal. His energy—

Still nonexistent.

Akeno, sitting in front of him, tilted her head ever so slightly, listening not to the teacher—but to the silence behind her.

Silas leaned back again, folding his arms casually. If they wanted to observe him, that was fine.

He'd let them after all, this was just the beginning.

The morning lessons passed without incident. Silas spent most of it half-listening to the lectures, occasionally glancing outside as teachers rotated in and out. Mathematics, literature, history—ordinary subjects in a not-so-ordinary town. He answered once when called on, earning a small nod of approval from the teacher. Other than that, he kept to himself.

When the bell finally rang for break, the atmosphere shifted instantly. Chairs scraped loudly against the floor as students stood, conversations exploding back to life. Some rushed out into the hallway, others formed small circles inside the classroom. Laughter filled the air again.

Silas remained seated.

He rested his elbow lightly on the desk, watching the organized chaos unfold around him.

A couple of girls from earlier cast glances his way, clearly debating whether to approach.

He didn't have to wait long.

Akeno turned around smoothly in her seat, her long ponytail swaying over her shoulder as she faced him fully. Her smile was warm—too warm to be accidental.

"So," she began gently, resting her chin lightly on her hand, "Silas-kun, was it? You transferred here rather suddenly."

Her violet eyes studied him closely, not invasive, but observant.

Silas met her gaze calmly. "That's right."

Rias shifted slightly in her seat beside him, angling her body just enough to join the conversation without making it obvious she had planned to. Her posture was relaxed, but her turquoise eyes were sharp.

"Where did you transfer from?" Rias asked casually. "We don't often receive students mid-term."

Silas expected that question. "I was living abroad for a while," he replied smoothly. "Family matters brought me back to Japan."

Akeno hummed thoughtfully. "Abroad? How interesting. That must have been quite the adjustment."

"It was," Silas said with a faint smile. "Kuoh seems peaceful though."

Rias's lips curved slightly at that. "Peaceful… yes. Most of the time."

There was weight behind her words.

Silas caught it immediately.

Akeno tilted her head. "And how are you finding 3-B so far?"

"It's lively," he replied. "I think I'll enjoy it."

Rias studied his face carefully. No hesitation. No visible lies. No fear.

"Do you have any hobbies?" she continued. "Sports? Clubs?"

Silas leaned back slightly. "I enjoy training."

Akeno's smile sharpened just a little. "Training?"

"Martial arts. Physical conditioning. I like pushing myself."

Rias's eyes flickered with interest. "That's admirable."

He could tell they were probing gently, trying to measure him without revealing their own curiosity.

"And you?" Silas asked smoothly, shifting the attention. "You both seem rather popular."

Akeno laughed softly. "Ara, we simply participate in school activities."

Rias nodded. "We're part of a club."

"The Occult Research Club, right?" Silas said lightly.

Both girls paused for the briefest second.

Akeno's smile didn't falter, but her eyes gleamed. "You've done your homework."

"Hard not to notice the most famous club in school."

Rias held his gaze for a moment longer than necessary. "If you're interested, you're welcome to visit sometime."

Silas smiled faintly. "I might take you up on that."

Around them, the noise of the classroom continued, oblivious to the quiet tension woven into the conversation.

Rias rose gracefully from her seat. "We won't keep you from enjoying your break."

Akeno stood as well, offering him one last measured look. "We'll be seeing you again, Silas-kun."

"I look forward to it," he replied.

As they walked away, Silas exhaled slowly.

'That's how they play it. Calm. Calculated. Polite.' His lips curved slightly. 'This might be more entertaining than I thought.'

He soon rose from his seat once the brief lull in conversation settled and decided to head to the cafeteria. Even if he didn't strictly need the food, blending in meant acting normal. The cafeteria was on the first floor, which meant navigating through two levels of crowded hallways.

The stairwell was packed. Students flowed up and down in steady streams, voices echoing against the concrete walls. The scent of food—fried cutlets, curry bread, fresh rice—floated faintly upward from below. Lockers slammed somewhere down the hall, and a group of boys rushed past him, nearly tripping over themselves in their hurry to secure decent lunch options.

Silas descended calmly, hands in his pockets, posture relaxed.

By the time he reached the second floor landing, the atmosphere shifted slightly.

A small crowd had formed near the corridor windows.

At the center of it stood Yuuto Kiba.

Polished. Refined. Effortlessly charming.

His blond hair caught the light neatly, and his smile was soft but perfectly measured—the kind that made girls lean in unconsciously. Several of them stood close, laughing a little too eagerly at whatever he had just said.

"Good morning, Kiba-kun!"

"Are you free after school?"

"You promised to show me that fencing move again!"

Kiba chuckled gently, answering with practiced kindness. He had the composure of someone who understood exactly how he was perceived and used it carefully.

As Silas approached, Kiba's eyes shifted.

Just briefly.

A single glance.

Measured. Curious.

Silas didn't slow down. He met the look evenly, offering a faint, unreadable smile as he walked past.

Behind him, something interesting happened.

Every single girl in Kiba's orbit did a full head turn.

Necks craned.

Conversations faltered.

Eyes tracked Silas as he moved down the hallway.

It lasted all of three seconds.

Then, almost as if remembering themselves, they snapped their attention back to Kiba, resuming their admiration with slightly forced enthusiasm.

His smile didn't falter, but his gaze followed Silas for just a fraction longer this time.

'Wow. They've already told everyone about me,' Silas thought as he continued toward the stairs. 'Not surprising though.'

Word traveled fast in a place like this—especially when it involved someone new, someone different.

Especially when it involved Rias.

Silas descended the remaining steps toward the first floor, the cafeteria noise growing louder with each step. He could already feel the shift in atmosphere awaiting him below.
