Chapter 22 - Chapter 22: An Offer with Teeth

Chapter 22: An Offer with Teeth

The message arrived before sunrise.

Aiden noticed it the moment he opened his eyes. The notification blinked quietly on his device, marked with a priority tag he hadn't seen before.

Private Meeting Request

Sender: Ironcrest Guild

He stared at the name for a moment.

Ironcrest wasn't the largest guild in the city, but it was one of the oldest. Known for discipline, stability, and a reputation for surviving conflicts that destroyed younger organizations.

They didn't move without reason.

Ignis, seated near the window, glanced at him. "You've received something interesting."

Aiden handed her the device.

She read the message, then smiled faintly. "Direct approach. No middlemen."

"They're confident," Aiden said.

"Or desperate," Ignis replied. "Sometimes the difference is small."

The meeting location was neutral ground.

A quiet café near the edge of the commercial district, far from the Association's central towers and even farther from any guild headquarters. The kind of place where business deals happened in low voices over coffee.

Lina met him outside.

"You actually came," she said, surprised.

"I said I'd consider offers," Aiden replied.

"This isn't just an offer," she said. "Ironcrest doesn't chase rookies. Not even talented ones."

Ignis tilted her head. "Then why now?"

Lina hesitated. "Because they're afraid of what happens if someone else gets to him first."

Aiden didn't comment.

He already suspected as much.

Inside the café, the atmosphere was quiet but tense.

One corner table was occupied by a single man in a dark gray coat. He looked to be in his early forties, with short hair and sharp, observant eyes.

He didn't look like a hunter.

But the way the air around him felt said otherwise.

The man stood as Aiden approached.

"Hunter Blackwood," he said. "Thank you for coming."

"Aiden is fine," he replied.

The man nodded. "Then you may call me Director Kael."

They sat.

Ignis remained standing nearby, pretending to study the décor. Lina took a seat beside Aiden, though she clearly wasn't comfortable.

Kael didn't waste time.

"I'll be direct," he said. "Ironcrest is interested in a partnership."

Aiden raised an eyebrow. "Not recruitment?"

Kael shook his head. "Recruitment implies ownership. We're not foolish enough to think someone in your position would accept that."

Ignis's lips curved slightly. "Smart man."

Kael continued, unfazed. "What we offer is cooperation. Mutual benefit. Operational support when needed, and independence when not."

Aiden leaned back slightly. "And what do you get out of it?"

Kael's eyes sharpened. "Stability."

"That's vague," Aiden said.

Kael nodded. "Then I'll be clearer. You are now a variable in the power structure. Some guilds will try to control you. Others will try to eliminate you before you become a threat."

Lina shifted uncomfortably.

Kael continued, "Ironcrest doesn't believe either approach is wise. We believe in balance. And right now, you represent a force that could tip that balance in dangerous ways."

"So you want to keep me close," Aiden said.

"We want to keep the board stable," Kael corrected.

A waiter arrived, placing drinks on the table.

No one touched them.

Aiden studied Kael for a moment.

"You're not here alone," he said.

Kael didn't react. "What makes you think that?"

Aiden glanced toward the café entrance. "The air outside is heavier than it should be. At least two high-rank hunters. Possibly three."

Lina stiffened.

Kael allowed himself a small smile. "Observation skills. Impressive."

"So this isn't just a friendly conversation," Aiden said.

"It is," Kael replied calmly. "But the world outside isn't always friendly."

Ignis chuckled softly. "He means someone else is already making a move."

As if on cue, the café door opened.

Two figures stepped inside.

Both wore sleek, dark armor with a crimson insignia across the chest.

Lina whispered, "Red Viper Guild…"

They didn't approach the counter. They walked straight toward Aiden's table.

Kael sighed quietly. "I was hoping we'd have more time."

One of the newcomers stopped beside the table.

"You must be Aiden Blackwood," he said. "We'd like a word."

Kael's expression hardened. "He's currently in a meeting."

The man glanced at him. "Ironcrest doesn't own the schedule of independent hunters."

Ignis tilted her head, amused. "This is getting entertaining."

Aiden remained seated.

"What do you want?" he asked calmly.

The Red Viper hunter smirked. "Simple. We want to talk about your future."

Kael leaned forward slightly. "You're interrupting a private negotiation."

The second hunter spoke this time, his voice colder. "Consider this a reminder that neutrality doesn't last forever."

The words hung in the air.

Aiden finally stood.

The movement was slow, deliberate.

But the atmosphere in the café shifted instantly.

Both Red Viper hunters stiffened, as if an invisible pressure had settled over the room.

Aiden looked at them calmly.

"I didn't agree to meet you," he said.

The first hunter smirked again. "You don't have to agree. The world moves whether you like it or not."

Aiden's eyes didn't change.

"Then let it move," he said. "Without me."

The pressure in the air intensified slightly.

Not enough to cause a scene.

But enough to make the message clear.

The two hunters exchanged a glance.

Then, without another word, they turned and left the café.

Silence returned.

Lina exhaled slowly. "That could've gone worse."

Kael nodded. "Yes. It could have."

He looked at Aiden with new interest.

"You handled that well," he said. "Most young hunters would've escalated the situation."

"I'm not interested in pointless conflicts," Aiden replied.

Kael smiled faintly. "Another reason we'd like to work with you."

Aiden didn't respond immediately.

The café felt smaller now. The world outside more complicated.

Guilds were already moving.

And this was only the beginning.

As they left the café, Ignis walked beside him.

"You see now," she said. "The board is alive."

Aiden nodded. "And everyone wants a piece of it."

Ignis smiled. "Including you."

Aiden looked up at the city skyline.

"Maybe," he said quietly. "But I'll choose my moves carefully."

Because from this point on—

Every step he took would reshape the game.
