Chapter 8 - CHAPTER 8: FRAGMENTS OF THE PAST

The city blurred past, Mia's mind racing. Ethan drove, his eyes on the mirror. "We're almost there."

Mia's phone buzzed - a text from an unknown number. "They'll find you."

Her heart skipped. "It's them."

Ethan's jaw clched. "They're getting desperate."

They pulled into an underground garage, silence swallowing the car. Ethan led Mia to a nondescript door. "The Hideaway. We'll be secure here."

Inside, Lucas waited, a medkit open. "We need to talk about your past, Mia."

Mia's gut twisted. "What do you mean?"

Lucas's expression was gentle. "We found something. A chip. In your neck."

Mia's hand flew to her neck, a shiver running down her spine.

The garage swallowed them whole, the door slamming shut behind Ethan and Mia like a guillotine. The air was thick with tension, the only sound the soft hum of the car's engine cooling down.

Ethan's grip on her hand was like a lifeline, his eyes burning with a fierce intensity. "We're safe, Mia. For now."

Mia's heart was still racing, her mind reeling from the revelation. A chip. In her neck. What did it mean?

Lucas waited for them, his expression a mask of calm, but his eyes betraying a hint of unease. The medkit was open, a syringe waiting like a viper.

"Sit down, Mia," he said, his voice low and even.

Mia hesitated, her eyes locked onto the syringe. Ethan's hand on her shoulder was a gentle pressure. "It's okay, Mia. We'll figure this out."

She sat, the chair creaking beneath her. Lucas's fingers probed her neck, sending shivers down her spine.

"Ah," he said, his voice soft. "I see it. A small incision, probably done under anesthesia."

Mia's mind was spinning. "What does it do?"

Lucas's expression was grim. "We'll need to run some tests, but I think it's a tracking device. And possibly something more."

Ethan's voice was a growl. "They've been monitoring her. The whole time."

Mia's eyes locked onto Ethan's, a spark of anger igniting within her. "Who are they?"

Ethan's jaw was clenched. "We'll find out, Mia. I promise."

Lucas's voice cut through the tension. "We need to remove it. Now."

Mia's heart skipped a beat. "Remove it?"

Lucas nodded. "It's the only way to be sure you're safe."

The syringe hovered, a droplet of liquid glimmering at the tip. Mia's eyes locked onto Ethan's, her voice barely above a whisper. "Do it."

The needle bit into her skin, the world narrowing to a pinpoint of pain.

She winced, Ethan's grip on her hand tightening.

Lucas's voice was a distant murmur. "Almost there..."

The world narrowed to the pain, to Ethan's eyes locked onto hers. Then, it was over.

Mia exhaled, a rush of relief. Lucas held up a small chip, pinched between tweezers.

Ethan's voice was a growl. "Destroy it."

Lucas dropped the chip into a metal dish, a spark of flame incinerating it. Mia felt a weight lift, a sense of freedom she'd never known.

But Ethan's expression was grim. "It's not over, Mia. They're still out there."

A phone buzzed, Lucas's eyes narrowing at the screen. "We have a problem."

Mia's heart skipped. "What?"

Lucas's voice was low. "They just sent us a message. They know we're onto them."

Ethan's eyes locked onto Mia's, a silent understanding passing between them. It was time to take the fight to the enemy.

Ethan's eyes never left Mia's, the air thick with unspoken plans. Lucas's voice cut through the tension. "The message says they'll meet us at the old docks. Alone, Mia."

Mia's jaw set. "No way. We go in, all of us."

Ethan's grip on her hand tightened further. "It's a trap, Mia. We need a plan."

Lucas was already typing away. "I've got the layout of the docks. We can take them down, but we need to be careful."

Suddenly, Ethan's phone buzzed. A text, just three words: "Come alone, Mia."

Mia's eyes narrowed. "They're desperate. Let's do this."

Ethan's expression turned calculating. "They think they can control the game. Let's show them we play dirty."

Lucas nodded, eyes on the screens. "I've pinpointed their location. We have three exits, one main entrance. They'll be watching."

Mia's voice was cold. "We use that to our advantage."

Ethan's smile was deadly. "Time to turn the tables. Lucas, get the team ready. Mia, you're with me."

The air crackled with tension. It was go-time.

The team's movements were swift, practiced. Lucas tossed Ethan a gun, the metal gliding into his hand like an extension of himself.

Mia's eyes locked onto Ethan's. "What about the chip? What if it's a trick?"

Ethan's jaw was set. "We take that chance. We need to know what they did to you."

The air was thick with anticipation as they geared up. Lucas's voice was low. "Team's in position. Waiting for your signal, Ethan."

Ethan's eyes never left Mia's. "Let's do this."

They moved, shadows blending into the night, converging on the docks.

Ethan's voice was a low growl as they approached the docks, the rustling sound of water lapping against the piers filling the air. "Stay close, Mia. We're going in quiet."

Lucas's voice came through the comms device in Ethan's ear. "I've got eyes on the target. Three hostiles visible."

Mia's grip on Ethan's hand tightened as they moved through the shadows, the cold metal of a gun pressing against her palm. "What if they're not alone?" she whispered.

Ethan's eyes scanned the area, his gaze lingering on a figure standing at the edge of the dock. "We'll take them down. We've got backup."

The figure turned, and Mia's heart skipped a beat. It was a woman, with eyes that seemed to bore into Mia's soul.

The woman's gaze locked onto Mia's, and for a moment, everything froze. The docks, the shadows, the sound of the water – all of it faded into the background.

Mia's mind was a whirlwind of questions. Who was this woman? Why did she feel like she knew her?

Ethan's voice was a low whisper, breaking the spell. "Mia, you okay?"

Mia nodded, her throat dry. "Yeah. Who is she?"

The woman took a step forward, her eyes never leaving Mia's. "Hello, Mia."

The woman's voice was like a ghost from Mia's past, sending shivers down her spine. "I've been looking for you, Mia."

Ethan's hand tightened around Mia's, a silent warning. "Who are you?"

The woman's smile was sad, her eyes filled with a mix of pain and hope. "I'm your mother, Mia."

Mia's world spun. Her mother? She thought she didn't have a family. The words echoed in her mind like a scream.

Ethan's voice was a steady anchor. "Mia, you don't have to do this."

But Mia took a step forward, her voice barely above a whisper. "Why? Why did you leave me?"

The woman's eyes filled with tears, but her voice remained steady. "I had to protect you, Mia. From them. From Project Eclipse."

Mia's anger flared. "Protect me? You abandoned me."

Ethan's grip on her hand was a reminder he was there, but Mia's focus was on the woman – her mother – standing before her.

The woman took a shaky breath. "I didn't abandon you, Mia. I left you with people I trusted. I had to disappear, make them think you were dead."

Mia's anger was a living thing. "You don't get to explain now. Not after all these years."

The woman – her mother – nodded, tears streaming down her face. "I don't expect forgiveness. I just want you to know the truth."
