Chapter 14 - A City that Smiles

Viridian City revealed itself slowly beyond the last thinning line of forest, rooftops catching the late-morning sun in warm shades of amber and red.

From a distance it looked exactly like the stories promised—clean stone roads, carefully trimmed trees, and bright banners drifting lazily between lampposts in the soft breeze.

Somewhere nearby, the smell of fresh bread carried through the air, mingling with the distant laughter of children chasing a wandering Pidgey across the square. For a moment, the world felt ordinary. Peaceful, even.

Silas walked forward with Monferno at his side while Elekid rested inside its Poké Ball. Travelers passed by chatting amongst themselves, merchants called out cheerful greetings, and elderly trainers sat comfortably on shaded benches discussing old battles in slow, easy voices.

Beneath the brightness, something felt uneven. Police patrols appeared more frequently than a city this calm should require, and while trainers smiled politely, their eyes lingered on strangers a heartbeat too long before looking away.

Conversations softened whenever League uniforms passed. Viridian was not dark—it simply wasn't as simple as it appeared. This city was also part of the only path to Indigo Plateau. This mountain was the pokemon league headquarters.

The security here was top notch. Plenty of league officials lived here as it was conveniently nearby. The recent attack from Team Rocket and the Blade Lotus Gang had led to heightened police presence.

There was a league breeding facility here so they had to be careful. It didn't house the likes of Zapdos offspring but there were still valuable resources and rare pokemon, some even from other regions.

Silas continued toward the Pokémon Center, its red roof bright against the sky like a promise of safety. Inside, the steady rhythm of healing machines blended with quiet conversation and the soft footsteps of Chansey moving briskly between patients.

Life here felt structured, reliable, protected. Nurse Joy greeted him with a warm smile touched by faint fatigue, the expression of someone who had seen too many long days but refused to let it show.

Silas always thought Nurse Joy was beautiful but seeing her in person was even better. He was not a lusty man but he could appreciate a woman like the women from the Joy family. The last time he encountered a Nurse Joy, he was going through a traumatic event so he hadn't noticed that Joy's beauty.

"Welcome to Viridian City. How can I help you today?"

"This is actually my first time at a center as a trainer." Silas said shyly.

"Have you registered for the pokemon league? If you intend to challenge the gyms then you need an ID card." Nurse Joy said with a smile

"What are the requirements to sign up?" Silas figured he might as well sign up. While he was unsure of if he would challenge the Indigo League, he knew gyms offered some of the best opportunities for tough battles. He couldn't pass up free training.

"We just need to see your league license. This just starts a record, showing the amount of badges you have and the Pokemon you have used."

"They've been training hard," Silas replied, placing Elekid's Poké Ball on the counter. "No serious injuries."

Joy scanned it gently and nodded. "You arrived during a busy period. Challengers always gather when the Gym becomes active."

"Active?" Silas asked.

A pause followed—small enough that most people would miss it. "Our Gym Leader prefers privacy," she said carefully. "He's a powerful businessman who funds many League projects across Kanto. Most citizens respect that he avoids public attention."

Silas already knew the name she would not say. Giovanni. Others heard admiration in her tone; he heard confirmation. Joy continued lightly, unaware of the conclusion forming in his mind. "If you plan to challenge the Gym, make sure your Pokémon are fully rested. Viridian's trainers are very experienced."

"I will," he said, renting a room for later before stepping back into the sunlight.

The trainer market stretched along a lively side street filled with color and motion. Vendors displayed berries in neat pyramids, polished Poké Balls gleamed beneath hanging lanterns, and young trainers compared supplies beside their partners with open excitement.

Everything looked honest, safe, and welcoming. Yet quieter details existed between the bright stalls—higher-grade medicines sold without labels, hushed negotiations near alley edges, and prices that subtly changed depending on who asked. Nothing illegal stood in the open, but not everything was equal either.

Silas purchased only essentials—Potions, Pecha Berries, and a pair of status salves—keeping the exchange simple and forgettable. The vendor thanked him politely and moved on without curiosity. Just business.

Beyond the market, the Viridian Gym rose from older stone darker than the cheerful buildings surrounding it. Its doors stood open in silent invitation, yet few trainers actually entered. Most glanced once before continuing on, their hesitation shaped less by fear than by respect—or perhaps caution.

