Chapter 29 - Chapter 29: Beneath the Queit Tracks

The subway entrance looked abandoned.

Rust clung to the railings like dried blood, and faded warning signs hung crookedly on the walls. Most of the lights were dead, leaving only a few flickering bulbs that cast uneven shadows across the cracked concrete.

This part of the district had been closed years ago, after a small distortion incident forced the last train line to shut down. Since then, the place had become just another forgotten corner of the city.

Which made it the perfect hiding spot.

Aiden stood at the top of the stairwell, looking down into the darkness. A cool draft rose from below, carrying the faint smell of iron and dust. It felt like the breath of something sleeping underground.

Ignis stood beside him, her golden eyes glowing faintly in the dim light.

"It's there," she said quietly. "Deep below. I can feel it."

Aiden didn't look away from the stairwell. "How bad?"

"Not stable yet," she replied. "But it's growing. Slowly. Deliberately."

He slipped the data chip back into his pocket.

"So the shadow faction wasn't lying."

Ignis's lips curved slightly. "They rarely lie. They just never tell the whole truth."

They began descending the stairs.

Each step echoed faintly, the sound swallowed by the darkness below. The handrail felt cold beneath Aiden's fingers, rough with rust. Somewhere in the distance, a loose piece of metal clanged softly, disturbed by the movement of air.

The deeper they went, the heavier the atmosphere became.

It wasn't strong enough to be dangerous yet, but it was there. A faint, unnatural pressure against the skin. Like the feeling before a storm.

Aiden paused halfway down.

"I can feel it now," he said. "That pulse."

Ignis nodded. "Yes. It's not natural. Someone is feeding it energy from below."

"Carefully," Aiden added. "Not enough to trigger alarms. Just enough to make it grow."

That meant this wasn't some reckless experiment.

It was planned.

Which made it far more dangerous.

They reached the old platform.

Dust covered the cracked tiles, and parts of the ceiling had collapsed over the years, leaving piles of broken concrete along the edges. The rails were rusted, half-buried under debris.

The silence here felt different from the city above.

Thicker.

Like the air itself was holding its breath.

Aiden stepped onto the platform.

Then he stopped.

Ignis noticed immediately. "You feel it too."

"Yes."

They weren't alone.

A faint sound echoed from the tunnel ahead.

Footsteps.

Not hurried.

Not stealthy.

Just calm, deliberate steps approaching through the darkness.

Aiden's hand moved to the hilt of his blade.

The shadows shifted.

Then a figure emerged.

A young woman stepped out of the tunnel, the faint emergency lights reflecting off her silver hair. She wore a dark coat over light combat gear, and a thin, elegant sword rested at her side.

Her expression was calm—almost bored—but her eyes were sharp enough to cut.

She stopped a few meters away.

"So," she said, her voice echoing softly across the empty platform, "you're the one who cleared the industrial zone."

Aiden didn't relax his stance. "And you are?"

She tilted her head slightly. "Someone with the same problem as you."

Ignis studied her carefully. "Her mana is strange. Cold… but very clean."

The girl smirked. "Nice companion you've got there."

Aiden kept his eyes on her. "Why are you here?"

She shrugged. "Because something ugly is growing down there. And if it wakes up, this whole district is going to suffer."

"That matches what I heard," Aiden said.

She raised an eyebrow. "So you're not here to claim territory."

"No."

"Good," she replied. "Because I'd hate to fight someone who actually looks competent."

Ignis chuckled softly. "I like her already."

The girl glanced back toward the tunnel.

"The distortion core is about two hundred meters down," she said. "Still small, but the growth rate is wrong."

"Artificial," Aiden said.

She nodded. "Exactly. Someone's feeding it."

Aiden studied her. "You went in alone?"

"Of course," she said. "I don't work with guilds."

Ignis raised an eyebrow. "Independent?"

"Something like that."

A low vibration rolled through the tracks.

The rails trembled, and dust fell from the ceiling in thin streams.

All three of them felt it.

The girl's expression sharpened. "It's getting stronger."

Aiden looked into the dark tunnel. "Then we don't have much time."

She crossed her arms. "So what's your plan, hero?"

"I go in," Aiden said. "I find the source. And I stop it."

She smirked. "Straightforward. I like that."

Ignis glanced at her. "You're planning to help him?"

The girl shrugged. "Maybe. Depends on how interesting this gets."

Aiden stepped toward the edge of the platform.

The darkness ahead seemed thicker than normal, swallowing the weak light behind him. The pulse of the distortion grew clearer with each step.

Slow.

Unnatural.

Hungry.

But just as he set his foot on the tracks—

The system activated.

[Hidden Scenario Detected]

Location: Subterranean Distortion Zone

Threat Level: Rising

New Mission Unlocked:

Stop the Artificial Core Before Stabilization

Special Condition:

Form a temporary contract with the "Frostblade" nearby.

Reward:

Unknown.

Aiden froze.

His eyes shifted toward the silver-haired girl.

She raised an eyebrow. "Why are you looking at me like that?"

Ignis's lips curved into a knowing smile. "Well… that explains things."

Aiden exhaled slowly.

Of course the system would do this now.

He turned back to the girl. "Looks like we're working together."

She frowned slightly. "Excuse me?"

"There's a mission," he said. "And you're part of the condition."

Her smirk returned. "And why would I agree to that?"

Aiden met her gaze calmly.

"Because if that core stabilizes," he said, "neither of us walks out of here."

For a moment, she just stared at him.

The air between them felt heavy, charged with unspoken tension.

Then she smiled.

Not the bored smirk from before.

A real smile.

"…Now that," she said, "sounds like fun."
