Chapter 1 - CHAPTER 1

Orivelle had always known she didn't quite belong among the ordinary. She could talk, laugh, and be picky like everybody else, but there was an underlying awareness that set her apart - a feeling of being connected to something beyond the mundane. Even as a child she could sense the strange currents that threaded through the world, invisible to everyone else

Yet she had never imagined she might be anything magical.

The morning seemed normal enough - the breeze - carrying with it the smell of baked bread and the faint hum of city life, It buzzed as usual with sounds of trains and morning businesses.

Orivelle was expecting a normal day in the city of Everwood, and even though she felt different, she didn't make it a big deal.

She thought she was just another weird nerd - until animals began to speak back at her. Sometimes she felt a dark hunger, a craving to sink her teeth into the neck of a fat bully at school, and a wild longing to roam freely under a fool moon in the middle of nowhere.

Something wasn't right and she could feel it all before anyone even said a word. It was just the beginning of her story.

It started small and unnoticeable, birds froze during traffic just as she glanced at it when she was angrily. One time when she was 8 years old she screamed out in pain during an injury and the glasses around her shattered as if they were scared. Or the mysterious injuries that always healed on their own.

At school, it became even harder to ignore. During lunch - some group of older students approached Orivelle and knocked her tray to the ground - her food spilled over the floor.

She wanted to retreat quietly, to escape without incident, but before she could move they doubled her over. She found herself on the floor covered with the same food. She scrambled to her feet, the hot food stinging her cheeks. Whispers and giggles surrounded her, and before she knew it, the students were doubled over, clutching themselves in sudden discomfort. Orivelle couldn't help but laugh, shocked at what just happened although she couldn't understand why this had happened yet a small part of her felt a strange, unexplainable satisfaction.

After class for the day, was called to the head mistress's office and was questioned on what happened back at the cafeteria, innocently she denied any knowledge, because she doesn't have any idea of what or who

she was but who would believe such. With her teary, pitiful face she sat quietly unable to defend herself as she was suspended from school for a week - something that's never happened before. Sadly she walked home with her aunt Phoebe, who didn't even question her, which only left Orivelle more suspicious why her aunt has always acted like she never noticed what was happening around her.

Reminiscing about everything that's been happening to her lately, Orivelle began to ask questions, questions that aunt Phoebe had no answer to, angrily Orivelle storms into her room crying, and asks the one question: "Am I cursed?, why am I different from other kids, why do I know answers to things that I have no idea about?"

With tears heavy in her heart and the thoughts of how her future might be,she falls asleep.

A sleep cut short by a distant howl from afar that seemed to pierce through her very soul, Orivelle froze "what is that sound?" she whispered.