Crossing the threshold, Silas felt cool air swallow the noise of the city behind him. The battlefield stretched wide beneath steady overhead lights, quiet except for a handful of watching trainers along the walls.

One man stepped forward, mid-twenties, posture relaxed with the quiet confidence of someone long past needing to prove himself. A Gliscor hovered behind him, wings folding slowly, eyes sharp and patient.

"I'm Gus," he said. "Ace trainer. You'll face me first."

"Understood."

Silas scanned the Gliscor.

Gliscor — Level 24

Ability: Poison Heal

Potential: B

Moves: Rank B Aerial Ace, Rank C X Scissor, Rank D Steel Wing, Rank C Facade, Rank D Earthquake

They took their positions without ceremony. "Go, Monferno." Flames flickered to life as Monferno landed lightly on the stone.

"Go Gliscor." The battle began immediately.

"Flame Wheel," Silas ordered.

Monferno surged forward in a spinning blaze, heat trailing like a comet's tail. Gliscor did not dodge. Its massive pincers closed in front of its body, and the flames split harmlessly against hardened chitin.

"Vacuum Wave!" Compressed bursts of air struck rapidly, yet again the pincers shifted with perfect timing, absorbing every blow with minimal motion. No wasted energy, no panic—only control.

"Sandstorm," Gus said calmly.

Wind erupted across the arena, grains of stone whipping into a violent spiral that swallowed visibility. Monferno's flames flickered under the abrasive assault as footing slipped against shifting ground.

"Stay moving," Silas called. Monferno dashed through the storm, striking with aura-charged punches fierce enough to crack stone, yet Gliscor slipped sideways through the sand with effortless precision, reading each movement before it fully formed. The difference in refinement became unmistakable.

"Earthquake."

The ground detonated beneath Monferno, shockwaves fracturing the battlefield and shattering balance instantly.

Before recovery was possible—"Aerial Ace." Gliscor vanished into the storm's heart and struck with surgical precision, launching Monferno across the arena to crash against the far wall where its flames sputtered out as it slid to the floor, unable to rise. Silence followed as the sandstorm faded, leaving defeat clear without spectacle.

"Your Pokémon's power is real," Gus said seriously while recalling Gliscor, "but power without refinement won't win here. At least one move per Pokémon must reach B-rank mastery before you challenge this Gym again. Until then, you're not ready."

A quiet voice spoke from behind the observers. "But his instincts are promising."

Silas turned to see a tall man in a pristine white suit untouched by dust, teal hair falling neatly across calm, analytical eyes.

Authority clung to him despite the absence of any visible League symbol. "If I could recruit a talent like that," the man continued softly, "my next apprentice might rival Petrel's newest protégé—and that one is already approaching high rank."

The words sounded casual, yet their implication was not. Gus remained silent. The watchers pretended not to hear. After a moment, the man simply smiled faintly and walked away, footsteps soundless against stone. Silas watched him go, sensing something important had just brushed past his life without revealing its shape.

Evening painted Viridian in warm gold as he returned to the Pokémon Center. Streetlights flickered on, laughter drifted from restaurants, and the city moved peacefully beneath the glow. To any passerby, nothing was wrong.

Inside, the Center had settled into a quiet nighttime calm. Silwas walked up to the desk. Nurse Joy looked up gently. "You seem like you pushed yourself hard. How are your pokemon?"

Silas produced Monferno's pokeball and set it on the table.

"My Monferno took a lot of damage from a gym battle earlier today. Please take a look, Nurse Joy"

She accepted the pokeball without hesitation.

"No worries, you can pick him up in the morning. I assume you will need a place to rest, you can stay in one of the center's rooms."

Silas accepted the room key without protest and headed upstairs.

The room overlooked a calm street glowing beneath soft lamplight where trainers walked without fear and Pokémon rested beside them. Viridian appeared safe, functional, protected.

And yet Giovanni ruled from the shadows, strangers in white suits watched promising trainers, and some paths opened quietly while others disappeared just as quietly. Strength alone would not be enough to navigate this world.

Silas lay back on the bed, staring at the ceiling as exhaustion slowly pulled him toward sleep. Tomorrow would come soon, and Viridian would still be smiling.
