Chapter 25 - Chapter 25 : The Scourge

"All systems are operational. We should be ready to go in an hour."

Isaac said calmly, tapping a couple of times on the table in front of him.

David was behind him, leaned nonchalantly against a wall.

"Then I am leaving first to check on the little girl. A week has passed already, she should be done by now."

Saying those words, the blond man strode towards the door, but was interrupted by Isaac's stern voice.

"David, don't be too harsh on Eliza. She is still just a kid." He stood up and slowly turned to face his friend. "She may look mature, however I believe you're going too fast with her."

David silently stared, arms crossed, then answered with a long sigh. "And you're worrying too much. I'd say she's doing really well right now. A simple job such as killing a few dogs wouldn't be a problem."

Isaac pinched the bridge of his nose. "It wouldn't be a problem for you! Ugh. I just hope that I won't have to retrieve her cold body back to the base... Anyway, you can go now." He said shooing him away.

"Such a worrywart you are, Isaac. Just tell the girl you're in love with her and be done with it, haha!" He said jokingly with a grin before quickly running away, leaving Isaac in the room alone.

In front of Isaac, David acted like he was convinced that Eliza was doing all right and was confident that she wouldn't struggle against unforeseen circumstances. However he was, in fact, concerned too about his trainee's safety, and even quite worried that something bad could have happened, even if he had not yet received the distress signal.

That was why he was currently rushing extremely fast down the mountain, to the Shadow wolves' Canyon.

He had spent the whole week gathering consolidated energy for Isaac, to move the ship back to the base, meaning he had no time to oversee what Eliza was doing.

Additionally, he had a premonition, or rather a gut feeling, that there was extreme danger lying in wait there. And indeed, he could feel a strong pressure coming from the canyon, the closer he got to his destination, the stronger that feeling of oppression grew. Similar to a black fog, he could almost see the sinister aura of an incredibly strong demonic creature. A malicious blight that killed all that was near.

Thus he set foot in where the bane had spread.

The place was oddly quiet, without an ounce of motion. In this placid atmosphere, one man was rushed. Running place to place in a desperate search for someone.

Every second that passed, he grew more despondent...

A weak tremor shook the ground.

David stopped right on his tracks.

For the first time in a while, he felt real fear. The hair on his arms rose and cold sweat dripped slowly from his back.

He stood right in front of the epicenter of the storm, a living catastrophe.

A human figure with dark grey skin falling down as if melting. A horrendous and twisted smiling face with glazing indigo eyes. A deep black cloak covered its sinister figure entirely, absorbing all light around it. On its right hand, it held a long wooden staff, while its left hand was gripping an old fashioned clock that gave off a vicious and ominous aura.

The intense feeling of incongruity that emanated from this entity inspired dread and despair to all living beings.

This was not a simple unique monster, but the remnant of a past divinity. One that shouldn't have set foot on this land.

David's complexion slightly paled, yet he remained steady and was ready to fight.

He had many questions on how and who could have brought back a forgotten god without thinking of the consequences, but he could answer none.

Unfortunately, there was no other way but to kill or to be killed in this kind of situation. He did not know if Eliza was still alive, however even then, he could not let this kind of monster freely roam around the world.

Thus ignoring his fear, he readied his fists and took on a fighting stance.

He did not make the first move. Instead, he patiently waited for his opponent to take action.

And soon, it did. Slowly, it raised its wooden staff. Slowly, it straightened its back. It then closed its eyes, And suddenly...

It slammed the staff to the ground.

There was no sound. The wind had gone silent and the world was interrupted, in a complete standstill.

David felt his consciousness being swayed, taken away by an immensely strong current... but he hold on, and moved. He took this opportunity that was offered to him, when the monster had let its guard down.

A rapid dash, breaking the sound barrier; he tore through the invisible veil created from the monster's domain, and thrust his arm forward at an incredible speed.

The world had continued to flow as the collision occurred. David's fist was met with a strong repelling force, and he was aggressively thrown back to where he was.

He was not injured, however his mind was strongly shaken from that forceful attack he had made. This humongous amount of spiritual force the monster had, was currently its most dangerous aspect for David. That kind of foe would be his nemesis since his power came purely from physical strength and was not mind-related at all. It was a bad match for him.

A low tick suddenly resounded inside the canyon, then time gradually slowed down, almost stopping entirely; the world was painted in a dull grey, losing all colors, all sound.

Whereas the monster could move normally, the human's movement were slowed, as if he was moving inside water. However even then, his haste was incomparable to any other among his peers, and his incredible dexterity remained.

In this static world, two aberrations of nature began an arduous battle. They exchanged countless strikes; the ground broke from their aftershocks, scattering debris that then froze in midair.

At first glance, David's high speed punches seemed to be overwhelming his opponent, but in reality, the monster's perfect defense efficiently countered his offensive. Not a single fist David threw, passed through its invisible shielding wall.

Then the monster suddenly swung horizontally its wooden staff with a rapid motion, effortlessly breaking David's stance who was pushed a few steps back.

However he quickly regained his bearings, and kicked the stationary rocks in the air to use as a projectile against the opponent. In response, the monster simply made a swatting motion with its hand, and the incoming attack was deviated, crashing on the ground.

This game of back and forth had perdured for a long while, and soon, their surroundings were filled with the shattered and pulverized stones that were once part of the floor and walls.

And in the middle of this chaos, a man and a creature stood face to face, unmoving.

A low tick was heard, and the world regained its colors. The flow of time was no longer held back and all the debris had loudly fallen to the ground.

Then there was a second cacophony. Thousands of footsteps, hundreds of monsters. They came unannounced, surrounding the two opponents. Giant black wolves showing their teeth aggressively, growling and roaring.

Amidst this happening, the monster had lifted itself into the sky, and as soon as it had landed on a nearby cliff, the waiting wolves all charged at once towards the sole man, as he got ready to take them on.

[A/N]

At the time I wrote this, I was quite excited as it would be the first fight between exceptional beings. Though I'm not very good at making fights entertaining so I hope you could forgive me for this… I am still striving for improvement!

Anyway, in hopes you enjoy reading.
